flOw For Playstation 3

flOw has been labeled under many categories, but I don’t think any of those labels really fits. The basic idea of flOw has you controlling a sub-microscopic looking creature, collecting items and growing longer flagellum in the process. Along the way, you will come across other creatures that you will absorb, get distracted by, or interacted with in some way. To control your creature, you simply tilt the Sixaxis controller in various directions. Gameplay wise, you could compare it to Pac-Man, Geometry Wars, or maybe even some kind of interactive screen saver, but you would only be partially right. In flOw, the visuals feature simple colors and soothing yet fulfilling music that seems to suit the game perfectly. While most on-screen characters seem simplistic in design, when in motion they move more gracefully than anything you have ever seen in a game, and as you progress the colors will draw you in just as much as the characters you are controlling. There is no real way to describe flow, as you have no scoring system, now heads-up-display, and no real way to end the game-it really is something you have to play and experience yourself to form an opinion about. Some may hate it, as it may seem pointless, and some may love it for the same reason, but for the $7.99 you pay to download it from the Playstation network, it certainly won’t kill you to try it, so please do.

Final Round X Atlanta, Georgia www.finalround.org

On March 10th and 11th the event known as Final Round 10 will go down in Atlanta, Georgia. If you aren’t familiar with the event, Final Round is a competitive fighting game tournament held once a year in the ATL. Staying true to their arcade roots, the people behind Final Round run most of the games on authentic arcade style cabinets throughout the tournament. There are some exceptions, of course, but for the most part you will be getting authentic arcade-style gaming. The entry fee to the event is $20, and there will be a $10 Sign-up fee for each game you compete in. The list of games includes Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, and Guilty Gear XX: Slash, in addition to many other official and casual games to be played. For more info on this 2-day event go to the official website, or hit up the forums at SRK (www.shoryuken.com/forums) and look up “events” for an official registration thread. I’ll be there, of course, to cover the happenings and ultimately to lose at a bunch of games.

If you tend to- ward more exotic pizzas, try the “The Maui Waui” topped with hickory smoked Maui ham, pineapple, chopped green onions and provolone cheese. On “The Turn” you’ll find Caddy Shack’s pasta selections. For a lighter portioned but tasty treat, go for the Lobster Ravioli, topped with a creamy red pepper sauce. The meat of the menu is literally on “The Back Nine” with their selection of filet, top sirloin and T-bone steak, served up with their excellent smashed potatoes. Also filling out that section are the popular Nana’s Pot Roast, Country Fried Steak and various surf & turf combos. I sampled the Firecracker Shrimp & Scallops, two full skewers of grilled shrimp and bacon wrapped scallops doused in their sweet and lightly spicy firecracker sauce. They were served on a bed of their smashed potatoes, which was the wrong thing to pair with the dish. While it did make for a decent presentation, the potatoes tended to stick to the seafood on the skewers and wasn’t an inspired pairing for the flavor of the dish. A wild or yellow rice would have complemented the skewers, the side of spinach and the very intense flavor of the sauce far more satisfactorily. The skewers themselves were very tasty, with tender shrimps and scallops grilled to perfection. Under “Caddy Favorites” we went straight for the big one: “The Double Bo- gey Cheeseburger.” This excellent double food & golf decker cheese burger is ¾ of a pound of quality ground beef with your choice of cheddar, jack, American or Swiss cheese. It is massive. Those who order it should either have a very wide mouth or the snake-like ability to dislocate their jaw. With this burger on your plate, you won’t go away hungry, and you might go away with leftovers. Unfortunately, as in the case of the Firecracker Shrimp, it seemed that all of the effort Murray Bros. Caddy Shack went into the main course of the dish, with little thought to the sides. In the case of the shrimp, the smashed potatoes would have been stellar for a steak dish, but didn’t pair well with the seafood. Appetizers are under a section called “Tee It Up,” and feature selections you can find at most sports bars, like chicken wings, chili cheese fries, onion rings and other selections. I highly recommend the onion rings, which are made from fresh sliced sweet white onion dipped in a light Southern batter and then deep fried to golden perfection. They’re served with a sweet tangy barbeque, but are just as savory alone. The nachos are an impressive mountain of flavors, with notes of heat throughout. I particularly liked the South of the Border refried beans, which popped with flavor and were just different enough from the standard stuff that comes on nachos to make it noteworthy. Next on the menu are “The Greens,” the five stand alone salad selections on the menu. Many of the se- lections have kitschy names keeping with the Caddy Shack/golfing theme. 20 march 1-7, 2007 | entertaining u newspaper inside golf by Erin thursby [email protected] If you’re looking to improve your swing or just to have a good time golfing without working up a sweat on the course, head out to Inside Golf at their new San Marco location. Just three weeks ago, Inside Golf moved from their location above Boomtown off of Hemming Plaza to the other side of the St. John’s in San Marco. Owner Mary O’Donnell told EU that the move has improved business because Inside Golf is far more visible and accessible. “We weren’t getting the traffic that we needed and it didn’t look like there was going to be anything to change that in the future.” In the old building they were the only non-restaurant tenant and they tended to have different hours than the businesses around them. Another factor that’s bringing more people into the San Marco locale are the die-hard habits of golfers. “Golfers,” says O’Donnell “are used to putting their clubs in a car and driving to a range or course and taking the clubs out of the trunk. Here, they can do that.” You can work on your putts or your drive at Inside Golf, using their computerized booths that ana- lyze your swing. Without elements like wind to carry your ball, you can determine what you’re doing wrong and adjust your swing. “Every hit that you make, you get instant feedback…You can figure it out, even if you don’t know the mechanics.” O’Donnell and her staff are also happy to give golfers tips and tricks if they want them. There are other virtual golfing booths in town, but all of them are used, not for entertainment and improving the game, but for finding the right golf club at the pro golf shops in town. Inside Golf is the only place in town that uses the booths to promote golf and entertain. The store gets many different types of business, from 8-year old golf savants to golfing leagues and corporate team building. It’s a great place to have a party, even if you aren’t an avid golfer. The 10ft by 10ft screens in the golfing booths can be used to project various forms of entertainment. They’ll be showing the ACC Basketball Finals pretty soon and other big games. If you bring any sort of DVD disk to your party, it can be projected on the screens. Classic sports games or bloopers are a favorite, though they can show any type of DVD that you might like. Next Thursday they’ll be holding a Texas Hold-‘Em poker game, with golfing products as prizes. They serve beer, wine, soft drinks and other commonly available drinks. They also have pre-pack- aged snacks (such as what you might find in a vending machine) but they keep menus from local eater- ies like Bistro Aix, Tidbits, European Street on site for delivery, pick-up and catering. Inside Golf is now located at 1515 San Marco Blvd. near Cedar Street. There are 56 virtual courses which are modeled after real courses. You can use your own clubs and balls or they will provide you with theirs for free. Four play for the price of 3 and a single player gets their second nine holes for free. Hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10AM to 8PM and Saturday-Sunday from 1PM to 6PM. Call (904) 346-0317 for additional info.

