Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis compares Umbria before and after the Roman conquest in order to assess the impact of the imposition of Roman control over this area of central Italy. There are four sections specifically on Umbria and two more general chapters of introduction and conclusion. The introductory chapter examines the most important issues for the history of the Italian regions in this period and the extent to which they are relevant to Umbria, given the type of evidence that survives. The chapter focuses on the concept of state formation, and the information about it provided by evidence for urbanisation, coinage, and the creation of treaties. The second chapter looks at the archaeological and other available evidence for the history of Umbria before the Roman conquest, and maps the beginnings of the formation of the state through the growth in social complexity, urbanisation and the emergence of cult places. -

Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society 81, 2015, pp. 361–392 © The Prehistoric Society doi:10.1017/ppr.2015.17 Connected Histories: the Dynamics of Bronze Age Interaction and Trade 1500–1100 BC By KRISTIAN KRISTIANSEN1 and PAULINA SUCHOWSKA-DUCKE2 The Bronze Age was the first epoch in which societies became irreversibly linked in their co-dependence on ores and metallurgical skills that were unevenly distributed in geographical space. Access to these critical resources was secured not only via long-distance physical trade routes, making use of landscape features such as river networks, as well as built roads, but also by creating immaterial social networks, consisting of interpersonal relations and diplomatic alliances, established and maintained through the exchange of extraordinary objects (gifts). In this article, we reason about Bronze Age communication networks and apply the results of use-wear analysis to create robust indicators of the rise and fall of political and commercial networks. In conclusion, we discuss some of the historical forces behind the phenomena and processes observable in the archaeological record of the Bronze Age in Europe and beyond. 1 The Founding of the City 1. The environment of rome’s early hisTory Italy: A Geographically Fragmented Land italy is not a naturally unified land. It is a mosaic of different regions and sub-regions that through- out history have had difficulty communicating with each other. It lacks a large natural “center” the way, for instance, France and England have geographically coherent central homelands, or as Egypt or Mesopotamia had in antiquity. Symbolic of the way the ancients thought about Italy was the fact that for a good portion of their history, Romans did not think of the Po valley, today Italy’s most productive region, as part of Italy, and with good reason. The Po constituted what amounted to a separate country, being generally more in contact with continental Europe through the Brenner Pass than with peninsular Italy to the south where the Apennines impeded communications. The Romans called the Po valley Gallia Cisalpina—that is, “Gaul-on-this-side-of-the-alps.” (Gaul proper or modern france was Gallia Transalpina—“Gaul-on-the other side-of-the-alps”). it was an alien land inhabited by Gauls (Gaels—or, as we know them more commonly, Celts). Vestiges of this sense of regional diversity persist to the present. An active political movement currently seeks to detach northern Italy from the rest of the country, arguing that as the most developed and wealthiest part of italy, the north should not be forced to subsidize backward parts of southern Italy and Sicily. Other parts of Italy besides the Po valley are still difficult to reach from each other. -

Received: 1 October 2019; Accepted: 26 November 2019; Published: 7 December 2019 Abstract: A new means of minting currency was first used at the Hall Mint in Tyrol in 1567. This new minting process employed a roller instead of a hammer and used hydropower to fuel the laminating and coining mills, as well as ancillary equipment, such as the forge or the lathe. In 1577, Philip II of Spain expressed his interest in the new technology and, after a successful technology transfer negotiation with the County of Tyrol, Juan de Herrera was commissioned to design a factory to accommodate this new minting process. The resulting design seamlessly integrated this new technology. The architectural layout of the factory was derived from the integration of different trades related to the manufacturing workflow, and their effective distribution within a more effective workplace allowed for better use of the hydraulic resources available, and, thus, improvements in the productivity and reliability of the manufacturing process, as well as in the quality of the finished product. Juan de Herrera’s design led to the creation of a ground-breaking manufacturing process, unparalleled in the mint industry in Europe at the time. -

Thanks to archaeological excavation, monumental buildings, gates, city walls, roads, and ships have been discovered. These sometimes-gigantic structures were constructed without the benefit of bull dozers, cranes, lifts, drills, or any of the modern tools with which we are familiar and lived in relative luxury. So, how did the ancient people move materials and build these amazing cities with surprising amenities? This class seeks to elucidate the ingenuity of the ancient mind in order to understand their technology which in turn will help us to better understand our own and apply these, and new, ideas to the future. Questions that will be addressed include what the ancients knew, when and how did they know it; what machines and tools did they use and for what purposes; how does technology and engineering help society advance; how can we apply these principles to our world and to the future? Fall Semester: The big stuff - monumental constructions, residential dwellings, urban planning, etc. Spring Semester: The smaller things – machines, maritime transportation, terrestrial transportation, medicine, time-keeping, etc. This syllabus will be distributed on the first day of class in the spring semester. -

First in Flight: Etruscan Winged “Demons” Marvin Morris University of California, Berkeley Classical Civilizations Class of 2016 Abstract: Etruscan winged Underworld figures (commonly referred to as winged “demons”) represent one of the most fascinating and least understood aspects of funerary iconography in ancient Etruria. Their function, along with their origin, has long been the subject of scholarly debates. However, over the last two decades, scholars have begun to take a closer look at these chthonic figures. Recent scholarship has begun to provide answers to many of the most fundamental questions concerning their role, even if disagreements remain over their murky origins. Expanding on interpretations that have cast new light on how these winged (and non winged) Underworld figures functioned, questions concerning Etruscan religious beliefs and funerary ideology can now be reconsidered. Such regulations can be found on the local, national, and international levels, but each level must be considered with the others in mind. This Paper documents the growth of wine regulation throughout the world, focusing primarily on the national and international levels. The regulations of France, Italy, Germany, Spain, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand are examined in the context of the European Community and United Nations. Particular attention is given to the diverse ways in which each country has developed its laws and compromised between tradition and internationalism. I.
