Vol. 19, No. 8 August, 1922 THE PSYCHOLOGICAL BULLETIN CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY— 1916-1921 By COLEMAN R. GRIFFITH University of Illinois Contributions to the history of psychology since 1915 fall nat- urally into two groups. There are, on the one hand, the systematic and the experimental studies which have made the science six years older. There are, on the other hand, the historical and biographical notes and the large and searching retrospections which relate con- temporary psychology to earlier stages in the development of the science. It is to an enumeration of these contributions that the present paper is devoted. We cannot, of course, comment in detail upon the character of contemporary psychology, for an historian, speaking of his own times is like the Hawaiian surf-rider who seeks to judge the incoming tide from his experiences while riding a single wave; but it is possible to get a certain amount of information about the current trend of a science by considering events of various kinds which reflect or which have, presumably, influenced its general course. These events taken in conjunction with what appear, at the present moment, to be outstanding experimental and systematic studies may give a suggestion of the history of the last few years. In psychology, as well as in many other sciences, the most important event, during the period under survey, was the World War. The science of psychology was, as all know, well on the way toward complete mobilization for military purposes when the war ended. Since many of the consequences of this reorganization have not yet appeared, a detailed account of this aspect of the period must fall to a future historian. -

LA EVOLUCION HISTORICA DEL PROBLEMA La variable «sexo» ha tenido y sigue teniendo una importancia capital den- tro de la realidad social a juzgar por los estudios sociológico-antropológicos (Mead, 1935; MurClock, 1937; Durkheim, 1947; Parsons y Bales, 1955), desde prácticamente el comienzo de la humanidad. La especialización de tareas o segregación de actividades de acuerdo con el rol sexual aparecen como cons- tantes a lo largo de la historia determinando en buena medida las estructuras sociales, independientemente de que se verifiquen o no los estudios actuales sobre la existencia de principios o modelos universales de segregación de ac- tividades económicas según el sexo (Aronoff y Grano, 1975) y también, in- dependientemente de la valoración que se quiera dar a estos principios en la construcción del edificio social actual (Yorburg, 1974; Rosaldo y Lamphere, 1974; Rosenblatt y Cunningham, 1976; Quinn, 1977; Kelly, 1981). Dentro de este contexto, la especulación en torno a las diferencias entre los sexos parece haber sido tema frecuente tanto por parte de filósofos, poe- tas, literatos y hombres de ciencia en general como por parte del hombre de la calle en todas las épocas de la historia (Ellis, 1904; Terman y Miles, 1963; Rocheblave-Spenlé, 1964; Bakan, 1966). -

Jeanne Marecek Since its early days the field of psychology has issued pronouncements about women and set out prescriptions for their mental health and proper conduct. Women in the discipline often dissented from the pronouncements and prescrip tions of mainstream psychology, but for much of psychology’s one hundred- year history women’s voices were few and far between. The past quarter of a century has witnessed a dramatic increase in the overall number of women in psychology. Moreover, many women, committed to feminism in their personal lives, have been committed to feminist ideals in their work as researchers, thera pists, and teachers as well. Two organizations, one within the main professional association (the Division of the Psychology of Women of the American Psycho logical Association, established in 1973) and one outside (the Association for Women in Psychology, established in 1969), exist, providing a locus of colle- giality and institutional support for feminist scholarship and activism (Mednick and Urbanski 1991; Tiefer 1991). -

The Journal of Comparative Psychology (JCP): A Network Analysis of the Status of Comparative Psychology Daniel Lahham A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTERS OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN PSYCHOLOGY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO January, 2014 © Daniel Lahham, 2014 Network Analysis of the JCP ii Abstract Comparative psychology’s relationship to various other sub-disciplines and scientific “movements” has been discussed by many scholars throughout its history. The majority of these analyses took the form of frequency counts of the different subject species used within scientific periodicals (Schneirla, 1946; Beach, 1950; Dukes, 1960; Lockard, 1971) and presented similar conclusions: rats were the most commonly researched organism and the study of learning was the key to understanding behavior. The most popular of these critiques was Frank Ambrose Beach’s “The Snark was a Boojum” (1950). Beach argued that comparative psychology, with the advent of behaviorism, slowly became a discipline focused only on rat learning in mazes. Donald Dewsbury (1984) responded to these discussions claiming that frequency counts alone could not depict the success and failures of the comparative discipline. Instead, he argued that comparative psychology maintained a historically continuous tradition of excellence off the efforts of a small group of prominent comparative psychologists. In this study, I attempted to “bridge” the gap between these two competing views of the comparative discipline in order to view the legitimacy of both claims. Using network analysis, a tool common to digital history, I investigated metadata (organism studied, scientist, institution) from the Journal of Comparative Psychology during the period of 1911 to 1950. -

Morawski* IN 1929 JAMES ANGELL, president of Yale, announced plans for a unique teaching and research center for those fields "directly concerned with the problems of man's individual and group conduct. The purpose is to correlate knowledge and coordinate technique in related fields that greater progress may be made in the understanding of human life. The time has certainly come once again to attempt a fruitful synthesis of knowledge." The New York Times described the experiment as dismantling the disciplinary "Great Wall of China" and compared it with the Renaissance transformation of knowledge.1 The Insti- tute of Human Relations (IHR), as the center was named, received over $4.5 million from the Rockefeller Foundation for its first decade of operation. -

The Executive Committee, at its August 1987 meeting, approved the proposal and requested that he chair the committee. The criteria for the selection of candidates for a monograph were that a person be a past member of Division 21, deceased, and distinguished for his or her contribution to engineering psychology. The criteria for selection of authors to write about the candidates were familiarity with the candidate, willingness to allow the APA to hold copyright of materials, agreement that all royalties for sale of publication would be assigned to Division 21, and agreement that each essay would be completed in time to make a Division 21 contribution to the celebration of the APA's centenary. BUILDING A “CROSS-ROADS DISCIPLINE” AT MCGILL UNIVERSITY: A HISTORY OF EARLY EXPERIMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY IN POSTWAR CANADA ERIC OOSENBRUG A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Psychology. Graduate Program in Psychology York University Toronto, Ontario October 2020 © Eric Oosenbrug, 2020 Abstract This dissertation presents an account of the development of psychology at McGill University from the late nineteenth century through to the early 1960s. The department of psychology at McGill represents an alternative to the traditional American-centered narrative of the cognitive revolution and later emergence of the neurosciences. In the years following World War II, a series of psychological experiments established McGill as among the foremost departments of psychology in North America. This thesis is an institutional history that reconstructs the origins, evolution, and dramatic rise of McGill as a major center for psychological research. The experiments conducted in the early 1950s, in the areas of sensory restriction, motivation, and pain psychology, were transformative in their scope and reach. Central to this story is Donald O. Hebb, author of The Organization of Behavior (1949), who arrived at McGill in 1947 to find the charred remains of a department. I argue that the kind of psychology Hebb established at McGill was different from most departments in North America; this is developed through a number of interwoven storylines focused on the understanding of a particular character of McGill psychology - a distinctive “psychological style” - and its broader historical importance for Canadian psychology, for North American psychology, and for psychology across the globe. -
