The Journal of Comparative Psychology (JCP): A Network Analysis of the Status of Comparative Psychology Daniel Lahham A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTERS OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN PSYCHOLOGY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO January, 2014 © Daniel Lahham, 2014 Network Analysis of the JCP ii Abstract Comparative psychology’s relationship to various other sub-disciplines and scientific “movements” has been discussed by many scholars throughout its history. The majority of these analyses took the form of frequency counts of the different subject species used within scientific periodicals (Schneirla, 1946; Beach, 1950; Dukes, 1960; Lockard, 1971) and presented similar conclusions: rats were the most commonly researched organism and the study of learning was the key to understanding behavior. The most popular of these critiques was Frank Ambrose Beach’s “The Snark was a Boojum” (1950). Beach argued that comparative psychology, with the advent of behaviorism, slowly became a discipline focused only on rat learning in mazes. Donald Dewsbury (1984) responded to these discussions claiming that frequency counts alone could not depict the success and failures of the comparative discipline. Instead, he argued that comparative psychology maintained a historically continuous tradition of excellence off the efforts of a small group of prominent comparative psychologists. In this study, I attempted to “bridge” the gap between these two competing views of the comparative discipline in order to view the legitimacy of both claims. Using network analysis, a tool common to digital history, I investigated metadata (organism studied, scientist, institution) from the Journal of Comparative Psychology during the period of 1911 to 1950. -

BUILDING A “CROSS-ROADS DISCIPLINE” AT MCGILL UNIVERSITY: A HISTORY OF EARLY EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY IN POSTWAR CANADA ERIC OOSENBRUG A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Psychology. Graduate Program in Psychology York University Toronto, Ontario October 2020 © Eric Oosenbrug, 2020 Abstract This dissertation presents an account of the development of psychology at McGill University from the late nineteenth century through to the early 1960s. The department of psychology at McGill represents an alternative to the traditional American-centered narrative of the cognitive revolution and later emergence of the neurosciences. In the years following World War II, a series of psychological experiments established McGill as among the foremost departments of psychology in North America. This thesis is an institutional history that reconstructs the origins, evolution, and dramatic rise of McGill as a major center for psychological research. The experiments conducted in the early 1950s, in the areas of sensory restriction, motivation, and pain psychology, were transformative in their scope and reach. Central to this story is Donald O. Hebb, author of The Organization of Behavior (1949), who arrived at McGill in 1947 to find the charred remains of a department. I argue that the kind of psychology Hebb established at McGill was different from most departments in North America; this is developed through a number of interwoven storylines focused on the understanding of a particular character of McGill psychology - a distinctive “psychological style” - and its broader historical importance for Canadian psychology, for North American psychology, and for psychology across the globe. -

1 Shepherd I. Franz (1874-1933) and Karl S. Lashley (1890-1958): An Example of Unfair Historical Recognition? Roger K. This was occasioned by my donation of Lashley’s microsurgical instruments in a Fatima cigarette tin (his brand), his personal collection of Franz’s early reprints, and one of his standard rat brain diagrams that Lashley hand-labeled to identify reference points such as the genu of the corpus callosum and the nucleus ruber (red nucleus). A SELECTED HISTORY OF CORTICAL FUNCTIONING: I Localization versus Anti-localization Localization Emerges and Prevails (circa 1780-1824) Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) based his localization theory on attributing mental faculties to different parts of the brain by correlating bumps and recesses on the skull presumed to reflect to well-developed or under- developed faculties. Gall referred to this science as craniology, organology, or physiognomy. Thomas Forster coined the terem "phrenology" (1815). Gall's junior colleague, J. G. Spurzheim 1776-1832) adopted the term phrenology and popularized it. Gall disliked the term. 3 Gall’s method was, in principle, correlational. The main problems scientifically were: (a) poor control in subject selection. (b) subjectivity in observations. -

Thomas The University of Georgia This biographical essay is adapted slightly from an invited/submitted/accepted chapter for a proposed book about some of the past presidents of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology, hence, that emphasis in the present manuscript. As there is some uncertainty regarding the publication of the book, the pre-publication manuscript is provided here for those who are interested in Shepherd I. Franz. Shepherd Ivory Franz Introduction Shepherd Ivory Franz was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on May 27, 1874. His parents were D. W. William Franz (a native of Hanover, Germany) and Frances Elvira Stoddard Franz (Anonymous, 19261; Woodworth, 1934). Franz attended public schools in Jersey City. He enrolled at Columbia University in 1890, where he subsequently earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1894 and the Doctorate of Philosophy degree in psychology in 1899. As an undergraduate senior, Franz began 2 working with James McKeen Cattell who was Wilhelm Wundt’s first American doctoral student in psychology. Wundt is recognized, generally, to be the founder of experimental psychology. Cattell continued as Franz’s mentor for the doctoral degree. Franz also spent a semester in Wundt’s laboratory in 1896, although Franz wrote that “Wundt was seldom seen except at the time of his lectures” (Franz, 1932, p. 92). Franz noted that he served as Versuchperson (subject) in three investigations in Wundt’s laboratory. Franz’s doctoral dissertation was an investigation of parameters of visual after-images. However, most of his subsequent research involved basic and applied research on brain functions. -

Networking Western Psychology’s Elite: a Digital Analysis of “A History of Psychology in Autobiography” Shayna Hope Anne Fox Lee THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN THE HISTORY & THEORY OF PSYCHOLOGY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO DECEMBER 2014 © Shayna Hope Anne Fox Lee 2014 ii Abstract This thesis analyzes digital social networks for the institutional affiliations of the one hundred and twenty authors in the A History of Psychology in Autobiography (AHPA) book series. The introductory section contextualizes the analyses for the nine volumes in terms of the series’ historiographic foundations, socio-historical influences, and a history of the production of the first volume. It asserts that the series editors’ privileged disciplinary positions and the series’ unusual historiographic features render it an unusually precise internalist historical record of elite perspectives. The analytical chapter forwards the position that the AHPA networks illustrate the accuracy of Kurt Danziger’s (2006) historical premise of intellectual ‘centers’ and ‘peripheries’ in Western psychology’s disciplinary geography. The conclusion includes an assessment of the digital methods used, consideration of future directions, and a critical discussion of the AHPA series and how this thesis fits into a larger framework of ethical historiography. Franz was an important figure in psychology of the last century, and historians of psy- chology have given recognition to much of his work. However, his experimental work with animals and his pioneer investigations in experimental and clinicalneuropsychology have been largely ignored. This article reviews his conceptual, assessment, and treatment contributions, including (1) his pioneering work on the use of learned behavior as a baseline for the study of cerebral ablations, (2) his interest in brain plasticity, (3) his development of comprehensive psychological assessment methods, and (4) his work on the rehabilitationof neurological patients with techniques derivedfrom his animal experiments. His work predated much of what is now part of the conceptual substance of the experimental and clin- ical neurosciences. Shepherd Ivory Franz (1874–1933) was an important dard) Franz.
