David Kilgour on "Mister Pop": ""Mister Pop" began in Brooklyn, NY, at Gary Olson's Marlborough Farms studio and was completed in the basement hall of First Church Dunedin. There is more synthesizer on this album than the others, mainly an old Juno synth. I do remember having a bath in Brooklyn while Robert was downstairs singing and writing. I thought he was singing "he's a factory man", so I dried off and went down and wrote "Factory Man" while thinking heavily of The Kinks". Robert Scott on "Mister Pop": "I remember thinking at the start of the NY sessions with Gary Olson, "is this the start of a new album?". We were coming up with quite a bit of new stuff, and of course, Gary is great to work with. We carried on at Burlington St in Dunedin with (engineer and Heavy 8) Tex Houston at the controls, good fun from what I remember, lots of mucking around with keyboards and synths. We were going for that Krautrock groove and we sure got it on "Tensile", one of my faves along with the pure pop of "Dreamlife". David Kilgour on "Unknown Country": "The Clean always wanna try something different, but on this LP, we were obsessed with the idea. I remember we generally left vocal ideas to last, after the tracks were recorded, so we never really knew where we were headed. Might also explain all the instrumentals! Made during the Balkan War, hence the reference. And for the freaks, I think "Balkans" is the only Clean track ever to not actually feature The Clean playing. It's all Alan Starrett, as we removed the backing track". Robert Scott on "Unknown Country": "This album is very different from our other albums. We didn't go into the studio with many "song" ideas - a lot of it was written on the spot. I really enjoyed recording this as it was free of expectation. We weren't playing much live at the time. Certainly our most experimental album". With that release, "I Hate Jazz" and "Trust Fund" found new life, and the inclusion of digital-only rarities led to fresh demand for this CD reissue. Recorded in a small A-frame house-turned-makeshift studio outside Ferndale, NY, "New Music And Big Pop" finds Another Michael pushing their sound in a dreamier, more folk-influenced direction, building songs around vulnerable, intimate performances using an ethereal palette of breezy guitars, subtle keyboards, and layered harmonies. As on the band's early EPs, singer and songwriter Michael Doherty's mesmerizing voice is front and center here, calling to mind Robin Pecknold or Ben Bridwell in its reedy, crystalline timbre, but it feels more at home than ever before amidst the album's lush, Technicolor landscape, which the band partnered with producer and fellow housemate Scoops Dardaris to create. Bernice is the experimental pop vessel of musician/songwriter Robin Dann and her longtime collaborators Thom Gill (keyboards, guitar), Philippe Melanson (e-percussion and drums), Daniel Fortin (bass) and Felicity Williams (voice). Together and apart, they have performed with Martha Wainwright, Andy Shauf, Lido Pimienta, Bahamas, KNOWER, and Beverly Glenn Copeland among many others, which led to them being referred in the press as “Toronto’s ever-evolving backing band.” In their own right, however, they have repeatedly proved to be far more than the sum of their considerable parts. Bernice’s Polaris Prize-nominated 2018 LP Puff: In the air without a shape received major international attention, described as an “analytical, self-dissecting monument to ephemerality” by The New York Times, and “a fascinating musical conversation” that blends pop and R&B influences with C86 aesthetics by Pitchfork, alongside high praise from outlets like NPR, FADER, and Stereogum, and many more. With the band's tenth anniversary in their viewfinder, Camera push the button on Prosthuman, their fifth studio album. With the departure of two keyboard virtuosos (Steffen Kahles and Timm Brockmann), for this release Michael Drummer (the drummer) formed at triumvirate with Tim Schroeder (synthesizer) and Alex Kozmidi (guitar). In spite of shifts in instrumentation, the ten tracks comprising the album fall into place like a progressively unfolding narrative. There is no apparent beginning to the record, no obvious ending -- rather more a sense of being right in the middle. CRUCIFIX "Dehumanization" (KUSTOMIZED) KUS04 CD/ LP February 5 street date. "Dehumanization" is the only full length album from the band Crucifix. Recorded in 1983, it is considered a classic American hardcore album and a landmark of anarcho-punk. "Dehumanization" delivers a raging critique of war, violence, displacement, and the decimation of human rights and human dignity - themes at once global in scope and also completely endemic to Reagan-era America. The intensity of this message is matched only by the intensity of the sound: a heavy minimalist construction built on brutal guitar riffs, low-end distortion, hardcore fury and teenage speed. It is an album of pure raw power, a hot blast of personal and political outrage and musical adrenaline. The album preceded much of the hardcore metal crossover of the mid-80s and played an influential but often unacknowledged role in the punk and