eujacksonville.com | march 1-7, 2007 21 outrageous duds for a quiet game golfing attire by Erin thursby [email protected]

Women get the opportunity to express themselves with clothing on a regular basis, but it just isn’t socially acceptable for men to be flamboyant in most instances. The exception to the rule is the golf course, where real men DO wear pink and plaid and paisley—sometimes in the same outfit. Although golf as we know it started around 1800, outrageous golf fashion took hold in America in the 1920s with knickers and newsboy hats. By the 1950s more and more bright colors and fabrics became available to the public, and golfing attire became more outlandish and colorful. The ‘60s were an outrageous time for fashion anyway, and golf course fashion was no exception. The ‘70s and ‘80s saw plenty of pinks, salmons and greens on the course. Today’s Look

Tiger Woods, as today’s most well-known and popular golfer, has tremendous influence over golfing fashion and fashion in general. He’s best known for his leather belts with their simple silver buckle. Belts have become an important part of golfing attire since the mid ‘90s, so much so that some fashion forward golfers started wearing belts worthy of the rodeo. Unfortunately, Tiger is rather staid when it comes to his other fashion choices, wearing mainly Nike brand baseball caps, subdued colors and conservative collared shirts. Despite this trend toward conservative dress on the golf course, it’s still the place to express an outrageous sense of fashion. Legends in Golf Fashion Past and Present

Greg Norman The legendary Sam Snead (1912-2002) was known as much for his incredible golfing (he won a record 82 PGA tourneys) as he was for his cultivated down home manner and hayseed sense of style. He was known for playing barefoot and donning a straw hat. Chi Chi Rodríguez is known for his flamboyant victory dance, wherein he would pretend that his golf club was a sword in toreador fashion. Before he developed this signature move, he used to place his distinctive straw hat over the hole when- ever he made a birdie or an eagle, but dropped the move when other golfers complained. Australian golfer Greg Norman, the top ranking golfer in the 1980s and ‘90s became known for his wide-brimmed straw hat. Nicknamed the “The Great White Shark,” he wore the wide straw hat typical of Australian surfers as well as an Aussie style cowboy hat made especially for him in straw. He has his own golf clothing line Jesper Bo Parnevik, who will be playing the Wachovia Tour this year, is credited with an eclectic sense of golf fashion and for introducing Tiger Woods to his wife Elin Nordegren. An upturned bill on his baseball cap used to be his trademark (the Ryder Cup accommodated this quirk by placing their logo on the inside of the bill rather than the front, so it could be seen). As of last year, he’s taken to wearing small ties under vests and various styles of hats.

plus-Fours are loosely cut slacks cut four inches below the knee. They were introduced into golfing culture by Edward, Prince of Wales, during a trip to the states in 1924. The knicker-like pants were brought back into more recent popularity by Payne Stewart (1957-1999). Spectator shoes or wingtip shoes were also popularized by Edward VIII, then the Prince of Wales dur- ing his 1920’s visits. Edward tended to wear the more subdued tan and whites while sporting. Golfer Walter Hagen (1892 –1969) had a hand in popularizing the two-toned black-and-white wing tip by wearing them in the 1920s at the fashionable Lido Club on New York’s Long Island. Also a popular shoe among golfers is another type of oxford called the saddle shoe. They come in more than just black and white; any shoe that has a separate saddle shaped piece of leather (or whatever the shoe is made of) at the instep is considered a saddle shoe. They can either be duotone or all the same color. Straw hats of any type are a great for hot courses, as well as any baseball cap which allows the head to breathe or a visor to keep the glare at bay. Ivy Caps, also known as newsboy caps are a classic choice for windy or colder courses. If you like the look of a newsboy, but still want to play in heat, you can opt for one of the newer styles available in mesh.

She has been a teacher before, at various grade levels, but she says she has no patience for children (although her grandchildren would disagree). In the 60s one of her poems was published in Time magazine and she has released several books of her poetry since. At the Joe Berg Seminars at which she is often a keynote speaker, she is billed as “The Trucker Poet” because she spent some years of her life traveling and writing poetry.
