Khaldoun Al-Shamaa 3 ABSTRACT This thesis aims to provide the interested reader with a critical account of far-reaching changes in modem Arabic literary theory, approximately since the 1970s, in the light of an ascending paradigm in motion , and of the tendency by subsequent critics and commentators to view litefary criticism in terms of self-a elaborating category morphing into cultural critique. The first part focuses on interdisciplinary problems confronting Arab critics in their attempt “to modernize but not to westernize”, and also provides a comparative treatment of the terms, concepts and definitions used in the context of an ever-growing Arabic literary canon, along with consideration of how these relate to European modernist thought and of the controversies surrounding them among Arab critics. -

9 Chapter One Modern Arabic Literature: A Historical, Political and Cultural Background This chapter attempts to explore the historical, political and socio-cultural changes that brought about significant developments in Arabic literature. The period (from mid-nineteenth century till the end of the World War I) witnessed profound changes in the very concept of literature. The renaissance (al-Nahdah), which was the basis of the spurt in Arabic literature, was in fact a product of fruitful meeting of two forces: the indigenous tradition and the imported Western forms. Moreover, Mohammed Ali’s drive for modernisation in Egypt early in the nineteenth century initiated a process of Westernisation which gathered momentum, eventually spreading from Egypt and Syria to the rest of the Arab World, aided by the disintegration of Ottoman Empire. More importantly, the spread of secular education and the birth of printing and journalism were potent factors not only of modern Arabic literature but also of modern Arabic thought, society, and politics. A significant translation movement resulted in the borrowing of Western ideas as well as of literary forms: the drama, the novel, and the short story. Against this background, the traditional concept of literature as a display of verbal skill was replaced by the view that literature should reflect and indeed change the social and political reality. 1.1 Important Historical Events Geography and history combine to make the Arabic speaking world one of the most fascinating areas of the globe. Generally, it was the influence of Islam that was responsible for the meteoric rise of the Arabs starting in the seventh century. -

HUMANITIES INSTITUTE ARABIC LITERATURE – 20th Century Devin J Stewart, Ph.D. Modern Arabic Drama : Tawfiq al-Hakim French and Italian influence. Modern Arabic drama has from the beginning been heavily shaped by the influence of the French theater and Italian opera. In all of pre-modern Arabic literature, only a handful of dramatic texts can be identified, such as the shadow plays of Shams al-Din Muhammad Ibn Daniyal (d. 1311). The pioneer of modern Arab drama was the wealthy Lebanese Christian merchant Marun al-Naqqash (1817-1855), who had traveled to Italy and fallen in love with opera and the theater. In 1850, he staged a play titled al- Bakhil (The Miser), an adaptation of Molière’s L’Avare, in his house in Beirut. His nephew Salim (d. 1884), continued his work, creating a theater company and traveling to Egypt, where Syrian Christians were entering journalism and other fields and had a profound impact on the development of the modern Egyptian theater. Jacob Sannu` (1839-1912), and Egyptian Jew, also drew on his experience with the theater in Italy to write a dozen plays which he staged for the Khedive Ismail (1863-1879) in 1870-72, including The Two Co-Wives, a satire of polygamy. Before Sannu` fell out of favor, the Khedive dubbed him “the Egyptian Molière”. The nineteenth-century witnessed the translation and adaptation of many more European plays, and Jurj Abyad (1880-1959) was sent by the Khedive to Paris to study acting. Between the two world wars, the Egyptian National Theater Troups was formed in 1935, and the prominent poet Ahmad Shawqi (1868-1932), tried his hand at drama, authoring plays in verse such as The Death of Cleopatra (1929), Majnun and Layla (1931), and The Andalusian Princess (1932). -

Osim Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy, University of Calabar Calabar Cross River State, Nigeria * [email protected] Abstract Literature is generally defined as anybody of written works. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary (1995) gives further explanations about literature as "writings having excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest". In this paper, therefore, the writer looks at the Arabic literature which gives one much insight into writings in Islam. The study uses a qualitative method of research where secondary sources from books and the internet were accessed and used in the work. The researcher finds out that the Quran is so influential in shaping literature in Arab nations and beyond. The writer also looks at classical Arabic literature such as: poetry, prose, fiction and non-fiction literature, where imaginary and factual stories about events and people are written. Nevertheless, the paper finds out that there was a decline of Arabic literature as a result of getting into contact with a variety of different people's cultures like Persia, among others who influenced directly or indirectly on Arabic culture. However, in the modem Arabic literature, there was a revival which is referred to in Arabic as “al-Nahda”, which means "the Renaissance". Today, the researcher in the work sees Arabic literature being accepted externally as there is an increase of translations of Arabic books into other languages, and Arabic authors begin to receive the commendation of their writings. -
