ICBS2014 — Preliminary Program Keynote Speakers Kevan Shokat, University of California, San Francisco Modulating Signaling via Polypharmacology of Kinases and RAS Kevan Shokat is an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology at the University of California at San Francisco. He is also a professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California at Berkeley. After receiving his PhD in organic chemistry at University of California at Berkeley with Professor Peter Schultz, and post-doctoral work in immunology at Stanford University with Professor Chris Goodnow, Dr. Shokat began his independent research career at Princeton. He has received numerous awards including being named a fellow of several prestigious research foundations including the Pew Foundation, Searle Foundation, Sloan Foundation, Glaxo-Wellcome Foundation, and the Cotrell Foundation. He has also received the Eli Lilly Award. He was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences (2010), the Institute of Medicine (2011), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2011). He has focused on the development of chemical methods for investigating cellular signal transduction pathways—with a particular focus on protein kinases and lipid kinases. Dr. Shokat uses a combination of chemical synthesis and protein engineering to create uniquely traceable and regulatable kinases, allowing the function of over 100 different kinases to be uncovered across all disease areas including oncology, metabolism, and infectious disease. Zixin Deng, Shanghai Jiaotong University Synthetic Microbiology for Natural Products and Fine Chemicals Zixin Deng is a professor of microbiology, dean of the Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Life Sciences & Biotechnology and Wuhan University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the head of the National Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism. He is also the current president of Chinese Society of Microbiology. He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Science Academy for the Developing World (formally the Third World Academy of Sciences, TWAS), and a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Dr. Deng received his BS in microbiology from Huazhong Agricultural University and PhD in microbial genetics from the University of East Anglia, UK. He worked in the streptomyces group at John Innes Centre. Dr. Deng’s areas of interest include streptomyces genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology of antibiotic biosynthesis, and DNA backbone modification by sulfur (phosphorothiolation). Giulio Superti-Furga, Austria Academy of Sciences Systems Chemical Biology of Drug Action and Drug Transport Giulio Superti-Furga directs the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine for the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria. His work includes the elucidation of basic regulatory mechanisms of tyrosine kinases in human cancers, the discovery of fundamental organization principles of the proteome of higher organisms and the development
