The third birth—after his physical birth and the founding of the organization he is best known for, the Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê (PKK: Kurdistan Workers’ Party)—is his paradigm shift toward his concept of “democratic civilization.” This book, published to mark his seventieth birthday, in a certain way, tells the story of this third birth. The massive transformation that Kurdish society has undergone in the last forty years did not primarily happen through books. In a culture that relies heavily on oral literature, songs, conversation, and word of mouth, speeches and personal dialogue have been very important. Öcalan—although he authored several books in the 1970s and 1980s, and a total of more than sixty to date, twelve of them in prison—is mainly a man of the spoken word and of dialogue. This makes his prison condi- tions since 1999, the total isolation and absence of dialogue, all the harder. Dialogue became monologue, and his only way to communicate with an audience was to write court submissions, his so-called defenses or prison writings. In the face of a possible genocide, he did not formulate 1 Building Free liFe an individual defense but acted as a spokesperson for his people—and eventually for all the oppressed peoples of the Middle East. But, still, it is not fair to speak of a monologue. Abdullah Öcalan’s writings, first addressed to various courts in Turkey and Europe and subsequently published, did initiate a form of dialogue. The essays com- municate with storytellers from mythological pasts as well as with living intellectuals, with companions who know him personally and unknown readers on other continents, with supporters and opponents alike—even with his long deceased mother. His writings are being translated—some of them into as many as twenty languages—and are read and discussed by people all over the world. The International Initiative and many others have taken up this dia- logue and discussed his ideas with people/s who are also weaving and building a free life. In many countries and places, we tried to further the dialogue with and between the young, women, anarchists, libertarian socialists, social ecologists, autonomists, Indigenous peoples, workers, and all those whose hearts, minds, and praxis are dedicated to furthering the quest for a free life. This book is our attempt to reflect those discus- sions and dialogues and the process of learning from one another. This book for the first time collects written reactions to Abdullah Öcalan’s prison writings. It brings together a number of academics, writers, and revolutionaries who are interested in and inspired by his thought. Since it is going to appear in various languages, it is an attempt to deepen and broaden the existing dialogue. Hopefully it will also pierce through prison walls, since the severe isolation conditions in the İmralı Island prison allow for very little of that dialogue to get back to the author. As writing has become the means for Öcalan to overcome his isolation and communicate with a wider audience, we hope that this book will be a way for that very audience to reach back to him and contribute to his relentless and resilient effort to create a better world. The essays span a period of twenty years, and you will be able to trace a certain development. The topics discussed broaden in scope as they move away from the confines of nationalism and security-related issues toward more far-reaching ideas about the history of civilization and the struggle between capitalist modernity and democratic modernity as the current expression of a conflict that stretches back eons. What is constant throughout the essays is the excitement about Öcalan’s attempt at writing a holistic history of all the oppressed and 2 INTRODUCTION linking their different struggles to become free or remain free. New con- cepts arise, such as democratic modernity, democratic nation, democratic confederalism, and especially jineolojî as a form of knowledge that could bring about the transformation needed for our quest to build free life. The book is divided into four sections. Section I, “Introductions, Backgrounds, Postscripts,” consists mainly of writings that have been published as forewords or afterwords to translations of Öcalan’s books. Some of these writings are by people who, already in 1999, the year of Öcalan’s abduction, were familiar with his thinking and the Kurdish situ- ation, among them Norman Paech and the late Ekkehard Sauermann, or

