From these, the castle passed to the captain of Manfredi, King of Naples, to the distinguished Canigiani family and which was also the birthplace of Petrarch, to the Capponi Counts, the last heirs who sold it in 1988 to the current owners who with passionate work restored the luxury home to its ancient beauty. From the Castle, which is spread over five floors culminating in a striking watch tower over a total of 1400m2, we continue towards the big farmhouse next to the castle, which has been transformed into six apartments covering a total of 840m2 and that despite the introduction of modern comfort has maintained the charm of the ancient properties in Italy. In the barn, which covers 165m2, a large garage and a heated indoor pool have been built which in summer is linked to the outdoor pool. A second barn, a farmhouse, a church rectory with its own Lionard S.p.A. The farm now extends over 62 hectares, of which 14 are planted with olive trees and 11 are vineyards, and produces Chianti wine of the Colli Fiorentini awarded "Titolato" and extra virgin olive oil from "select" olives. Then, a delicate and fragrant grappa is extracted from the fresh pomace of the wines. The location offeredy by this castle for sale in Italy is also ideal for visiting Tuscany: it is close to Florence and Siena, near San Gimignano, Volterra and Pisa, not far from the beaches of Versilia, well linked to roads and motorways but at the same time set in an area away from any traffic, quiet and panoramic, with the option of walks in the woods of the castle and horse riding trips nearby. TECHNICAL DETAILS LOCATION Certaldo is a municipality at the heart of Valdelsa in the province of Florence, among the rolling hills covered with vineyards, olive groves and rows of cypresses. This site was the home of Giovanni Boccaccio, consisting of several buildings of great historic and artistic interest. Certaldo is touched by the waters of the river Elsa and by the Agliena stream where it ends. The town centre extends to the sides of a main road, forming two very different hubs, consisting of a medieval part, with the Praetorian Palace, called Certaldo Alto, which is located above a hill and the modern part of Certaldo which extends onto the plains and followed the Medieval settlement. The origins of Certaldo date back to Etruscan and Roman times, its toponym in fact is derived from the Latin cerrus altus meaning hill covered with Turkey oak. The first we hear of the town is in 1100 when Frederick I Barbarossa ceded the territory to the Alberti Counts who ruled until the end of the thirteenth century. With the power of Florence, Certaldo was the centre of the Vicarage at the beginning of 1400. In part of Certaldo Alta, the medieval type village, the Pretorian Palace, the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, author of the Decamerone, beautiful churches and the nobles’ palaces, tower houses and the narrow streets leading to the circle of walls can still be found intact. Castello di Cabbiavoli The Puccioni family is pleased to Welcome you in Cabbiavoli and wish you a pleasant stay! Please treat our Home as your Home Article published by the Magazine Italy - June 2005 ‘Cabbiavoli Castle - a Tuscan paradise’ by Adam Butler Situated prominently on a Tuscan hilltop amidst the rolling, vine and olive tree strewn hills around the town of Castelfiorentino lies the astonishingly beautiful Cabbiavoli Castle. This typically grand, Florentine-style residential complex comprises of a main building with a Baroque-façade where the living quarters are located, flanked by a tall medieval brick tower on one side and a little chapel dating to the 13th century on the other. Originally built in 1210 by a certain Count Alberti di Certaldo who was chief of the ruling Longobard family that dominated the nearby Elsa valley, the castle of Cabbiavoli was originally a fortified “borgo” of the Alberti family and in fact it still retained its farm and granary until the renovations in the late 1940s. The only parts remaining of the original fortified castle and the adjacent buildings are the surrounding defensive walls and the tower. This brick tower still stands proudly today (albeit slightly leaning) and, flanked by a huge ancient pine tree, offers dramatic views of the undulating, fertile countryside below, as far as the towered town of San Gimignano which is just visible on the horizon to the south. The Alberti family owned and lived in the castle until the 17th century, after which it fell into the hands of the patrician Brandini family. In 1900 Alice Brandini married Cesare Puccioni, son of a local entrepreneur Luigi who by 1888 had founded a chemicals factory just north of the town of Castelfiorentino.

Santo Spirito in Florence: Brunelleschi, the Opera, the Quartiere and the Cantiere Submitted by Rocky Ruggiero to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Art History and Visual Culture In March 2017. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature)…………………………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract The church of Santo Spirito in Florence is universally accepted as one of the architectural works of Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446). It is nevertheless surprising that contrary to such buildings as San Lorenzo or the Old Sacristy, the church has received relatively little scholarly attention. Most scholarship continues to rely upon the testimony of Brunelleschi’s earliest biographer, Antonio di Tuccio Manetti, to establish an administrative and artistic initiation date for the project in the middle of Brunelleschi’s career, around 1428. Through an exhaustive analysis of the biographer’s account, and subsequent comparison to the extant documentary evidence from the period, I have been able to establish that construction actually began at a considerably later date, around 1440. It is specifically during the two and half decades after Brunelleschi’s death in 1446 that very little is known about the proceedings of the project. A largely unpublished archival source which records the machinations of the Opera (works committee) of Santo Spirito from 1446-1461, sheds considerable light on the progress of construction during this period, as well as on the role of the Opera in the realization of the church.
