Middle Eastern Studies is a vibrant and growing discipline in the United States and around the world. Students wishing to enter this rich and varied discipline can begin with a major in Arabic Studies at Williams. The major is designed to give students a foundation in the Arabic language and to provide the opportunity for the interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary study of the Arab, Islamic, and Middle Eastern arenas. The Major in Arabic Studies Students wishing to major in Arabic Studies must complete nine courses, including the following four courses: ARAB 101-102 Elementary Arabic ARAB 201 Intermediate Arabic I ARAB 202 Intermediate Arabic II Students must also take five courses in Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies in affiliated departments. La literatura y la cultura árabe son poco conocidas en nuestro entorno, tal vez debido a un concepto eurocéntrico, y aún decimonó nico. No solamente sucede esto con dicha literatura, sino también con otras grandes literaturas no occidentales. Este vacío ha llevado a un desconocimiento de la mentalidad árabe, que conduce hacia una comprensión excesivamente mediatizada de esta cultura. Mucho de nuestra imagen sobre el árabe y el Islam descansa sobre la base de prejuicios alentados por medios de comunicación poco objetivos e intereses cuestionables. La cultura árabe no está tan alejada de la nuestra, a pesar de la primera impresión. Basta leer algunos pasajes de las crónicas de viajes (Rihlat) de autores como Husein Munis, para encontrar un formidable parecido cultural entre el hombre andaluz y el hombre árabe, y por extensión, en mi opinión, con el hombre latinoamericano. Acercarnos a esta literatura, es aproximarnos a su concepción del mundo, a la interpretación subjetiva que hace el árabe de su entorno «objetivo», es familiarizarnos cómo siente el individuo cada uno de los elementos de la realidad, sus costumbres y tradiciones. Podríamos 132 Letras 31 (1999) consultar sobre la cultura árabe en los textos de Jon Kimche, Roberto Marín (costarricense egresado de la Universidad de Amman en Jordania), Walter Z. Laqueur, Zidane Zeraowi, Ikram Antaki (mujer siria radicada en México), o la clásica obra de William Lanel . Estos autores han estudiado múltiples sectores de la actividad cultural, pero en mi opinión sólo la literatura pone espíritu a ese esqueleto al que dichos textos dan únicamente carne. -

His greatest work is the novel Robinson Crusoe. It is based on an actual event which took place during his time. Robinson Crusoe is considered to be one of the most popular novels in English language. He started a journal named The Review. His A Journal of the Plague Year deals with the Plague in London in 1665. Sir Richard Steele and Joseph Addison worked together for many years. Richard Steele started the periodicals The Tatler, The Spectator, The Guardian, The English Man, and The Reader. Joseph Addison contributed in these periodicals and wrote columns. The imaginary character of Sir Roger de Coverley was very popular during the eighteenth century. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) is one of the greatest satirists of English literature. His first noteworthy book was The Battle of the Books. A Tale of a Tub is a religious allegory like Bunyan‟s Pilgrim’s Progress. His longest and most famous work is Gulliver’s Travels. Another important work of Jonathan Swift is A Modest Proposal. -

C ,\,,: 41-------<..<.LI-hY,-""lA""""","""I,--ft-'t _ '" I) Abstract Mustafa Sadiq al-Rafii, a modem Egyptian writer with classical style, is not studied by scholars of Arabic literature as are his contemporary liberals, such as Taha Hussein. This thesis provides a historical background and a brief literary survey that helps contextualize al-Rafii, the period, and the area he came from. AI-Rafii played an important role in the two literary and intellectual schools during the Arabic literary revival, which extended from the French expedition (1798-1801) to around the middle of the twentieth century. These two schools, known as the Old and the New, vied to shape the literature and thought of Egypt and other Arab countries. The former, led by al-Rafii, promoted a return to classical Arabic styles and tried to strengthen the Islamic identity of Egypt. The latter called for cutting off Egypt from its Arabic history and rejected the dominance and continuity of classical Arabic language. AI-Rafii contributed to the Revival by supporting a line ofthought that has not been favored by pro-Westernization governments, which made his legacy almost forgotten. Deriving his literature from the canon of Arabic language, culture, and history, al-Rafii produced a literature based on a revived version of classical Arabic literature, an accomplishment which makes him unique among modem Arab writers. -

Hence came my study entitled "The Child in Contemporary Iraqi Poetry", which is an attempt to clarify the symbols of the word (the child) and what it indicates according to the context in which they are mentioned, as well as the statement of the aesthetic aspects of how to employ these symbols through the selection of poetic texts of modern poets in which the image of the child was mentioned Where this image was linked to the intellectual and political framework of the trends of Iraqi poets to create with it multiple connotations that were in harmony with the successive conflicts and revolutions that the poet employed to express intellectual, political and artistic positions. Modern Iraqi poetry by this expression means what many poets wrote in a non-traditional or traditional (classical) poetry curriculum in the literature of their languages. -

Al-Ahram Weekly, 12-18 August 1999, Issue No. 442 Points of reference, Ahmed Abdel-Moeti Hegazi I knew Abdel-Wahab Al-Bayyati for more than 40 years. And strangely, given the peripatetic nature of his life, we met for the first and last time in Cairo. I was 22 years old and he 31 when, in the winter of 1957, we met for the first time. The last time was earlier this year, when we both participated in a symposium held at the Cairo International Book Fair to celebrate 50 years since the emergence of free verse in Arabic. The last time I spoke to Al-Bayyati, though, was a few weeks ago, when I was in Paris, invited by the Institut du Monde Arabe to coordinate a festival of Arabic poetry scheduled for March next year. I suggested that a committee be formed bringing together people who might contribute to the success of such an event, and took it upon myself to contact Mahmoud Darwish, André Michael (the Arabic literature professor and head of the College de France), Gamaleddin Ben Sheikh and, of course, Al-Bayyati. We spoke over the telephone -- I in Paris, he in Damascus -- and he was full of energy as usual, and was as quick as ever to comment on the symposium in which we had both participated, and on the controversy that had ensued. Between our first and last meeting a great many miles have, of course, been covered. And for many of them we were fellow travellers, for I accompanied Al-Bayyati on many journeys, and visited him in many of the different places he would occupy -- the hotels and institutions, cafés and airports where he set up his temporary residence.
