Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 4 8 1 0 6 - 1346 Abstract This work is concerned with Arabic poetry influenced by the Arab-Israeli conflict regarding Palestine from 1917 to 1973. Its main aim is to discuss how the subject of Palestine has, since 1917, been a source of inspiration to Arab poets, and to illuminate the various aspects of influence the conflict had on modern Arabic poetry. The thesis is divided, into two parts. Part, one consists of three chapters and deals with the poetry written up to 194-8. The conclusion reached in this part is that Arab poets1 concern about the'political situation of Palestine in the period between 1917 and 194-8 developed rapidly. Yet, aspects of influence of the conflict on poetry written during that period, are primarily limited to the level of introducing a number of themes as well as some new poetic vocabulary re­ lated to the subject. Part Two consists of four chapters and deals with the poetry written from 194-8 to 1973. The conclusion drawn from this part Is that the conflict, unlike the period preceding 194-8, has affected Arabic poetry in many ways with regard to mood, tone, attitudes and diction. He also adds that in our own century, with its "crowded records of wars international and civil, of social revolutions and awakening continents, poets can hardly be expected to. keep clear of politics in the general sense of contemporary public affairs". If these remarks apply, to some extent, to the poetry of many peoples, they are even more applicable to Arabic poetry throughout its history since the pre-Islamic period. Throughout this century, Arabs have been involved in the thorny problem of Palestine, This problem needless to stress, is one of the most difficult and stressful in the contemporary world; many people, from both East and West, are familiar with this question, and they often have strong opinions about it. Academic studies and scholarly works dealing with the many different aspects of the problem, the "Arab-Israeli conflict", as it is usually termed by Western writers, are numerous and readily available. Yet, as far as Arab lit­ erature is concerned, studies which discuss the representa­ tion of this conflict or its impact on Arabic literature are still far from sufficient. The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to provide a comprehensive perspective of Arab poets’ responses to 1 C. M. Bowra, Poetry .and Politics, p.l. the most serious, problem their nation as a whole has ever faced in its modern history* Poets -and this is still an accepted fact among the Arabs- are regarded as the "conscience of the nation". Their verses represent that inmost, authentic voice through which the emotions, feelings and^ aspirations of the nation are poignantly expressed. Our aim also is to draw attention to the various influences the political situation in Palestine have had on modern Arabic poetry. The thesis is divided into two parts. Part I deals with poetry written up to 1948, and comprises three chapters. Chapter I serves as a background to the first part, and outlines the Zionist threat against Palestine, as reflected in Arabic writing between 1897 and 1917. Chapter II discusses the major themes of poetry written on the subject by Palestinian poets, while chapter III ' discusses the themes and orientation of poetry written by non-Palestinian Arab poets. The conclusion reached in part one is that the attention drawn to Palestine by Arab poets grew rapidly during the period 1917-1948, especially after 1929. However, the influence of the political situation in Palestine on poetry written before 1948 is primarily limited to the introduction of a number of new themes, as well as to the adoption of new poetic vocabulary related to the subject. Part Two consists of four chapters and covers the poetry written between 1948 and 1973. Chapter IV gives 3 a general picture of the development of Arab literary concern on the Palestine issue. Chapter V deals with the "predominant themes generated by the loss'of Palestine to the Jews. Chapter VI discusses the employment of new poetic tools, such as symbols, myths and folk-elements, in poetry written on the subject of Palestine.

