But not all sugars are bad for you. Consider fucose, an essential sugar the body needs. Without it, neurons can’t communicate, kidneys can’t filter blood, and skin can’t stay hydrated. Chemical biologist Carolyn • Bertozzi and her group are trying to learn more about the role of fucose in www.hhmi.org development. To do this, they injected modified versions of fucose into live, single-celled zebrafish embryos. As the embryos developed, the altered fucose molecules were incorporated into the sugars that coat cell surfaces. Using a simple chemical reaction, the team attached a labeled probe molecule to the altered fucose so they could visualize its location in the developing embryo. In this image of a 19-hour-old zebrafish embryo, labeled fucose (red) glows in the peripheral cells. Just one of many ways chemistry is helping answer biological questions (see “Living Chemistry,” page 12). Mandal, *a Michele Soleilhavoupb and Guy Bertrand *b Although N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been known as ligands for organometallic complexes since the 1960s, these carbenes did not attract considerable attention until Arduengo et al. reported the isolation of a metal-free imidazol-2-ylidene in 1991. In 2001 Crabtree et al. reported a few complexes featuring an NHC isomer, namely an imidazol-5-ylidene, also termed abnormal NHC (aNHCs). In 2009, it was shown that providing to protect the C-2 position of an imidazolium salt, the deprotonation occurred at the C-5 position, affording imidazol-5-ylidenes that could be isolated. Over the last ten years, stable aNHCs have been used for designing a range of catalysts employing Pd(II), Cu(I), Ni(II), Fe(0), Zn(II), Ag(I), and Au(I/III)metalbased precursors. These catalysts were utilized for different organic transformations such as the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, C–H bond activation, dehydrogenative coupling, Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition (click reaction), hydroheteroarylation, hydrosilylation reaction and migratory insertion of carbenes. Main-group metal complexes were also synthesized, including K(I), Al(III), Zn(II), Sn(II), Ge(II), and Si(II/IV). Among them, K(I), Al(III), and Zn(II) complexes were used for the polymerization of caprolactone and rac-lactide at room temperature. In addition, based on the superior nucleophilicity of aNHCs, relative to that of their nNHCs isomers, they were used for small molecules activation, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O), tetrahydrofuran (THF), tetrahydrothiophene and 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9BBN). -

The 29th International Conference on Photochemistry Boulder, Colorado • July 21 – 26, 2019 ABSTRACTS The 29th International Conference on Photochemistry Boulder, Colorado July 21 – 26, 2019 PLENARY SPEAKER ABSTRACTS PLENARY PRESENTATIONS ICP2019 Code: Plenary Presenter: Hiroshi MASUHARA (TWN) Abstract Title: Optical Manipulation in Chemistry Co-Author(s): Abstract: Photochemistry and spectroscopy study various dynamics and mechanism of molecules and materials induced by their interaction with light. Optical force is another interaction between light and matter, which was experimentally confirmed by Lebedev in late 19th century. Utilizing this force Ashkin proposed as “Optical Tweezers” in 1986 and demonstrated high potential in application to bio-science, which was awarded Nobel Prize Physics last year. Optical force was also expected to control molecular motion in solution and eventually chemical reaction. In 1988 we started to explore new molecular phenomena characteristic of optical force by combining optical trapping with fluorescence, absorption, electrochemical, and ablation methods. We have studied on microparticles, microdroplets, nanoparticles, polymers, supramolecules, micelles, amino acids and proteins in solution and reported their unique behavior. The remarkable achievement was performed in 2007 when the trapping laser was focused at solution surface. Various amino acids are crystalized, giving one single crystal at the position where trapping laser is focused and at the time when irradiated. This optical manipulation at solution surface is extended to dielectric and gold nanoparticles and to glass/solution interface. The initially trapped polystyrene nanoparticles at the focus form their periodical structure and scatter/propagate the trapping laser, shifting trapping site outside of the focus and forming a single large circle assembly. -

Good conversions were observed at room temperature for the formation of di- and tri-substituted olefins by ring-closing metathesis. It also allowed for the ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctadiene, as well as for the cross-metathesis of cis-1,4-diacetoxy-2-butene with allyl-benzene, with enhanced Z/E kinetic selectivity over classical NHC-based catalysts.