metal subgenres that followed. "Hot on the heels of last year's drone masterpiece, The Free Territory , comes this hot bowl of noodles from Manchester's most elegantly wasted quintet. And while there might be apt comparisons to be made to some of the best current psych purveyors, the central thrill provided by these sounds makes me think of naught but prime Bay Area ballroom scene acid spew. The guitar lines unspool like electrical cables filled with acid punch, and remain crackling in the air for moments longer than you imagine they can remain afloat. The keys have a bit of a German overtone, but it's the same sort of one that led to the flash of Popol Vuh 's United Artist albums (which are themselves, at heart, paeans to the Bay.) The sound here is the sort of thing true believers recall as the highest moments of Man in live concert flight. Raging, raving guitars to soak your soul once and for all. Don't fear the downpour. Manchester's Dead Sea Apes and Godalming's Black Tempest engage in a mind meld of galactic proportions on this; both band's first outing on vinyl. Both entities weave together seamlessly as "Grey Alphabets" recalls Goblin 's giallo soundtracks, whilst "Wilder Penfield" pulses with post-punk metal-loid Harmonia kraut vibes. Side two is given over to the 25+minute "Heliopause" -- a dubby astral meditation, where Oneida meet Tangerine Dream in an elongated komische drift. On ‘Frid’, Hills journey inward, via mantric repetition and hip-shaking pulsations as on the ten-minute monolith, ‘ Och Solen Sänkte Sig Röd’, yet they can also lurch into the unknown via the fuzz/wah odysseys of the aptly monikered ‘National Drone’ and the ceremonial exhortations of the closing ‘Death Will Find A Way.’ They have landed on a rich and intoxicating sound that sidesteps the cliches that often plague modern-day psych. The end result is 38 minutes that translate into a feast for seasoned crate-diggers and fresh-faced converts alike. HOOPER, BRIAN "I Won't Bend For You" (BANG!) Almost three years after the death of Brian Henry Hooper (The Beasts of Bourbon), we find this new posthumous album that he recorded at the end of his days with the collaboration of friends of the stature of: Kim Salmon (The Beasts of Bourbon, Scientists, Surrealists, Salmon, etc.) / Spencer P. Jones (The Beasts of Bourbon, The Johnnys, The Green Mist, The Butcher Shop, etc.). / Mick Harvey (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, The Wallbangers, etc.) among others. The album goes a step beyond his previous album "What Would I Know?" revealing a final period in the musical and personal evolution of the artist, where the darkest and most intimate melodies intersect, announcing the subsequent outcome, as well as the genius and creativity of the musical musculature of this group of unique musicians of their kind. Feeding Tube Records present a reissue of Michael Hurley's long-lost 1984 album, Blue Navigator. Recorded with a cast of Northern Vermont hepcats including guitarist Jon Weber (of Dan Hicks' original Hot Licks), head Rooster William Wright on guitar and mandolin, Nancy Beavan on vocals, Gordon Stone on pedal steel and various other goners. A great, very casual sounding session, revealing more layers the more you listen. For this reissue, Michael has written a set of illustrated liner notes. JENKINS, "An Overview On (BA DA BING) BING164 CD/ LP CASSANDRA Phenomenal Nature" February 19 street date. Ambient folk meets chamber pop by NYC artist who as played in the bands of Eleanor Friedberger, Craig Finn, and Lola Kirke. "An Overview on Phenomenal Nature" honours flux, detail, and moments of intimacy. Cassandra Jenkins arrived at engineer Josh Kaufman's studio with ideas rather than full songs - nevertheless, they finished the album in a week. Jenkins' voice floats amid sensuous chamber pop arrangements and raw edged drums, ferrying the listener through impressionistic portraits of friends and strangers. Her lyrics unfold magical worlds, introducing one to a cast of characters, like a local fisherman, a psychic at a birthday party, and a driving instructor of a spiritual bent. KID CONGO & THE "Swing From The Sean (IN THE RED) ITR359 LP PINK MONKEY BI DeLear EP" February 19 street date. "Swing From The Sean DeLear" is the new four song 12-inch by Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds on In The Red Records. It celebrates a dreamlike bridge between life and memory. Recorded and mixed with Jim Waters (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Sonic Youth, etc.) at Waterworks Recording in Tucson, the track "Sean DeLear" is a tribute to the late, magical, and ubiquitous Los Angeles underground institution named Sean DeLear. This rocking song uses the metaphor of those passed on as swinging from a chandelier, a festive image everyone hopes is true! Side two of this 12-inch is a fourteen-minute psych, Chicano groove titled "He Walked In". The text is based on a visceral fever dream Kid had about his friend and Gun Club bandmate Jeffrey Lee Pierce, who passed away in 1996. KIRBY, KATY "Cool Dry Place" (KEELED KS046 LP/ KIRBY, KATY "Cool Dry Place (coke (KEELED KS046LPC1 LP bottle clear