Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. Perennial herb, with storage taproot, rosetted, several-stemmed at base, with ascending to spreading branches, in range to 50 cm tall; shoots with to 5 basal leaves and < 5 cauline leaves, sparsely hairy mostly with unbranched hairs to 2 mm long; taproot of large plant sometimes 15+ mm diameter. Stems: initially inconspicuously low-ridged aging cylindric, to 4 mm diameter, ridges descending from stipules, tough, green tissue and often glaucous (appearing grayish green), upper portion often glabrous and lower portion with widely spaced pilose or approaching inflorescence pilose and with short stellate hairs having appressed arms (to 4-armed). Leaves: helically alternate, deeply palmately lobed with 5 or 7 (3) principal lobes, long- petiolate (most leaves) to subsessile or sessile (the uppermost cauline leaf and bracts), with stipules; stipules 2, attached diagonally at node beneath petiole, suberect later relaxed, asymmetric to symmetric ovate, 5.5−9 × 2.3−7 mm, often unequal in pairs, green and glaucous, large side with basal lobe and often having a shoulder below midpoint, ciliate on margins with unbranched hairs, acute at tip, with 7+ veins at base, ± persistent; petiole channeled, to 120 mm long (basal leaves) decreasing upward, on lower plant petiole > blade, tough, glabrous or with pilose hairs on edges; blade mostly roundish in outline with radiating principal lobes, in range 22−60 mm, appearing cordate at base, lobes somewhat fan-shaped with sublobes to 10 mostly arising at midpoint, most leaves with lobes and sublobes linear, slender, and channeled, sublobes on lower basal leaf oblong if long and obtuse at tip, terminal lobe to 35 × 25 mm, adjacent lobes similar but not as wide, short- ciliate to pilose-ciliate on margins, palmately veined at base with principal vein to each lobe raised on lower surface, surfaces glabrous or with scattered, short stellate hairs having appressed arms. -

Molecular phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal ITS sequence data resolve a group of northern species of Andeimalva found in Bolivia and Peru from the morphologically very different south- ern A. chilensis. The new species bears the largest flowers of anyAndeimalva and is compared with Bolivian A. mandonii. A revised key to the genus is presented. ® International Journal of Plant Developmental Biology ©2010 Global Science Books Review and Advances in Style Curvature for the Malvaceae Cheng-Jiang Ruan* Key Laboratory of Biotechnology & Bio-Resources Utilization, Dalian Nationalities University, Dalian City, Liaoning 116600, China Correspondence : * [email protected] ABSTRACT The flowers of the Malvaceae with varying levels of herkogamy via style curvature have long intrigued evolutionary botanists. This review covers the flower opening process, approach herkogamy, style curvature and character evolution based on molecular phylogenetic trees, adaptive significances of style curvature and the mating system in some portions of the genera in this family. Hermaphroditic flowers of some species have showy petals and pollen and nectar rewards to pollinators. Approach herkogamy, in which stigmas are located on the top of a monadelphous stamen, has evolved as a mechanism to reduce the frequency of intra-floral self-pollination or the interference between male-female organs. Protandrous or monochogamous flowers in the fields open at about 5-7 days and 1-2 days respectively, and pollination is conducted by insects and birds. Interestingly, un-pollinated styles in some species curve when pollination fails. According to our observations and published or internet data, this curvature occurs in 23 species distributed in eight genera of four tribes (Malvavisceae, Ureneae, Hibisceae, Malveae) and appears to have evolved at least eight times. A shift to use style curvature is associated with a shift to annual or perennial herbs, and an unpredictable pollinator environment is likely an important trigger for this evolution. The adaptive significances of style curvature in the Malvaceae include delayed selfing, promotion of outcrossing or reduction in intrafloral male-female interference, sometimes two or three of which simultaneously occur in style curvature of one species (e.g., Kosteletzkya virginica). -

PATRICIA SILVA SÁENZ Presentación El presente manual intenta ser una referencia didáctica de las muchas que se deben tener a la mano a la hora de iniciar un trabajo botánico, florístico sistemático y/o taxonómico referente en este caso- a las Plantas con Flores, Angiospermas, Antophytas o Magnoliophytas. Dicho grupo de organismos aparece en el registro fósil desde hace aproximadamente 130 millones de años (Judd 2002) y es en la actualidad el más diversificado de los grupos vegetales. Es el que más ha colonizado distintos hábitats terrestres, el que presenta más formas de vida, formas de crecimiento, tallas, estrategias reproductivas, colores, mecanismos de polinización, de fotosíntesis (CAM, C3, C4) de nutrición hetero y micotrófica, de dispersión de semilla y de propagación etc. Es por tanto el grupo con mayor diferenciación de sus partes morfológicas vegetativas, y sobre todo, las reproductivas. Pero también es el grupo vegetal del que más dependemos los seres humanos para satisfacer diversas necesidades, sobre todo alimenticias, aunque también destacan desde las constructivas hasta las espirituales. Juegan un papel fundamental en el mantenimiento y regulación de las condiciones de los ecosistemas y la biósfera por su participación en muchos de los ciclos biogeoquímicos, regulando la cantidad y la calidad del agua, diversos gases y partículas suspendidas en la atmósfera y contenidas en el suelo. -

Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion.