United States of America) Arkansas Model United Nations (AMUN) November 20-21, 2020 Teeter 1 Historical Context For years, there has been a consistent struggle between the State of Israel and the State of Palestine led by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). In 2018, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. embassy located in Tel Aviv would be moving to the city of Jerusalem.1 Palestine, angered by the embassy moving, filed a case with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2018.2 The history of this case, U.S. relations with Israel and Palestine, current events, and why the ICJ should side with the United States will be covered in this research paper. Israel and Palestine have an interesting relationship between war and competition. In 1948, Israel captured the west side of Jerusalem, and the Palestinians captured the east side during the Arab-Israeli War. Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948.     WEST BANK AND GAZA 2020 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Palestinian Authority basic law provides for an elected president and legislative council. There have been no national elections in the West Bank and Gaza since 2006. President Mahmoud Abbas has remained in office despite the expiration of his four-year term in 2009. The Palestinian Legislative Council has not functioned since 2007, and in 2018 the Palestinian Authority dissolved the Constitutional Court. In September 2019 and again in September, President Abbas called for the Palestinian Authority to organize elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council within six months, but elections had not taken place as of the end of the year. The Palestinian Authority head of government is Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh. President Abbas is also chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization and general commander of the Fatah movement. Six Palestinian Authority security forces agencies operate in parts of the West Bank. Several are under Palestinian Authority Ministry of Interior operational control and follow the prime minister’s guidance. The Palestinian Civil Police have primary responsibility for civil and community policing. The National Security Force conducts gendarmerie-style security operations in circumstances that exceed the capabilities of the civil police. The Military Intelligence Agency handles intelligence and criminal matters involving Palestinian Authority security forces personnel, including accusations of abuse and corruption. The General Intelligence Service is responsible for external intelligence gathering and operations. The Preventive Security Organization is responsible for internal intelligence gathering and investigations related to internal security cases, including political dissent. The Presidential Guard protects facilities and provides dignitary protection.

    Arab Media and Society (Issue 17, Winter 2013) Palestine’s Occupied Fourth Estate: An inside look at the work lives of Palestinian print journalists Miriam Berger Abstract While for decades local Palestinian media remained a marginalized and often purely politicized subject, in recent years a series of studies has more critically analyzed the causes and consequences of its seeming diversity but structural underdevelopment.1 However, despite these advances, the specific conditions facing Palestinian journalists in local print media have largely remained underreported. In this study, I address this research gap from a unique perspective: as viewed from the newsroom itself. I present the untold stories of the everyday work life of Palestinian journalists working at the three local Jerusalem- and Ramallah-based newspapers— al-Quds, al-Ayyam, and al-Hayat al-Jadida—from 1994 until January 2012. I discuss the difficult working conditions journalists face within these news organizations, and situate these experiences within the context of Israeli and Palestinian Authority policies and practices that have obstructed the political, economic, and social autonomy of the local press. I first provide a brief background on Palestinian print media, and then I focus on several key areas of concern for the journalists: Israeli and Palestinian violence, the economics of printing in Palestine, the phenomenon of self-censorship, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, and internal newspaper organization. This study covers the nearly two decades since the signing of the Oslo Peace Accords between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) which put in place the now stalled process of ending the Israeli military occupation of Palestine (used here to refer to the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip).

January 2021 P a g e | 4 KEY MESSAGES • The three studied cities are located in different areas of control: Tartous is under the existing Syrian authority, Azaz is within the “Euphrates Shield” areas controlled by Turkey and the armed “opposition” factions loyal to it, and most of Qamishli is under the authority of the “Syrian Democratic Forces” and the “Self-Administration” emanating from it. Each of these regions has its own characteristics in terms of the "political war economy". • After ten years of conflict, the political economy in Syria today differs significantly from its pre-conflict conditions due to specific mechanisms that resulted from the war, the actual division of the country, and unilateral measures (sanctions). • An economic and financial crisis had hit all regions of Syria in 2020, in line with the Lebanese crisis. This led to a significant collapse in the exchange rate of the Syrian pound and a significant increase in inflation. This crisis destabilized the networks of production and marketing of goods and services, within each area of control and between these areas, and then the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic exacerbated this deterioration. • This crisis affected the living conditions of the population. The monthly minimum survival expenditure basket (SMEB) defined by aid agencies for an individual amounted to 45 working days of salaries for an unskilled worker in Azaz, 37 days in Tartous and 22 days in Qamishli.

A dissertation presented By Sana Tannoury Karam ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University December 2017 2 This dissertation is an intellectual and cultural history of an invisible generation of leftists that were active in Lebanon, and more generally in the Levant, between the years 1920 and 1948. It chronicles the foundation and development of this intellectual milieu within the political Left, and how intellectuals interpreted leftist principles and struggled to maintain a fluid, ideologically non-rigid space, in which they incorporated an array of ideas and affinities, and formulated their own distinct worldviews. More broadly, this study is concerned with how intellectuals in the post-World War One period engaged with the political sphere and negotiated their presence within new structures of power. It explains the social, political, as well as personal contexts that prompted intellectuals embrace certain ideas. Using periodicals, personal papers, memoirs, and collections of primary material produced by this milieu, this dissertation argues that leftist intellectuals pushed to politicize the role and figure of the ‘intellectual’.
