09 MAR 1996 DR MAHATHIR RETURNS FROM A THREE-DAY VISIT TO VIETNAM KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived home tonight from a three-day working visit to Vietnam at the invitation of the republic's prime minister Encik Vo Van Kiet. The Prime Minister had a tight schedule during the visit aimed at enhancing and strengthening two-way ties and extending the scope of cooperation between Malaysia and Vietnam. During his stay there, Dr Mahathir held discussions with Encik Vo Van Kiet and had meetings with the secretary general of the Vietnamese Communist Party Encik Do Muoi and the country's president Encik Le Duc Anh, besides visiting several Malaysian companies operating there and Vietnam-Malaysia joint ventures. The Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali, Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Sabbaruddin Chik, Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Dr Leo Micheal Toyad and Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Kerk Choo Ting were among about 30 members of the Malaysian delegation following Dr Mahathir. Foreign Minister Datuk Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his wife, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Chong Kah Kiat, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Megat Junid Megat Ayub, and Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Environment Datuk Abu Bakar Daud were among the dignitaries who were at the Bunga Raya VIP room of Lapangan Terbang Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, Subang, to welcome the Prime Minister and his delegation. -- BERNAMA SJA AO.

Turut dalam delegasi itu tiga Menteri Besar -- Tan Sri Wan Mokhtar Ahmad dari Terengganu, Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman (Johor) dan Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (Perlis) -- serta Ketua Menteri Melaka Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Abdul Ghani. Delegasi perniagaan dengan 81 anggota yang diketuai Pengerusi dan Ketua Eksekutif Penerbangan Malaysia Tan Sri Tajudin Ramli turut mengiringi Dr Mahathir ke kedua-dua negara. Lawatan Perdana Menteri ke kedua-dua negara itu sebagai memenuhi jemputan Presiden Kyrgyz Askar Akayev yang mengadakan lawatan rasmi ke negara ini pada Julai tahun lepas dan Presiden Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev yang melawat Malaysia pada Mei lepas. 13 MAY 1997 Abu Hassan-per capita ABU HASSAN: RIVER BASIN TO BE INCOME-BOOSTER KUALA SELANGOR, May 13 (Bernama) -- Development of the Sungai Selangor, Sungai Tinggi and Sungai Buloh basins under the Seventh Malaysia Plan (7MP) will increase the per capita income of the local people, Selangor Menteri Besar-designate Datuk Abu Hassan Omar said today. These areas had been identified as new areas for economic growth, he told reporters after a briefing by the Kuala Selangor District Officer Ishak Ahmad here. "Upon implementation of the economic programmes, it is projected that the average local man will enjoy a per capita income of RM9,358 at par with that of the state's," he said. Also present were State Executive Councillors Datin Paduka Rakibah Abdul Manap, Ch'ng Toh Eng and S.S. Rajagopal, State Secretary Datuk Hashim Meon, Speaker Datuk Onn ismail, Barisan Nasional candidate for Kuala Selangor parliamentary by-election Datuk Jamaluddin Adnan and heads of department. Ishak told Abu Hassan that development in the constituency would also focus on agriculture so as to strike a balanced development with emphasis on sufficient food production to forestall inflation. Rakibah, who is State Infrastructure Committee Chairperson, said the draft development plans for the river basin areas would be submitted to the state government for approval shortly. She said the Sungai Selangor Basin would be developed for tourism and as the administrative and commercial centre for the region, the Sungai Tinggi Basin for agriculture and the Sungai Buloh Basin for industrial use. Abu Hassan was picked by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad to succeed Tan Sri Muhammad Haji Muhamad Taib who resigned on April 14, following a court case in Brisbane.

Sabbaruddin Chik Is the New Umno Secretary-General
28 NOV 1996 Mahathir-secretary-general SABBARUDDIN CHIK IS THE NEW UMNO SECRETARY-GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Sabbaruddin Chik was appointed Umno secretary-general tonight, replacing Datuk Mohamed Rahmat who has held the post since Decenber, 1990. Former Public Enterprises Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Nor was appointed information chief, replacing Tan Sri Hussein Ahmad, who has held the post for 15 years. The appointments were announced by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad after chairing the first meeting of the new Umno supreme council at the party headquarters here tonight. He also announced that Tun Daim Zainuddin would retain his post as the party's treasurer-general. Temerloh-born Datuk Sabbaruddin Chik, entered politics in the 1970s but rose to prominence in 1980 when he was elected youth leader of the Kampung Paya Jejawi branch in Temerloh. The political star of this "kampung boy", who will turn 55 on Dec 11, began to shine when he was elected Temerloh Umno division youth leader in 1981 and won the Temerloh parliamentary seat in 1982. An elected Umno supreme Council member from 1984 until he lost the post in the Oct 10 party elections, he has been the Temerloh Umno division head since 1984 and Pahang Umno Liaison Committee deputy chairman since 1991. He holds a bachelor's (honours) degree from Universiti Malaya and a master's degree from the Institute of Social Studies, the Hague, Holland. Sabbaruddin was Deputy Finance Minister after the 1982 general election and became the first Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister when the ministry was created on May 20, 1987.