vinyl)" February 19 street date. Katy Kirby is a Texas-based songwriter and indie rock practitioner with an affinity for unspoken rules, misunderstanding and boredom. She was born, raised and homeschooled by two ex-cheerleaders in small-town Texas and started singing in church, amidst the pasteurised-pop choruses of evangelical worship. Like many bible belt late-millennials, Katy grew up on a strict diet of this dependably uncool genre and accordingly, "Cool Dry Place" finds her dismantling it. Instead of eradicating the pop sensibilities of her past, she warps them, lacing sugary hooks with sneaky rage, twisting affectionate tones into matter-of-fact reproach, and planting seemingly serene melodies with sonic jabs. These emotional dioramas are moderated by the angular storytelling that unites Gillian Welch and Phoebe Bridgers, a favour for the conventions of short fiction over confession. Finally seeing the light of day here we have an unreleased album recorded in NYC in 1999 by this super band: Jerry Teel – vocals, guitar (The Chrome Cranks, Honeymoon Killers, Boss Hog, Big City Stompers…) Kid Congo Powers – vocals, guitar (The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Butcher Shop…) Jack Martin – guitar (Five Dollar Priest…) Barry London – organ, piano, harp Bob Bert – drums (The Chrome Cranks, Five Dollar Priest, Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunch…) Recorded at legendary NY studio Funhouse, these recordings have remained unheard so far (except the Tom Waits cover) and some of the tracks were afterwards rerecorded for their last album. But here we have the original album as it was conceived with their pristine swamp, country, blues and New York sound. "TRGTR" is the new album by critically acclaimed guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Fernando Perdomo of Dave Kerzner Band, The New Empire, and Jakob Dylan's Echo in the Canyon band. "TRGTR" is the first all instrumental tribute album to the music of Todd Rundgren. This is Fernando's second all instrumental tribute album following 2019's critically acclaimed "The Crimson Guitar" tribute to King Crimson. The 16 songs represent every era of Todd's 50 plus year career from The Nazz to a song off his forthcoming album "Space Force". Almost a decade on from their 2011 debut, "Funny Looking Angels", they have emerged with "Only Smith & Burrows Is Good Enough". The album is a collaborative writing experience and the pair share vocal duties across its tracks from the propulsive power-pop of "All The Best Moves" to the calypso-tinged virtuosity of "Buccaneer Rum Jum" and the engaging traces of OMD amidst "Bottle Tops." "Settlement" is the latest album recorded by Strawbs, more than 50 years on from the band's first major label release. The album comes at a time of political and social upheaval, which the lyrics and melodies of the songs reflect. The album is produced by Blue Weaver, who played with Strawbs and Bee Gees in their 1970s heydays. The recording was coordinated from Blue's studio in Germany, where he now lives. Strawbs are David Cousins, Dave Lambert, Chas Cronk, Tony Fernandez and Dave Bainbridge. Special guests on the album are John Ford, another former member of Strawbs, Cathryn Craig, with her lovely voice and unmistakable Southern lilt, and bass player Schalk Joubert. Robert Schroeder was one of Klaus Schulze's first disciples to record on the master's own Innovative Communications label, and "Harmonic Ascendant" remains one of the two or three best albums I.C. ever released. Not content however to be merely a copyist, Schroeder forged his own identity as a composer of romantic, richly-textured electronic music that owed as much to Chopin as it did to Schulze. The architectonic structure of the individual movements that make up the title track is immaculately conceived as an accumulation of suites, moving from an acoustic guitar/ piano duet to a guitar/cello/string synthesizer trio, and so on. The entire piece almost resembles the work of a chamber ensemble, with Schroeder's wonderfully impressionistic acoustic guitar and synthesizers providing a velvety cushion for the solo cello of Wolfgang Tieopold. Schizophrenic at times, though thoroughly absorbing, "Harmonic Ascendant" possesses all the qualities of naivete and precocity that one would expect from a talented devotee of the innocent experimentation that the synthesizer often engenders. The mighty U Roy is the originator, the man who put the DJ phenomenon on the map and made it an artform. U Roy moved into the recording arena firstly cutting two discs for producer Lee Perry : Earths Rightful Ruler and OK Corral , and then following this with Dynamic Fashion Way and Riot for producer Keith Hudson . Producer Duke Reid , seeing the potential in this new found form, brought U Roy to his Treasure Isle Studios to voice over his back catalog of rocksteady hits. His first three releases for Duke Reid Wake the Town , Rule the Nation and Wear You to the Ball held the top three positions for 12 weeks in early 1970s. A bit away from what would have been his 92° birthday, the label presents a pseudo unreleased gem by the greatest all-time composer at the beginning of his career. In IVIC, his debut album, Saele Valese, distills hauntological noise, droning tonal experiments, and minimalist rhythms into a series of electro-acoustic-wave ventures written over five years.IVIC's 11 tracks were mixed and recorded live on DAT cassettes and through DAW experimentation, without the possibility to revise the final recordings. The music possesses a dilated, shuffling rhythmic base, and still moments of gloomy sonics alternating with more ravenous upheavals of power electronics.