They are characterized by different meanings, contexts, and history. Local names of geographical features (endonyms) may differ from the foreign names (exonyms) for the same feature. If a specific geographical name has been codi - fied or in any other way established by an authority of the area where this name is located, this name is a standardized geographical name. In order to establish solid common ground, geographical names have been coordinated at a global level by the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) since 1959. It is assisted by twenty-four regional linguistic/geographical divisions. Among these is the East Central and South-East Europe Division, with seventeen member states. The Chinese civilization has an essential and complex body. It is this feeling of civilizational grandeur that generates a conviction in Chinese greatness. Special emphasis is given to the new global strategy of China, as a doctrine of President Xi Jinping. This new strategy is especially highlighted through the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI) as the biggest project of the century and its 17+1 framework. The direct investment of China in countries around the world, appear as latent and hegemonic instruments for expansion of its political influence.     The 14th International Seminar on Sea Names Geography, Sea Names, and Undersea Feature Names Types of the International Standardization of Sea Names: Some Clues for the Name East Sea* Sungjae Choo (Associate Professor, Department of Geography, Kyung-Hee University Seoul 130-701, KOREA E-mail: [email protected]) Abstract : This study aims to categorize and analyze internationally standardized sea names based on their origins. Especially noting the cases of sea names using country names and dual naming of seas, it draws some implications for complementing logics for the name East Sea. Of the 110 names for 98 bodies of water listed in the book titled Limits of Oceans and Seas, the most prevalent cases are named after adjacent geographical features; followed by commemorative names after persons, directions, and characteristics of seas. These international practices of naming seas are contrary to Japan's argument for the principle of using the name of archipelago or peninsula. There are several cases of using a single name of country in naming a sea bordering more than two countries, with no serious disputes. This implies that a specific focus should be given to peculiar situation that the name East Sea contains, rather than the negative side of using single country name. In order to strengthen the logic for justifying dual naming, it is suggested, an appropriate reference should be made to the three newly adopted cases of dual names, in the respects of the history of the surrounding region and the names, people's perception, power structure of the relevant countries, and the process of the standardization of dual names.

    Peace and Beyond: Women’s Activist Alliances under Turkey’s “Regime of Emergency”1 Nisa Göksel University of Notre Dame The March 8 celebrations in Diyarbakır, the political and social center of Turkey’s Kurdistan region, usually witness the participation of a great number of women from various national and transnational groups.2 This was the case in 2013, when the Kurdish women’s movement played a leading role in organizing the event, inviting many feminist organizations, women’s groups, and independent feminists from Turkey, the Middle East, and Europe. On that day, the Kurdish women’s movement made “Peace” the dominant theme of the event in Diyarbakır, a reference to the upcoming “peace talks” between the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP), or the Justice and Development Party, and the Kurdish guerilla organization, Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan (PKK), or the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.3 Armed conflicts have been erupting between the Turkish army and the PKK since 1984. Following intense violence in the 1990s, “peace talks”—also referred to as the resolution process or the peace process—began in 2013.4 At the beginning of this process, Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdish movement, sent a letter to be read at the Newroz (spring equinox) celebrations in Diyarbakır, a highly political Kurdish platform.5 The letter hailed a new era, stating that “politics [now] gains prominence over weapons.” Following this, PKK guerrillas began to withdraw from the borders of Turkey. Although Turkey ultimately took no concrete steps in the name of a peace settlement, the peace talks marked a crucial turning point during which women built alliances around peace activism, and saw the flourishing of women’s solidarity networks including both Kurdish and non-Kurdish groups.

In the late 2010s – years of momentous advance for Kurdish forces in Turkey, Iraq, and Syria – Kurdish politics was deeply divided into competing movements pursuing irreconcilable projects for the future of the Kurdish nation. By investigating nationalism as embedded in social conflicts, this thesis identifies in the class basis of Kurdish movements and parties the main reason for their political differentiation and the development of competing national projects. After the defeat of the early Kurdish revolts in the 1920s and 1930s, Kurdish nationalism in Iraq and Turkey diverged along ideological lines due to the different social actors that led the respective national movements.

In this paper, the case of Roma/Gypsy/Traveller (RGT) women is discussed through the multiple discriminations they suffer from, the birth of feminism and gender activism in the communities, intersectional alliances with non-Gypsy feminists, and the anti-racist and LGBTIA-Queer movements.