UMNO Factionalism and The Politics Of Malaysian National Identity JAE HYON LEE This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2005 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. .................................. Abstract This thesis analyses UMNO factionalism from the perspective of the elite’s manipulation of the various modes of nationalisms. This thesis argues that UMNO factionalism, which is seemingly a power struggle between competing UMNO elites, has been significantly shaped by contesting nationalist ideologies that reflect the unresolved questions of national identity in Malaysia. These two issues, that is, nationalism and UMNO factionalism, have shaped Malaysian politics in significant ways. UMNO factionalism has been related to such major political events as the 1969 ethnic riots, the introduction of the New Economic Policy, the UMNO split in 1987 and the Reformasi (Reform) movement in 1998. Frequently, the impact of these disputes extended beyond UMNO politics and affected wider Malaysian politics. At the same time, due to unresolved questions of national identity, nationalism has occupied a central position in Malaysian political discourse. There are ambiguities regarding the relationships among the various ethnic identities and national identity and between the individual and the larger Malaysian community that enable elites to construct and manipulate nationalist ideologies. In this thesis, the conflicting nationalisms are captured by five different concepts of nationalism – ethnocultural, civic and multicultural nationalisms in one group and collectivist-authoritarian and individualistic-libertarian nationalisms in another.

10 MAY 1997 Mahathir-Muhammad UMNO SUPREME COUNCIL APPROVES MUHAMMAD'S APPLICATION FOR LEAVE KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (Bernama) -- Umno vice president Tan Sri Muhammad Muhamad Taib, who faces two charges in a Brisbane court pertaining to his alleged attempt to transfer cash equivalent to RM2.4 million out of Australia, has been granted leave from attending Umno supreme council meetings. Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said that the Umno Supreme Council, at its meeting today, approved his application for leave until after the disposal of the cases. Muhammad was detained at the Brisbane international airport on Dec 22, last year and charged the following day. He resigned as Selangor Menteri Besar and chairman of the Selangor and Federal Territory Umno Liaison Committee on April 14. Dr Mahathir, who chaired the meeting, also announced the appointment of Selangor Menteri Besar-designate Datuk Abu Hassan Omar as chairman of the Selangor Umno Liaison Committee. Titiwangsa Umno Division head Datuk Suleiman Mohamad has been appointed chairman of the Federal Territory Umno Liaison Committee. Muhammad did not attend today's Supreme Council meeting. Asked if Muhammad had gone on leave at the request of the council, Dr Mahathir said: "Muhammad (himself) applied for leave." Umno secretary-general Datuk Sabbaruddin Chik, asked by reporters later as to when Muhammad applied for for the leave, said: "He sought the leave before this meeting, but I can't remember the date." Several people from within and outside the party have previously said that they felt Muhammad should in addition to resigning as the Selangor Menteri Besar also give up his Umno vice-president's post.

05 JUN 1997 Mahathir-Graft MAHATHIR: UMNO MEMBERS MUST FIGHT GRAFT AND SEEN CLEAN KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad today called on Umno and government members to steadfastly fight corruption and in this context "they must not only be clean but also be seen to be clean." Dr Mahathir, who is Umno president, said fighting graft required determined efforts to prevent erosion of Umno and the government's credibility. "Graft is unhealthy for the party and the government," he said during a 15-minute video tele-conferencing connecting him in London with Acting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Umno headquarters here. Dr Mahathir said:"Our friends may be involved. But if we don't take action they may think we'll defend whatever they do since we (the government) have the powers." The prime minister was visiting the Fraser Nash Research Ltd, UK in the British capital. Also present at the Umno headquarters were party secretary-general Datuk Sabbaruddin Chik, vice-presidents Datuk Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Youth Chief Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Wanita leader Dr Siti Zaharah Sulaiman and party information chief Datuk Dr Yusof Nor. The video teleconferencing with Dr Mahathir, who is currently on two-month vacation abroad, took place after Anwar chaired a three-hour-long Umno Supreme Council meeting at the party headquarters. Dr Mahathir said the fight against graft, which got full backing from the Cabinet, should also get solid support from all Umno members. "Hence I hope this very important undertaking gets the endorsement of today's Supreme Council Meeting," Dr Mahathir said.
