In Balinese this area is called "Bali-tengah", maning centra1 Bali. In a cultural sense, therefore, this area could almost be considered Bali proper. West Lombok, as part of Karangasem, see.ms nearer to this central area than the Eastern section of Jembrana. The narrow strip along the Northern shoreline is called "Den-bukit", over the mountains, similar to what "transmontane" mant tol the Romans. In iwlated pockets in the mwntainous districts dong the borders of North and South Bali live the Bali Aga, indigenous Balinese who are not "wong Majapahit", that is, descendants frcm the great East Javanece empire as a good Balinese claims to be.1 Together with the inhabitants of the island of Nusa Penida, the Bali Aga people constitute an older ethnic group. Aernoudt Lintgensz, rthe first Westemer to write on Bali, made some interesting observations on the dwellings which he visited in 1597. Yet in the abundance of publications that has since followed, domstic achitecture, i.e. the dwellings d Bali, is but slawly gaining the interest of scholars. Perhaps ,this is because domestic architecture is overshadowed by the exquisite ternples. -

Javanese Islamic Architecture: Adoption and Adaptation of Javanese and Hindu-Buddhist Cultures in Indonesia
Journal of Architecture and Urbanism ISSN 2029-7955 / eISSN 2029-7947 2021 Volume 45 Issue 1: 9–18 https://doi.org/10.3846/jau.2021.13709 JAVANESE ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE: ADOPTION AND ADAPTATION OF JAVANESE AND HINDU-BUDDHIST CULTURES IN INDONESIA Noor Cholis IDHAM * Universitas Islam Indonesia, Yogyakarta, Indonesia Received 22 October 2020; accepted 14 January 2021 Abstract. Javanese Islamic architecture appears to be highly influenced by previous cultures, even though Islam has brought a new civilisation since the 13th century in Indonesia. The classical mosques and houses seem to follow Javanese and Hindu-Buddhist principles in their buildings, elements and spatial arrangements. This paper examines how the Java- nese adapted their architecture to meet Islamic values while preserving their previous traditions. The concept of architec- tural synchronisation in Javanese architecture is examined from the traces observed in the temple dioramas, depictions of contemporary cultural products, and several traditional buildings. The adoptions and adaptations that appear in some significant objects such as old mosques and houses are traced back to previous transformation principles. Architectural harmonisation for new needs seemingly bases on religion as the most potent driving aspect. However, what is interesting is that in the case of Java, embracing a new religion does not mean forgetting existing traditions. On the other hand, the principle of acculturation has created a peaceful transition in architecture. Some evidence suggests that Javanese high cul- ture, such as the classical grand mosque and the joglo house, succeeded in translating Javanese and Hindu-Buddhist ideas into Islamic architecture in very distinctive ways. Keywords: Javanese architecture, Javanese mosque, Javanese house, Islamic architecture, architectural acculturation. -

Basuki Dwisusanto Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung, Indonesia Received: July 22, 2017 Accepted: October 29, 2017 ABSTRACT Classical Indonesian Architecture has variant of type architecture development. The phenomena shows the open of idea in contact with the other culture from the outside and the creativity process to produce a new form or a new identity. Local Genius in the context of local culture in Indonesia showed a creative community that allows generate new products. This paper will discuss the results of the architectural creativity on dynamic development of Indonesia classical architecture in Islamic Era, particularly in Java and they dialogue with the past. Moreover this phenomenon is also found in traditional Javanese architecture which is also associated with a form of sacred buildings. The emergence of Tiered roof Mosque can be ascertained is the result of a new creativity to building the mosque, as well as the emergence of forms Joglo in traditional Javanese architecture. In Indonesia, a form of classical architectural heritage is very dynamic so it is more difficult to be recognized as a persistent identity, every age and region has its own character. This uniqueness is indicated by the dialogical creativity of the ability to blend on elements from the outside with a preexisting (role of local genius) or between the new and the past.
