If we start viewing ourselves as a part of the divine self, our entire perspective of looking at life will change. Amongst all the creations of the universal spirit, it is man alone who has been blessed with the magnificent known and unknown profundity of hidden artistry and innovative strengths to discover the unknown realities of life. Since evolution, human beings have continually realized their competencies, which in turn have globalized the whole of mankind. Now they have extended their powers so much so that they are at the verge of dwelling on other planets. Yes, we can undoubtedly say that this results from the contribution of science. Nevertheless, it is the man who explored science itself that is ultimately responsible for its advances. It is an undeniable fact that man with his indefinable spiritual entity can obtain the revelation of the universal spirit as well. In today’s globalized era, advanced scientific technologies have almost touched every aspect of human life and the corporate world. Scientific research has spread its web in all directions and caught human life at every end. These inventions have enticed mankind at each step with an abundance of electronic gadgets, appliances, automated machineries and unbelievable bio-technologies that claim to be able to clone human life. As a result of these scientific innovations, people are undoubtedly enjoying their comfort and performing multiple tasks in less time with little or no physical and mental effort. But at the same time, due to this fast paced life, man has overloaded his mind, body and soul beyond his psychosomatic efficiency. We are stepping forward here by accepting the fact that with proper use and care, life grows. However, lack of use and negligence leads it to lose its valuable grace and becomes rustic. Unfortunately, this is what plagues human beings today. Man is living a life according to a predetermined, programmed pattern, like a robot, without any personal space for self- realization and consciousness. His life has become so hypersensitive that it is like a water bubble which seems colorful and very beautiful superficially but which with a little prick bursts in no time and becomes inexistent. Such delicate personality of a man is the most dangerous state of his being, and it constantly affects his health in the form of hypertension, hypoxia, anxiety, fear, depression and other critical ailments. Man has been using his own power to such an extent that his personal, family and social life is degrading. All such problems can be avoided by fostering the awareness and by diving deep into the infinite depth of the mind through meditation and by regulating the psychosomatic processes of the body and mind through the yogic practices, which will restore the holistic health for a harmonious and quality existence. Yoga is an art and science that heals each loophole, internally and externally, and refines the human soul comprehensively by working on the human body and mind. It is the natural medicine that forms a protective aura around man. Yoga can be effectively utilized to unite man’s scattered life and bring it in harmony with the self, the society, nature and the universe. The word ‘yoga’ literally means to join broken man individually at first, and universally in the end to seek an eternal bliss. The prime purpose of this book is to provide a source of information to help man to groom and achieve the integration of his personality, and ultimately to form a healthy, ethical and coherent society. This book also aims to enlighten the students of yoga engaged in various courses as a source of literature and help them with the knowledge they seek for their academic success. Though each chapter of this book has its own objectives, they are all complimentary to one another. My yoga practice began in Louisiana (when no one did yoga there!) at about the age of 15. At the local library, I happened to pick up The Sivananda Companion to Yoga and started trying out some of the poses and breathing. Actually, I skipped the breathing and avoided it for many years until I did my Pilates training and was forced to learn to breathe! Now I am devoted to my Ashtanga/Vinyasa Yoga practice and my Pilates work to keep my body in shape and to add a spiritual component to my life. It has been very interesting to compare a movement practice that has been around for 2000 years with one that has been around for only about 80 years.     Detoxification in Hatha Yoga and Ayurveda By Mas Vidal Introduction The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (HYP) is a unique text of the Nath yogis that enumerates some interesting methods for purifying the body. Swami Svatmarama, the chief disciple of Swami Goraknath authored it during the medieval period. Evidently, Matsyendranath, founder of the Nath (synonym for Shiva) cult along with Goraknath understood clearly the importance of mind- body purification as requisites for spiritual evolution and thus created a six-fold system (shat- karma) of detoxification. This popular yoga text is composed of four chapters. In brief, the first chapter deals with postural yoga (asana); chapter two deals with the six actions of purification (shatkarma and pranayama); chapter three describes the physical gestures and energy locks (mudras and bandhas), and chapter four discusses spiritual liberation (samadhi). The placement of the shat-karmas (purification practices) in the second chapter prior to the last chapter on samadhi (liberation) indicates the importance of having a clean bodily house to attain spiritual freedom. This article highlights the correlation the detoxifying actions described in chapter two of the HYP with those mentioned in the main Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita. Interestingly, the HYP methods have much in common with those used in Ayurveda, yoga’s sister science of self-healing. Similarly, Ayurvedic mastermind Charaka, devised a five-fold system (pancha karma) for purification of the doshas (vata, pitta & kapha) to improve the mind-body relationship. The concept of detoxification, which boldly appears in both yoga and ayurvedic systems, demonstrates a long history of inter-connectedness between the two sciences.

