STRAUSS CLAY, JENNY, What the Muses Sang: "Theogony" 1-115 , Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies, 29:4 (1988:Winter) p.323 What the Muses Sang: Theogony 1-115 Jenny Strauss Clay HE PROEM to the Theogony has often been analyzed both in T terms of its formal structure and in relation to recurrent hym nic conventions;l it has also been interpreted as a fundamental statement of archaic Greek poetics.2 While differing somewhat in its perspective, the present investigation builds on and complements those previous studies. Dedicated to the Muses, the patronesses of poetry, the opening of the Theogony repeatedly describes these divini ties engaged in their characteristic activity, that is, singing. In the course of the proem, the Muses sing four times: once as they descend from Helicon (lines 11-21), twice on Olympus (44-50, 66f), and once as they make their way from their birthplace in Pieria and ascend to Olympus (71-75). In addition, the prologue describes the song the goddesses inspire in their servants, the aoidoi (99-101), as well as the song Hesiod requests that they sing for him, the invocation proper (105-15). My aim here is a simple one: to examine the texts and contexts of each of these songs and to compare them to the song the Muses instruct Hesiod to sing and the one he finally produces. Hesiod – Works and Days
Hesiod – Works and days Hesiod was an early Greek poet who flourished around 700 BCE. His two works: “Theogony” and “Works and Days” are the sources of a great deal of what we know of early Greek religion. The following is a brief excerpt from the poem. THE PROMETHEUS‐PANDORA STORY For the gods keep hidden the livelihood of men. Otherwise you might easily do enough work in a day to have enough for a full year with no further need to be working, and might immediately hang up your rudder in the smoke of your fireplace and release your oxen and hardworking mules from their labor. But Zeus hid our livelihood when he was angered at heart because Prometheus, the clever deviser, tried to deceive him. This is why he devised anguishing miseries for men. And he hid fire, which the goodly son of Iapetos stole back, taking it from Zeus of the Counsels to give it to men, secretly carrying it in a fennel stalk's hollow from Zeus of the Firebolt. Then, stirred to anger, Zeus of the Storm Cloud addressed him as follows: "Son of Iapetos, you who surpass all others in planning, you rejoice in your theft of my fire and in having deceived me, being the cause of great pain to yourself and men in the future. I shall give them in payment of fire an evil which all shall take to their hearts with delight, an evil to love and embrace.” Thus the Father of God; and of Men addressed him, and laughed. -

DOI 10.1515/jah-2013-0002 JAH 2013; 1(1): 3–26 Teresa Morgan Divine-Human Relations in the Aesopic Corpus Abstract: This paper argues that Aesopic fables are an under-used but valuable resource for the study of Graeco-Roman cognitive religiosity. The world of fables is ruled by a restricted group of divinities – an ‘oligotheon’–dominated by Zeus, the largely benign creator who gives living beings their characteristic qualities and regulates their behaviour. Divine-human relations typically take place infor- mally and/or in private, rather than in public and/or through cult acts. Fables present the gods as spontaneously interested in human beings and as having a tendency to interfere uninvited in their affairs; one can sometimes even detect development in a divine-human relationship in the course of a story. A few fables play with the tensions endemic in divine-human relations, such as the unequal value of what each party brings to the other, and the paradox of human stories’ power to capture in narrative what in principle is beyond the bounds of human control. Carefully handled, fables can be taken seriously as evidence of one, sometimes unexpectedly sophisticated strain in Graeco-Roman religious think- ing, which persisted over a long period of time and across a wide spectrum of society.
