Although we do not have published tension values on our website, we are happy to assist you with any technical questions that you may have. In some cases, published string tensions can be misleading or inaccurate depending on the situation. String tension is only one of many important factors that can go into determining the right strings for your instrument and will differ based on scale length and tuning. Furthermore, the perceived tension can be quite different than the theoretical tension as a string's flexibility and responsiveness can be affected by even more factors including string construction, instrument setup, and bridge type. We err on the side of not oversimplifying each string to a number, but we are glad to assist you with these sorts of technical inquiries based on your individual needs. Here at Ernie Ball we employ strict quality control standards and are committed to producing the highest quality musical instrument strings. Unfortunately there are many factors that can lead to a shorter string life. String attack, pick thickness, and finger oils are just a few factors that contribute to some players breaking more strings than others. Most strings break around the bridge. If this is happening repeatedly, you might need to replace the saddles. When the string is tightened, the saddle is the point at which the string makes the most contact and has the most tension, therefore needs special attention. -

MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies. -

Operetta after the Habsburg Empire by Ulrike Petersen A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Richard Taruskin, Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Elaine Tennant Spring 2013 © 2013 Ulrike Petersen All Rights Reserved Abstract Operetta after the Habsburg Empire by Ulrike Petersen Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Richard Taruskin, Chair This thesis discusses the political, social, and cultural impact of operetta in Vienna after the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. My stories evolve around the following works: Der Millionenonkel (1913), Austria’s first feature‐length motion picture, a collage of the most successful stage roles of a celebrated -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Highly Anticipated “Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll” Exhibit Arrives at Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Special Guest Inductees from Metallica, The Eagles, and Heart Open Exhibit The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s much-anticipated exhibit, “Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll” celebrating iconic musical instruments that gave rock & roll its signature sound arrives at the Museum following a blockbuster stint at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The exhibit runs through December 2020. Co-organized with The Met, the exhibit offers a rare, in-depth look at the artists and instruments that made possible many of the songs we know and love. This is the only time these iconic instruments will be seen together in one massive collection. The exhibit opened in November 2019 with a special event featuring several Inductees whose iconic instruments are part of the exhibit, including Don Felder formerly of The Eagles, Nancy Wilson of Heart, and Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo of Metallica. “Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll” is the largest single exhibit ever at the Rock Hall and takes over four floors. Instruments showcased span from 1939 to today and many have never been displayed outside of their original concert performance settings.