Dimitrios Liokaftos Signed, 2 Abstract Through a combination of historical and empirical research, the present thesis explores the development of dominant, organized bodybuilding culture across three periods: early (1880s-1930s), middle (1940s-1970s), and late (1980s-present). This periodization reflects the different paradigms in bodybuilding that the research identifies and examines at the level of body aesthetic, model of embodied practice, aesthetic of representation, formal spectacle, and prevalent meanings regarding the 'nature' of bodybuilding. Employing organized bodybuilding displays as the axis for the discussion, the project traces the gradual shift from an early bodybuilding model, represented in the ideal of the 'classical,' 'perfect' body, to a late-modern model celebrating the 'freaky,' 'monstrous' body. This development is shown to have entailed changes in notions of the 'good' body, moving from a 'restorative' model of 'all-around' development, health, and moderation whose horizon was a return to an unsurpassable standard of 'normality,' to a technologically-enhanced, performance- driven one where 'perfection' assumes the form of an open-ended project towards the 'impossible.' Central in this process is a shift in male identities, as the appearance of the body turns not only into a legitimate priority for bodybuilding practitioners but also into an instance of sport performance in bodybuilding competition. Equally central, and related to the above, is a shift from a model of amateur competition and non-instrumental practice to one of professional competition and extreme measures in search of the winning edge.

    1 Tantra and Hatha Yoga. A little history and some introductory thoughts: These areas of practice in yoga are really all part of the same, with Tantra being the historical development in practice that later spawned hatha yoga. Practices originating in these traditions form much of what we practice in the modern day yoga. Many terms, ideas and theories that we use come from this body of knowledge though we may not always fully realise it or understand or appreciate their original context and intent. There are a huge number of practices described that may or may not seem relevant to our current practice and interests. These practices are ultimately designed for complete transformation and liberation, but along the way there are many practices designed to be of therapeutic value to humans on many levels and without which the potential for transformation cannot happen. Historically, Tantra started to emerge around the 6th to 8th Centuries A.D. partly as a response to unrealistic austerities in yoga practice that some practitioners were espousing in relation to lifestyle, food, sex and normal householder life in general. Tantra is essentially a re-embracing of all aspects of life as being part of a yogic path; the argument being that if indeed all of life manifests from an underlying source and is therefore all interconnected then all of life is inherently spiritual or worthy of our attention. And indeed, if we do not attend to all aspects of life in our practice this can lead to problems and imbalances. This embracing of all of life includes looking at our shadows and dark sides and integrating or transforming them, ideas which also seem to be embraced in modern psychology.

When we carry ourselves with the head thrust forward, we create neck pain, shoul- der tension, even disc herniation and lower back problems. A reliable cue to re- mind ourselves how to shift the head back into a more stress-free position would do wonders for resolving these problems, but first we have to know what we’re up against. When it comes to keeping our head in the right place, posturally speaking, the neck is at something of a disadvantage. There are a number of forces at work that can easily pull the neck into misalignment, but only a few forces that maintain the delicate alignment of the head on the spine, allowing all the supporting muscles to work in harmony.
