SELECTED PROFESSOR GUY BERTRAND HONOURS & AWARDS 2012 Raymond Siedle Distinguished Lecture, Guy Bertrand Indiana University, Bloomington 2011 PKU-Eli Lily Lectureship, Peking Distinguished Professor University, Beijing, China University of California, San Diego 2011 Pattison Lectureship, University of Department of Chemistry Western Ontario 2010 Grand Prix Le Bel of the French Chemical La Jolla, CA Society 2010 Senior Humboldt Research Award 2010 Bruker Lectureship, University of Toronto Guy Bertrand was born in Limoges, France. He completed his undergraduate degree at Université de 2010 Anthony J. Arduengo, III Lectureship of Limoges in 1972. He then continued his studies, receiving the degree of Ingénieur from the Ecole the University of Alabama National Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier in 1975. Professor Bertand then attended Université 2009 Sir Ronald Nyholm Lectureship and Paul Sabatier in Toulouse, France for his graduate studies and received a Docteur ès-Sciences Medal of the Royal Society of Chemistry Physiques in 1979. Following graduate school, he worked as a researcher at Sanofi-Recherche 2009 Novartis Lectureship at the Scripps Company in Toulouse from 1980-1981. Professor Bertrand was then Directeur de Recherche at the Research Institute, La Jolla, California Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Toulouse from 1988-1998. He was also Director of the 2007 East Cost Lecturer, Scotland Laboratoire Heterochimie Fondamentale et Appliquée at Université Paul Sabatier from 1999-2005. Professor Bertrand was also a Professor at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris from 2000-2004. Most 2006 Fellow of the American Association for recently, he has held the position of Distinguished Professor at University of California, Riverside Advancement of Science since 2001 and moved to the San Diego campus in 2012. 2004 Member of the French Academy of Sciences Professor Bertrand’s research focuses on the development of stable carbene species as ligands for 2003 Member of the European Academy of transition metal catalysts and as mimics of transition metal centers. Carbenes are highly reactive Sciences intermediate species useful in a variety of synthetic reactions. His group has developed numerous 2003 Taiwan National Science Foundation N-heterocyclic carbenes as strong donor ligands for ruthenium species. These species are effective Distinguished Lectureship catalysts for olefin metathesis reactions and for hydroamination of unactivated carbon-carbon bonds. 2002 Member of the Academia Europea They have also prepared a number of novel ligands, including stable mesoionic carbenes and stable 2000 Member of the French Academy of phosphinonitrenes. The latter, while stable at room temperature, still effectively react by adding nitrogen to unsaturated carbon sites. Carbenes have also been coordinated to both neutral and Technology anionic boron, forming Lewis Bases. The ability to stabilize these highly reactive species to a bottle- 1999 Japanese Society for Promotion of able form is invaluable to many synthetic applications. Science Award 1998 Médaille d’Argent du CNRS Professor Bertrand has received numerous honours and awards including the Grand Prix Le Bel of 1998 Kharasch Lectureship, University of the French Chemical Society, the Sir Ronald Nyholm Lectureship and medal, the Médaille d’Argent of Chicago the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, the Senior Humboldt Research Award, and the 1996 Elected to French Academy of Sciences French-German Humboldt Award. He has received several Invited Lectureships and has given over (Correspondent) 125 invited talks. He is also a member of many organizations including the American Association of 1994 French-German Humboldt Award the Advancement of Science, the French Academy of Science, the European Academy of Science, 1993 International Council on Main Group Academia Europea, and the French Academy of Technology.
