The new power line authorised to improve reliability, efficiency and quality of the electricity system

TERNA: € 170 MILLION FOR THE NEW “COLUNGA- ” POWER LINE BETWEEN - AND

The work, which runs between the Provinces of and , is one of the most important projects for the development of the Italian electricity grid outlined in the 2021-2025 Business Plan

84 km of new lines, plus 16 km of underground cables and around 106 km of old overhead power lines demolished with more than 200 hectares of land freed

Rome, 9 December 2020 – The decree has been signed, authorising the new 380 kV power line which will join the Colunga () and Calenzano () areas. This line will ensure a notable increase in the exchange capacity between North and Centre-North, strengthening the mesh of the electricity grid. This is a strategic action to resolve the critical issues in the supply of electricity between Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany which connects the centre of the country, for which Terna will now proceed with the final design and with all the activities in preparation for the opening of the construction sites by the end of 2021.

With an investment of approximately € 170 million, the new connection, which is one of the Terna’s main projects planned in the next 5 years for the development of the national electricity grid, will help to resolve the grid congestions in one of the critical areas of the Italian electricity system guaranteeing greater efficiency and sustainability of the regional electrical infrastructure.

The project, which will involve 12 municipalities, 9 in the province of Bologna (, San Lazzaro, Ozzano, , , , San Benedetto Val di Sambro, and ) and 3 in the province of Florence (, Barberino del Mugello and Calenzano) provides for the creation of a new line 84 km long, 39 in Emilia-Romagna and 45 in Tuscany, between the Colunga and Calenzano electrical substations, replacing the current 220 kV power line built more than 60 years ago.

Approximately 106 km of overhead power lines will be demolished, 68 in Emilia-Romagna and 38 in Tuscany, which will make it possible to free up a total of more than 200 hectares of land. With more than 16 km of new underground lines, as well as an improvement in the security and resilience of the electricity system, it will generate important environmental benefits for the local communities.

The creation of the new “Colunga-Calenzano”, in line with Terna’s strategy, which gives

sustainability a central and essential role in all its activities, will follow the existing route for 50% in order not to involve new territories and provide for variants, agreed upon with the municipalities involved, where there are buildings and built-up areas developed after the construction of the existing line at the end of the 1950s. In addition, Terna will assess the possibility of optimising the integration of the new line into the surrounding environment through a study of the tones of the territory on the supports located in the areas of greatest landscape value.
