Svensson, and Peter John Taylor Abstract Scientific investigations on the mammals of Angola started over 150 years ago, but information remains scarce and scattered, with only one recent published account. Here we provide a synthesis of the mammals of Angola based on a thorough survey of primary and grey literature, as well as recent unpublished records. We present a short history of mammal research, and provide brief information on each species known to occur in the country. Particular attention is given to endemic and near endemic species. We also provide a zoogeographic outline and information on the conservation of Angolan mammals. We found confirmed records for 291 native species, most of which from the orders Rodentia (85), Chiroptera (73), Carnivora (39), and Cetartiodactyla (33). There is a large number of endemic and near endemic species, most of which are rodents or bats. The large diversity of species is favoured by the wide P. PO Box 386, Sundra 2200 On behalf of BCR (Bushveld Chrome (Pty) Ltd. 1 1 Introduction Habitat destruction and global climate change are impacting the earth on a major scale and monitoring such without studying the response of specific taxa to these changes is insufficient to understand the reaching effects of these factors on complex biological communities (Jones et al. 2009). Specific taxa that show a measurable response to climate change and habitat destruction are extremely important as bioindicators, particularly in an environment prior to the land being transformed (Jones et al. 2009). Bats have enormous potential as bioindicators since they are taxonomically stable, one can monitor trends in their populations, short and long-term effects on their populations can be measured, and they are distributed on a global scale making the effects of habitat change comparable on a global scale (Jones et al. 2009, Jones et al. 2003). In addition to climate change (extremes in drought, heat, cold and precipitation), agricultural intensification, disease, fatalities induced by wind turbines, overhunting (in some regions bats are important food items for humans) and the loss of habitats, human-introduced toxins present in an ecosystem influence bat populations. Occupying higher trophic levels, insectivorous bats are sensitive to toxin accumulations in ecosystems and are likely to show consequences of pollutants faster than lower trophic level organisms such as herbivorous insects and birds (Jones et al. 2009, Griffiths et al.

    NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia Bats and fruit bats at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve Ingrid Kaipf, Hartmut Rudolphi and Holger Meinig 206 BATS Highlights ´ This is the first time a systematic bat assessment has been conducted in the Kafa BR. ´ We recorded four fruit bat species, one of which is new for the Kafa BR but not for Ethiopia. ´ We recorded 29 bat species by capture or sound recording. Four bat species are new for the Kafa BR but occur in other parts of Ethiopia. ´ We recorded calls of a new species in the horseshoe bat family for Ethiopia via echolocation. This data needs to be confirmed by capture, because there is a chance it could be a species of Rhinolophus new to science. ´ We suggest two flagship species: the long-haired rousette for the bamboo forest and the hammer-headed fruit bat for the Alemgono Wetland and Gummi River. ´ The bamboo forests had the most bat activity at night, but the Gojeb Wetland had the highest species richness due to its highly diverse habitats. ´ All caves throughout the entire Kafa BR should be protected as bat roosts. ´ It will be necessary to develop an old tree management concept for the biosphere reserve to protect and increase tree roosts for bats. 207 NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia 1.     Project Update: February 2020 In February, 25th 2020, a trip to Kibali Gold Mining (herein - KGM) was planned to investigate the caves and also discuss with the management on ways to plan for long-term monitoring of bat population in the caves that are known to occur in this mining site. We had to be there from 27th February to 15 March. We arrived on site on 27th February and had the first meeting in the evening of the same day. Figure 1. We were given a local team with a car to work with because it is not allowed to use another car that that does not belong to KGM. They has mission to lead us where there are caves or other roosting sites that could be investigated. They should stay until late at night to make sure we have access to all roosting sites. Prospection was done during the day, and equipment left on site where mist netting should take place. But prior to everything, a meeting was planned with Vital Byabuze, the officer in charge of Environmental affairs of KGM. With Vital, we should discuss all issues related with our work. He had also to give us all the requirements of the company on the conduct on site during our stay. Activities: 1. The meeting with the management. 2. Discuss our objectives and the requirements of the company, and the conduct on site. 3. Field work. Meeting with the management: While we were planning to meet them in office at working time, the meeting took place informally.

    Newsletter of the Gauteng and Issue #69 April 2018 Northern Regions Bat Interest Group Editor: Trevor Morgan March 2017 & January 2018 By Julio Balona As a site for a bat outing I was slightly suspicious of Serendipity Trails because it is geared up for both nature and off-road enthusiasts, and I wondered if the two could co-exist. In my worst anxieties I envisioned a Mad Max movie: battalions of quad bikes, scramblers and 4x4s swarming all around us menacingly as we tried to remove desperate bats from our nets. It wasn’t even remotely so. The owner has been careful to separate the areas for either activity and it was all rather pleasant - I seldom heard or saw any kinds of noisy machines or people. Or perhaps when we visited there were simply not many off-roaders around… The first weekend in March 2017 we focused on the woodland and savannah area around the stream flowing along the length of the main camping area. The usual bushveld LBJs presented themselves: Cape serotines (Neoromicia capensis), Rusty pipistrelles (Pipistrellus rusticus) and Zulu serotines (Neoromicia zuluensis). And of course, several African yellow bats (Scotophilus dinganii). Plus, a single epauletted fruit bat (Epomophorus), probably E. wahlbergi but it was not possible to specify with any confidence because it was a juvenile. I could instead say nothing particularly interesting, but I prefer not to use such a phrase since even the common and widespread Cape serotine is interesting (just why is it so common and widespread?).

    457 ARTICLE Patterns of genome size diversity in bats (order Chiroptera)1 Jillian D.L. Smith, John W. Bickham, and T. Ryan Gregory Abstract: Despite being a group of particular interest in considering relationships between genome size and metabolic param- eters, bats have not been well studied from this perspective. This study presents new estimates for 121 “microbat” species from 12 families and complements a previous study on members of the family Pteropodidae (“megabats”). The results confirm that diversity in genome size in bats is very limited even compared with other mammals, varying approximately 2-fold from 1.63 pg in Lophostoma carrikeri to 3.17 pg in Rhinopoma hardwickii and averaging only 2.35 pg ± 0.02 SE (versus 3.5 pg overall for mammals). However, contrary to some other vertebrate groups, and perhaps owing to the narrow range observed, genome size correlations were not apparent with any chromosomal, physiological, flight-related, developmental, or ecological characteristics within the order Chiroptera. Genome size is positively correlated with measures of body size in bats, though the strength of the relation- ships differs between pteropodids (“megabats”) and nonpteropodids (“microbats”). Résumé : Bien qu’elles constituent un groupe présentant un intérêt particulier pour l’étude des relations entre la taille du génome et les paramètres métaboliques, les chauves-souris n’ont pas été bien étudiées sous cet angle. Dans ce travail, les auteurs présentent des estimés pour 121 espèces de “microchiroptères” appartenant a` 12 familles et ceci vient compléter une étude antérieure sur des membres de la famille des Pteropodidae (“mégachiroptères”).
