Here is your November edition - I trust that you will find items of interest (Ed - [email protected]) From the Chairman The Navy has been very quiet over the last while except for SAS SPIOENKOP and SAS MANTATISI sailing every now and then for some training. The Durban based OPVs (Strikecraft) have conducted patrols along the coastline, stopping over in Simon's Town for fuel and a bit of R&R. They have returned to their base in Durban. SAS AMATOLA is currently getting ready for Exercise OXIDE, which is a search and rescue exercise with the French based at Reunion. The exercise will be conducted in Durban. Talking of the French, their ship the FLOREAL sustained some damage in Durban from the storm recently and will remain in Durban for a while to effect repairs. We welcome new members and wish all those with upcoming birthdays a very special day and a great year ahead. Report from The Treasurer Financial results for September were, once again, most pleasing, with our sales target achieved and bottom line exceeded. Thanks for the great support! Our Club Manager has been particularly vigilant and has managed to keep costs down, especially controllable costs such as water, electricity and stationery / printing and we are indebted to him. The targets for October are a little more challenging, but we are confident that they will be achieved if the current support from members continues. The signs are already there.

    The Virtual Scylla: An Exploration of “Serious Games”, Artificial Life & Simulation Complexity1 Robert Stone David White Robert Guest Benjamin Francis Abstract This paper addresses the integration of artificial life simulations with interactive games-based technologies and describes how the results are being exploited not only for scientific visualisation and education, but also for fundamental research into simulation complexity, focusing on the behavioural representation of species in fragile or long-vanished landscapes and ecosystems. Earlier research is described that supported the development of a virtual recreation of a submerged Mesolithic river valley, discovered during petrochemical surveys of the Southern Basin of the North Sea. Using pollen sample records and vegetation predictions from previous studies, a new alife “engine” was developed that simulated the interaction between “artificialised” vegetation and environmental factors, thus helping researchers to postulate pre-glacial melting migratory and settlement patterns of ancient civilisations from continental Europe to the British Isles. More recently, and to take advantage of the existence of a more accessible and living ecosystem, work has been conducted in collaboration with the UK’s National Marine Aquarium, this time focusing on the Scylla Artificial Reef – a Royal Navy frigate scuttled off the coast of Cornwall in South West England.     Wellington City Council Quarterly Report January - March 2006 PDWCC54884 A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE A message from the Chief Executive Wellington City Council Quarterly Report – January to March 2006 Wellington City Council is continuing to invest in the city’s future as the January to March quarter shows. As part of this commitment, we want to ensure Wellington offers high quality sports and recreation facilities. In January construction began on the leisure pool and water play extension to the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre. This project will ensure that Wellington’s aquatic needs will continue to be met and will provide space for children and families. It will also free up existing space for sports and training and is expected to be operational by mid-2007. The Council is also committed to the redevelopment and refurbishment of Newtown Park and in February the resource consent application for the project was publicly notified. If consent is granted, work is expected to begin in September. Other key highlights for the third quarter included: • The Planning Group was awarded the Nancy Northcroft Planning Practice Award by the New Zealand Planning Institute.
