Index Chart Market Wrap Up

● The Sensex and the Nifty ended with strong gains after hitting all-time highs. Sentiment was buoyed on the back of cooling trade tensions between the US and . Inflows from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) also supported gains.

● The BSE Sensex, rose 413.45 points or 1.01% to 41,352.17. The Nifty 50 index gained 111.05 points or 0.92% to 12,165.

● The BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.38% and the BSE Small-Cap index was up by 0.66%.

● Among the sectoral indices on the BSE, the Telecom index (up 3.28%), Metal index (up 3.02%) and the Teck index (up 1.87%) outperformed the S&P BSE Sensex. Meanwhile, the Consumer Durables index (down 0.68%), Healthcare index (down 0.19%) and the Realty index (down 0.18%) underperformed the S&P BSE Sensex.

Global News

● U.S. IHS Markit Flash composite PMI posted 52.2 in December, up from 52.0 in November. Manufacturing PMI ticked down to 52.5 in December's preliminary reading from 52.6 in November while the services PMI improved to 52.2 from 51.6.

● U.K. unemployment rate was largely unchanged at 3.8% in three months to October. The number of people claiming unemployment benefits increased by 28,800 from the previous month.

● Eurozone trade surplus increased to a seasonally adjusted EUR 24.5 billion in October from EUR 18.7 billion in September. On an unadjusted basis, trade surplus rose to EUR 28 billion from EUR 13.2 billion a year ago.

Economic News

● Crude Oil traded at US$ 60.28/ bbl (IST 17:00).

● INR strengthened to Rs. 70.97 from Rs. 71.00 against each US$ resulting in daily change of 0.04%.

● The toll collection across national highways has increased by nearly 15% since the government pushed mandatory use of FASTags for paying toll. Sources said the average daily NHAI toll revenue has crossed Rs 80 crore against earlier average of Rs 65-68 crore in July and August. The revenue may increase further as the share of toll collection through FASTags increase as it is expected to completely plug revenue leakage.

● The government has begun consultations with the country’s top 25 corporate houses and lenders, including the Tatas, Reliance, Birla, Mahindra, Adanis, and , to assess their investment plan and also try and resolve issues that they may be facing in their bid to expand operations.

● India’s banks are set for a $7.6 billion earnings windfall this month as the country’s bankruptcy court has made sudden progress in clearing a backlog of large cases.

● The Centre has sanctioned the release of Rs 2,228 crore as grant-in-aid against the pending GST arrears of the Punjab government since August 2019, said Chief Minister's Office, Punjab. The amount is aimed at compensating the Punjab government for the loss of revenue for the months of August and September 2019, on account of implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

● The government proposes to give online clearances to coal mining projects, an official statement said. The mine online application system for the entire mining plan approval process is proposed to be made online for application, processing and approval. This system will ultimately interact with PARIVESH portal of the environment ministry and similar portals of other related ministries and organisations of the central and state governments.
