Cedar River Water Supply The Cedar River Watershed is located 35 miles southeast of . The 90,638-acre watershed supports a diverse ecosystem and provides about 70% of the to 1.4 million people in the greater Seattle area. From the Cedar River Watershed, melting snow and rain are gathered and stored in the Chester Morse Lake and the Masonry Pool reservoirs created by the Masonry Dam. The dam diverts the water into two large penstocks which drop water 620 feet to the hydroelectric power plant at Cedar Falls, the birthplace of . After the water generates electricity at Cedar Falls, it is released back into the river and continues to flow downstream for 12 more miles to the Landsburg diversion dam. At Landsburg, an average of 18% of the river is diverted for drinking water. It is screened to remove debris, chlo- rinated to remove microbial contaminants and fluoridated before being sent to . At Lake Youngs it is ozonated for odor and taste improvements and ex- posed to ultraviolet light to disable microbial contaminants such as chlorine- resistant Cryptosporidium. Lime and additional chlorine are also added. The remaining 82% of the Cedar River's annual flow continues downstream past Landsburg, through Maple Valley and Renton, flowing into Lake , , and out the Chittenden Locks in Ballard to .

Commissioner Stephen Puryear

The staff of Cedar River Water & Sewer District, would like to welcome Stephen Puryear as a newly elected commissioner of the District. Both he and his wife are longtime residents of the Fairwood and Maple Valley area. Although Steve is cur- rently enjoying his retirement, after a long career in the commercial banking industry, he wanted to continue to serve his local community. He chose to accomplish that goal by running for commissioner of his local water district.

Congratulations Steve on your election and welcome aboard! Watershed Tours

This 2.5 hour bus tour includes driving through the historic townsite of Cedar Falls, walking across the Masonry Dam, seeing Chester Morse Lake and expe- riencing Cedar Falls Waterfall. Along the way, your guide will share stories and pictures.

Backflow Assembly Testing Required Annually

The District’s Premise Isolation Cross Connection Control Program is intended to protect the public water supply from non-potable water. A cross connection which results in a backflow incident, al- lows potentially unsafe, non-potable water to enter the water supply, which could then be served to other customers. The District takes water quality seriously. If you have a potential source of cross connection, such as an irrigation system not currently protected by a backflow device, or know of others who may, please contact the District and we will assist those customers in bringing their systems into compliance. Devices required for these systems are a Double Check Valve or a Reduced Pressure Backflow Assembly, depending on the level of potential hazard and they must be on the Washington State list of approved devices. In addition, because they are mechanical devices and are not impervious to failure, they must be tested by a certified Backflow Assembly Tester upon installation and annually thereafter. Installation and annual test results are required to be sent to the District for record. If you are considering installing an irrigation system, please contact the District’s Cross Connection Control Specialist for our installation procedure and policies.