BYRDS "Live In Amsterdam" (1960'S RANDB68LP LP February 12 street date. The version of the Byrds that played Amsterdam's prestigious Concertgebouw in July 1970 was very different to previous incarnations. The Skip Battin/Gene Parsons rhythm section was tight and allowed the guitars of Roger McGunn and Clarence White room to roam, most noticeably on an extended "Eight Miles High". Thoroughly road-hardened, the band played material from throughout their entire career and threw in some previously unreleased cover versions as well. Radio VPRO broadcast the gig. The twelve tracks presented here have been chosen to complement the live portion of the "Untitled" LP. Full credits and sleeve notes are provided. FACES "BBC1 Live 1970" (1960'S RANDB71LP LP February 12 street date. The early years of The Faces were characterised by uproarious onstage performances and two disappointing studio albums that failed to capture their onstage excitement. We are fortunate that they were regular visitors to the BBC where their regular appearances on TV and radio proved just how good they were. The tracks here are taken from three high quality 1970 radio broadcasts. Nine tracks give the flavour of a Faces gig - just loose enough to be exciting and versatile enough to include Northern Soul, R&B, acoustic folk songs and a Bob Dylan cover. Full credits and sleeve notes included. FLEETWOOD MAC "BBC Sunday Concert (1960'S RANDB69LP LP April 9th 1970" February 12 street date. Listening to these nine tracks, it is hard to believe that this version of Fleetwood Mac had only a few weeks left to run. An acid-damaged Peter Green would leave six weeks after this gig and they would never sound this good again. This high quality BBC recording includes contemporary hits such as "The Green Manalishi" and "Rattlesnake Shake" as well as album tracks featuring the melodic skills of Danny Kirwan and some unreleased rockers from Jeremy Spencer. Full sleeve notes and credits included. GENESIS "The Lost Radio (MIW) MIW007 LP Recordings (2LP)" February 19 street date. Formed by ex-Charterhouse pupils Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel and Anthony Phillips, Genesis were named by fellow former pupil, the now shamed music impresario and former television presenter, Jonathan King, who arranged for them to record several unsuccessful singles and their debut album "From Genesis to Revelation" in 1968. After splitting with King, the group began to tour professionally, signed with Charisma Records and recorded "Trespass" (1970) in the progressive rock style, as well as a spectacular radio session for the BBC's Nightride programme. Following the departure of Phillips, Genesis recruited Phil Collins and Steve Hackett and recorded "Nursery Cryme" (1971). It was this classic line-up that recorded a number of further sessions for Radio One's Sounds Of The Seventies show in 1971 and 1972. This record features the full live recordings made for radio broadcast, when Genesis were at their early, but already hugely original and musically brilliant finest. METALLICA "Seattle '89 Vol. 2 (2LP)" (DETONATE) DET003 LP METALLICA "Seattle '89 Vol. 2 (2LP- (DETONATE) DET003LTD LP red vinyl)" February 12 street date. Part two now available! Metallica's 1988 album "And Justice For All" still remains the band's biggest-seller. Having to date shifted eight million copies in the U.S. alone, the record also earned the thrash metal heroes their debut Grammy award. To capitalise on the LP's success, in the wake of its release the band embarked on the mammoth Damaged Justice tour, playing a staggering 219 shows across five continents from 11th September 1988 to 8th October 1989. Many of the performances given during this jaunt remain among the finest Metallica shows ever performed. Notably, their appearance at The Seattle Center Coliseum on 30th August 1989, a show recorded for live FM broadcast across the U.S., is now available in exceptional audio quality on this two instalment vinyl set. YOUNG, NEIL & "Santa Monica Civic (1960'S RANDB70LP LP CRAZY HORSE 1970" February 19 street date. The power and ferocity of the original Crazy Horse was only hinted at by their studio recordings. They really came into their own on stage, as shown by the six electric tracks on this fine new release. Originally an FM broadcast from Radio KUSC, this recording is prized by Neil Young fans as it also includes his six-song acoustic set, comprising early solo material and songs written for Buffalo Springfield. The 1970 tour remains an artistic high spot in Neil Young's long and varied career and this release shows why. Full credits and sleeve notes included.
