Among the bigger names we are delighted to welcome (or welcome back) this season, the hottest selling ticket is likely to be Northern Ballet Theatre’s Tortoise and the Hare. I saw the public premiere of this last October and it was the most enjoyable children’s ballet the company has produced. The mighty Snake Davis also returns with a new show, his Classic Sax Solos with a stunning set list of sax classics. For theatre fans, we have the only Yorkshire date for Big Telly’s stage adaptation of Spike Milligan’s hilarious book Puckoon, and are also trying our first presentation of live opera, from the Yorkshire based company, Radius. The season wraps up with a short festival devoted to guitar music, showcasing the amazing variety of music, genres and effects that can be drawn out of this versatile instrument when in expert hands. Welcome to the March edition of Slap. I was hoping to say ‘Spring is in the air’ but I’ve just seen the weather forecast and it’s far from Spring-like. It really feels like it’s been a long winter of discontent with news of more venue closures almost weekly. The latest to go at the end of February was the Pig and Drum in Worcester which has been prominent on the local music seen for a few years now. Thanks to the efforts of landlady Rachel Cale bands from out of town loved playing there. NEW RELEASE for the week of January 8, 2021 PRIORITIES & HIGHLIGHTS >> Pre-Order Now! CLEAN "Mister Pop (re-issue 2009)” (MERGE) MRG325 LP January 29 street date. David Kilgour on "Mister Pop": ""Mister Pop" began in Brooklyn, NY, at Gary Olson's Marlborough Farms studio and was completed in the basement hall of First Church Dunedin. There is more synthesizer on this album than the others, mainly an old Juno synth. I do remember having a bath in Brooklyn while Robert was downstairs singing and writing. I thought he was singing "he's a factory man", so I dried off and went down and wrote "Factory Man" while thinking heavily of The Kinks". Robert Scott on "Mister Pop": "I remember thinking at the start of the NY sessions with Gary Olson, "is this the start of a new album?". We were coming up with quite a bit of new stuff, and of course, Gary is great to work with. We carried on at Burlington St in Dunedin with (engineer and Heavy 8) Tex Houston at the controls, good fun from what I remember, lots of mucking around with keyboards and synths. We were going for that Krautrock groove and we sure got it on "Tensile", one of my faves along with the pure pop of "Dreamlife". CLEAN "Unknown Country (re-issue 1996)” (MERGE) MRG739 LP January 29 street date. David Kilgour on "Unknown Country": "The Clean always wanna try something different, but on this LP, we were obsessed with the idea. I remember we generally left vocal ideas to last, after the tracks were recorded, so we never really knew where we were headed.

  • From Prog-Folk-Rock Legends the Strawbs on New “Best Of” Collection
1 SING-ALONG TO “PART OF THE UNION” FROM PROG-FOLK-ROCK LEGENDS THE STRAWBS ON NEW “BEST OF” COLLECTION Once upon a time in the ‘70s, British folk music melded with British rock. From Jethro Tull, Renaissance and Genesis to Fairport Convention and the Strawbs--perhaps the most adventurous of them all--U.K. bands brought their roots to rock. The Best Of Strawbs edition of 20th Century Masters/The Millennium Collection (A&M/UME), released February 25, 2003, pays tribute to a prog-folk-rock outfit exemplified by once playing an electric dulcimer through a fuzzbox. Featuring 10 selections digitally remastered from the original master tapes, The Best Of Strawbs spans four of their nine A&M albums and includes their best-known recordings, “Part Of The Union” and “Lay Down.” In 1968, the Strawbs became A&M Records’ first U.K. signing. But it was not until their fifth album, 1972’s Grave New World, that the band, which earlier included the likes of Sandy Denny and Rick Wakeman, broke through in the U.S. With singer-guitarists Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper, keyboardist Blue Weaver, bassist John Ford and drummer Richard Hudson, Grave New World, produced by Bowie/T. Rex collaborator Tony Visconti, became their first U.S. charter and narrowly missed the British Top 10. The Best Of Strawbs culls the album’s “Benedictus,” the track with the aforementioned unique instrumentation. 1973’s Bursting At The Seams, the Strawbs’ first self- produced effort, saw the group move into more overtly rocking territory as co-founder Hooper was replaced by the more aggressive Dave Lambert.
