X PRIZE FOUNDATION & NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY PRESENT The First International Symposium for Personal Spaceflight (ISIP - 2005) PRESENTING SPONSOR Arianespace Inc. (USA) Opening Personal Spaceflight For the past forty years the general public has watched in a combination of awe and excitement at the marvelous engineering achievements of the government space programs as the astronauts and cosmonauts showed the feasibility of living and working in space and brought back inspirational stories of the wonders of “space-travel”. For forty years the general public has been frustrated that they too could not go. The winning of the Ansari X PRIZE in October 2004 by a privately financed and privately developed spaceship, flying out of a civilian spaceport has changed that perception. The era of Personal Spaceflight has been opened. Our Symposium will lead you through the multi-faceted dimensions of Personal Spaceflight ranging from the technical developments necessary to achieve safe routine flight to and from and through space, to the new personal business opportunities and economic benefits that will open in space and here on Earth. We will explore the personal excitement and thrills that await the space traveler. Our Symposium will delve into the technical, regulatory, market and financial needs and challenges that must be met in charting and executing the incremental developments leading to Personal Spaceflight and the opening of a Place Called Space. This inaugural International Symposium for Personal Spaceflight (ISPS) is being held in conjunction with the Countdown to X PRIZE CUP and will have four Tracks. The Tracks will feature guest speakers and expert panels that will provide insights to both the possibilities of Personal Spaceflight and the developments underway to enable and support Personal Spaceflight. We look forward to your participation this year and in succeeding years as together we help build the bridge to your personal future in space. William A. Gaubatz, PhD Patricia C. An Dumitru Popescu, President, Aeronautics & Cosmonautics Romanian enormous public interest exists for space adventures as evidenced by the Assoc. (ARCA) annual attendance of over 12,000,000 people at space museums, space Patrick Bahn, President, TGV camps and parks and by international surveys that show a10-billion-dollar annual revenue potential for space rides, were they available. The trip to the Winning of the Ansari X PRIZE by the SpaceShipOne Team provided proof, International Space Station by Dennis Tito in April 2001 formally opened the through multiple flights, that the technology is available in the private sector era of Space Tourism and further heightened the desire for space travel by the to support evolutionary development of safe, affordable spaceships, enabling general public. The flights of SpaceshipOne in June through October 2004 routine flights to and from and through space by the general public. Such dramatically reinforced the reality of the potential for Personal Spaceflight. developments are underway by privately financed teams around the world This Track will address exciting opportunities that await the Off World and government agencies are continuing to fill the designer’s shelves with Traveler, whether experiencing sub-orbital flights, low earth orbit, exploring new technology. These are incremental steps, starting with suborbital flights the lunar surface, or visiting five star spas in space. from single spaceports, progressing to suborbital flights between nearby spaceports and finally to orbital flights and flights between spaceports pairs located halfway around the world. The success of these new space businesses will be dependent on the abilities of the Personal Spaceflight Industry to use existing technology to achieve safe, maintainable, cost effective vehicles. The continued competitiveness of the industry will be dependent on the continued improvements and development of new technologies that will lead to increased safety and lower costs. This Track will explore current and planned activities by industry and in government laboratories supporting new Personal Spaceflight vehicles and technology advances. 10:45 BREAK — Exhibition Area - Dona Ana Room 12:15 ISPS Luncheon – Corbett Center Ballroom INTRODUCTIONS AND RECOGNITION OF KEY PERSONNEL AND ORGANIZATIONS Peter Diamandis, CEO and Founder X PRIZE Foundation Symposium Key Note Address Topic: New Mexico — Steward of Personal Space Flight Development Distinguished Speaker Rick Homans, Cabinet Secretary, New Mexico Economic Development Department With the winning of the opportunity to host the annual X PRIZE CUP & Personal Spaceflight Exposition the State of New Mexico made the commitment to actively engage in the development of the new Personal Spaceflight Industry with the goal opening space to all people. The uniqueness of Space as a Place is that it is equally close to everyone. A key element of opening space to all people is the network of spaceports that must be developed and operated to service people around the nation and the world. Leading the development of these portals to space with safe, convenient and cost effective operations and sharing these learning experiences is the awesome responsibility that the State of New Mexico and its Department of Economic Development has taken on in its stewardship role for the new space community. This Symposium is dedicated to fostering the sharing of experiences in all elements of the Personal Spaceflight Industry and personally involving the participation of general public, without whom, the bountiful resources of space will never be realized for the benefit of all mankind. 3:15 TRACK 4 — Spaceports: Infrastructure for the New Space Economy 1:30 TRACK 3 — Space As A Place Co-Chair: Sonya Cooper, New Mexico State University Chair: Kevin Boberg, New Mexico State University Co-Chair: Bill Gutman, New Mexico State University, Physical Sciences Lab Topics: Space As a New Economic Sector Topics: Supporting the New Personal Spaceflight Industry Designing for Safe and Low Cost Operations Space Markets Facilities for Training, Education, Outreach and Entertainment Terrestrial Markets Infrastructure, Site and Design Considerations Financing issues Space Resource Development Panelists: Panelists: Lonnie Sumpter, President, Kinematics Tim Pickens, President, Orion Propulsion Inc.
