Welcome to the March edition of Slap. I was hoping to say ‘Spring is in the air’ but I’ve just seen the weather forecast and it’s far from Spring-like. It really feels like it’s been a long winter of discontent with news of more venue closures almost weekly. The latest to go at the end of February was the Pig and Drum in Worcester which has been prominent on the local music seen for a few years now. Thanks to the efforts of landlady Rachel Cale bands from out of town loved playing there. We don’t yet know the long term fate of the Boar’s Mar 2017 Head in Kidderminster since Sid & Sandra announced they’re moving on in the summer, But I don’t think it’ll be the last to go. With business rates rises due very soon and so many people feeling the pinch, these places are really suffering. There are SLAP MAGAZINE rumours of other venues around the counties who may also be Unit 3a, Lowesmoor Wharf, shutting their doors soon. And It’s not just the music scene that Worcester WR1 2RS suffers either, many of these spaces are now multi functional art Telephone: 01905 26660 spaces as well as platforms for comedy, spoken word and poetry. -

All rights reserved. www.adambomb.com Research and design: Gernotte Frickenberger ADAM BOMB The History 3 Chapter 1 Biography Chapter 1 1963 Adam was born as Adam Brenner in Seattle, Washington USA. Adam formed the cover band TYRANT with singer GEOFF TATE who later formed QUEENSRŸCHE . First the band was called Spectrum and they 1979 played Judas Priest, UFO or Rush songs. Normally, they had gigs at High Schools. After a ‘battle of bands’ the band broke up. One of the first gigs Adam met EDWARD VAN HALEN in a hotel in Tacoma Washington. He asked Eddie to sign his guitar and wound up getting a three hour guitar lesson. Those three hours changed his life forever. Later he joined the band TKO from Seattle. Adam co-wrote 1980 most of the new material of the band and recorded the album IN YOUR FACE . But TKO couldn’t get a record deal. The album was too heavy for the current music market, Disco was still the main thing. Without a deal, Adam eventually left and was re- placed. TKO ended up with a record deal releasing In Your Face on Combat Records in 1984. Reissue 2008 with Adam on back cover Adam was asked to audition for KISS . Ace Frehley, the original guitar player, left the band before. -
Nick Drake and the Baroque Characteristics of His Music Mckendrick Bearden
Nick Drake and the Baroque Characteristics of His Music McKendrick Bearden This paper was written for Dr. Callaway’s Music History course. Born in the British Colony of Burma in 1948 and brought up in the English countryside of Warwickshire, Nick Drake has become one of the most influential and celebrated folk artists of the twentieth century. Strangely enough, the popularity his music enjoys now was not gained until thirty years after his death in 1974. In his music we find the use of extremely unusual guitar tunings, pastoral and simplistic lyrics, beautiful melodies, and an extraordinary high emotional level that has evoked responses from many who have written about his work. He is now known as one of the most important folk singer/ songwriters to have ever lived, though much of his music sets him apart from the contemporary folk artists the 20th century. Nick Drake has influenced countless musicians and songwriters since his early passing, and the reason for his influence may well lie in the characteristics and influences of his songs that make them so different from other folk artists of era. Trevor Dann discusses his influences as “avant-garde jazz, classical music, especially choral music, what we’d now call ‘world music’, and the blues” (p.13). Many articles and reviews describe his music as having a baroque quality or influence. Whether it is referring to the string arrangements in several of his songs or the sweeping orchestral quality of his guitar, most commentators never fail to observe a Baroque tinge. Nick Drake’s first album Five Leaves Left introduced listeners to his ornate guitar accompaniments and baroque orchestrations that are now synonymous with his work. -

KISMIF focuses on cultural practices that are used to face more massive and uniform forms of cultural production/creation/mediation, by activating an anti- hegemonic ethos centered around the aesthetics and policies of the daily ‘arts of doing’. KISMIF is, so far, the only congress in the world that analyzes the theory and practice of underground scenes and DIY cultures as increasingly significant cultural forms in a global context of precariousness and uncertainty. The KISMIF Conference has a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective, open for contributions from the global community of researchers, artists and activists who work on all aspects of underground scenes and DIY cultures and conduct their research within a plural methodological approach.
