    MESSAGES FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD There has been a wide gap between science and society. The last three hundred years of the history of modern science indicates to us that many research results disappeared or took a long time to become useful to society. Due to the difficulties of bridging this gap, this stage has been recently called the valley of death or the nightmare stage (Note 1). Rather than passively waiting, therefore, researchers and engineers who understand the potential of the research should actively try to bridge the gap. To bridge the gap, technology integration (i.e. Type 2 Basic Research − Note 2) of scientific findings for utilizing them in society, in addition to analytical research, has been one of the wheels of progress (i.e. Full Research − Note 3). Traditional journals, have been collecting much analytical type knowledge that is factual knowledge and establishing many scientific disciplines (i.e. Type 1 Basic Research − Note 4). Technology integration research activities, on the other hand, have been kept as personal know-how. They have not been formalized as universal knowledge of what ought to be done. As there must be common theories, principles, and practices in the methodologies of technology integration, we regard it as basic research. This is the reason why we have decided to publish “Synthesiology”, a new academic journal. Synthesiology is a coined word combining “synthesis” and “ology”. Synthesis which has its origin in Greek means integration. Ology is a suffix attached to scientific disciplines. Each paper in this journal will present scenarios selected for their societal value, identify elemental knowledge and/or technologies to be integrated, and describe the procedures and processes to achieve this goal.

    Chapter 17 Found in the Osaka Castle: Mysterious stonewall of the Nakagawa family from the Oka clan The Osaka Castle was captured during the summer siege of Osaka. After the battle, the Oka clan took on the job of repairing stonewalls when the Osaka Castle was rebuilt by the Tokugawa family. Many mysterious symbols from this time have been left behind as clues that are linked to Christianity. News about Osaka Castle and the Oka clan (based on an article from Sankei Shimbun dated November 20th) was delivered from the department of culture, Ibaraki City Government on November 20th, 2013. An engraved mark inscribed on a stone of wall had been discovered in the Osaka Castle ruins. The news coin- cided with the celebration of the “sister city” relationship between Taketa city and Ibaraki city. In November 2013, many stones inscribed with mysterious symbols were unearthed from an excavation site in Osaka Castle. These were stone materials used for the stonewalls that the Oka clan had been responsible for during the rebuilding of Osaka Castle. 19 of the 26 stones unearthed had mysterious symbols inscribed onto their surfaces. There were three types of symbols: “中” (Photo 1), “ ” (Photo 1), “ ” (Photo 2). The character “中” comes from the Nakagawa family name, and is usually seen and not an uncommon sighting in the historical materials of the Oka clan. However, the other two symbols remained a mystery. The “卍” symbol has been used in Buddhism since ancient times but the ones unearthed from Osaka Castle are reversed. This could mean something opposite to the Buddhism world.

    2021 Summer Special Exhibition From Ieyasu to Yoshinao The Transition to a Powerful Pre-Modern State July 17 (Sat.) - September 12 (Sun.), 2021 INTRODUCTION Striving through the sengoku (Warring States) period, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) finally achieved the unification of the whole country. Yoshinao (1601-1650), the ninth son of Ieyasu, was assigned to govern the Owari domain during the era of peace. The two were father and son, yet they lived in contrasting times. Yoshinao, who inherited a large fortune of assets and texts from Ieyasu, established the foundations of the Owari domain and led Nagoya to prosperity. Focusing on the principles of their rule, passed down from Ieyasu to Yoshinao, this exhibition traces their lives, their administration, and Yoshinao’s feelings towards Ieyasu, as observed in historical documents and inherited objects.
