MUSEUMS WITH HOLDINGS OF TOBACCO-RELATED ARTIFACTS Compiled by Ben Rapaport (Winter, 2018-2019) The following is a list of museums (and other places) around the globe having a few ... or many tobacco-related relics, artifacts, and antiques. I do not guarantee that (1) the museum is still open to the public or (2) items once cited as "tobacco" are still current holdings. Where specific information has been provided to me by the museum's curator or by visitors, I have noted the holdings. For German museums, I have used Billerbeck, Mit Rauchern lässt sich redden (1993) ​ ​ and Franz Wandinger, “Rauchzeichen in Deutschen Museen,” Teil 1 (Knasterkopf, Heft 14, 2001 ​ ​ and Teil 2, Band 15, 2002). Both sources identify and describe German museums that have any segment of tobacco or tobacco-related artifacts. In some instances, the museum address is not complete, so if you have corrections (or additions), I would appreciate your input. I hope this list proves useful in your global travels or at-home research. Bear in mind that, occasionally, museums open and close without much public fanfare, and others relocate quite often, so this edition may not be wholly up-to-date. Check the Web or contact the museum before you plan a visit and to determine whether the artifacts you desire to see are on permanent display or in storage, and if you require a special appointment.     Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 How the Act Affects: Tobacconists The Basics The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 prohibits the smoking of tobacco, the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to vape any substance, and the smoking of cannabis (medical and recreational) in enclosed workplaces and enclosed public places, as well as other designated places in Ontario, to protect workers and the public from second- hand smoke and vapour. Smoking refers to the smoking or holding of lighted tobacco or cannabis (medical or recreational). Vaping refers to inhaling or exhaling vapour from an electronic cigarette or holding an activated electronic cigarette, whether or not the vapour contains nicotine. Tobacconists A tobacconist is a business registered with the local Board of Health that primarily sells specialty tobacco products. This includes tobacco products and accessories (e.g., cigars, pipes, humidors), but does not include cigarettes. Sales and Inventory A retailer can register as a tobacconist with the local Board of Health if specialty tobacco products account for at least 85 per cent of its total sales in the previous year. If the retailer has been in operation for less than a year, at least 85 per cent of the retailer’s total inventory purchases or sales during that time period must relate to specialty tobacco products. The remaining up to 15 per cent of the store’s revenues or inventory would have to be from cigarettes or other items reasonably associated with a tobacco product or branded with the name of the tobacconist or a brand of tobacco. Exemption for Tobacconists Display A registered tobacconist is permitted to display and promote specialty tobacco products, including heat-not-burn products, if the following conditions are met: 1 1.

    Other Tobacco Products (OTP) Are Products Including Smokeless and “Non-Cigarette” Materials

    Other tobacco products (OTP) are products including smokeless and “non-cigarette” materials. For more information on smoking and how to quit using tobacco products, check out our page on tobacco. A tobacco user may actually absorb more nicotine from chewing tobacco or snuff than they do from a cigarette (Mayo Clinic). The health consequences of smokeless tobacco use include oral, throat and pancreatic cancer, tooth loss, gum disease and increased risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. (American Cancer Society, “Smokeless Tobacco” 2010) Smokeless tobacco products contain at least 28 cancer-causing agents. The risk of certain types of cancer increases with smokeless tobacco: Esophageal cancer, oral cancer (cancer of the mouth, throat, cheek, gums, lips, tongue). Other Tobacco Products (OTP) Include: Chewing/Spit Tobacco A smokeless tobacco product consumed by placing a portion of the tobacco between the cheek and gum or upper lip teeth and chewing. Must be manually crushed with the teeth to release flavor and nicotine. Spitting is required to get rid of the unwanted juices. Loose Tobacco Loose (pipe) tobacco is made of cured and dried leaves; often a mix of various types of leaves (including spiced leaves), with sweeteners and flavorings added to create an "aromatic" flavor. The tobacco used resembles cigarette tobacco, but is more moist and cut more coarsely. Pipe smoke is usually held in the mouth and then exhaled without inhaling into the lungs. Blunt Wraps Blunt wraps are hollowed out tobacco leaf to be filled by the consumer with tobacco (or other drugs) and comes in different flavors. Flavors are added to create aromas and flavors.

Founded as an Augustinian Canons’ Monastery in 1229, the whole complex underwent extensive structural changes in the 17th century. In 1840 Archduke Johann acquired the Stainz demesne. He established here a model farm and had fruit and vineyards planted around the castle. Today, Schloss Stainz is owned by his descendants, the Meran family. Hunting Museum Schloss Stainz Hunting culture through the ages For millennia, hunting has been an integral part of human life. Starting in September 2006, the new museum of hunting at Stainz Castle will be showcasing hunting culture in all its facets, not only presenting an extensive synopsis in terms of cultural history but also focusing on the interaction of man and nature. Hunting Museum: Innovative presentation in historical walls In several stages of construction an exhibition area of 1200m² was created, new depots built, the box-office and shop areas redesigned, and the administration area revitalised at Stainz Castle, that was built in 1695 and acquired by Archduke John in 1840. The innovative presentation not only fits in consummately with the historical setting of Stainz Castle, it also spotlights the long standing tradition of hunting in Styria, particularly the founder of the Joanneum, Archduke John, who was known as a passionate hunter and whose heirs now run Stainz Castle as a modern enterprise.

They are present in fresh and dried (cured) tobacco leaves as well. The sugar content of tobacco depends on the tobacco variety, harvesting, and primarily on the curing conditions (temperature, time and moisture). If the process of curing employs high temperatures (flue-curing and sun-curing), final sugar content is high. In contrast, when air curing has a lower temperature, at the end of the process, sugar level is low. Beside simple sugars, other carbohydrates reported in tobacco are oligosaccharides, cellulose, starch, and pectin. Degradation of polysaccharides results in a higher yield of simple sugars, but at the same time reduces sugars oxidization and transfer into carbon dioxide and water. Loss of sugar producers will compensate with added sugars, to cover undesirable aroma properties and achieve a better, pleasant taste during smoking.
