The Supreme Discipline of Mountaineering
The Supreme Discipline of Mountaineering To what heaven would it lead me to climb a mountain that flew? Christoph Ransmayr, “The Flying Mountain” MMM Corones on Kronplatz – between the Gader Valley, Olang and the Puster Valley – is the final act in the Messner Mountain Museum project (which comprises a total of six facilities). On the edge of South Tyrol’s mountain plateau with the most spectacular views, in the unique museum architecture created by Zaha Hadid, I present the crowning of traditional mountaineering. Kronplatz offers views beyond the borders of South Tyrol to all points of the compass: from the Lienz Dolomites in the east to the Ortler in the west, from the Marmolada in the south to the Zillertal Alps in the north. The museum is a mirror of the world of my childhood - the Geislerspitzen, the central buttress of the Heiligkreuzkofel (the most difficult climb in my whole life) and the glaciated granite mountains of the Ahrn Valley. On Kronplatz I present the development of modern mountaineering and 250 years of progress with regard to the equipment. I speak of triumphs and tragedies on the world’s most famous peaks – the Matterhorn, Cerro Torre, K2 – and the depiction of our activity, however contradictory it may seem. As in my other museums, I shed light on alpinism with the help of relics, thoughts, works of art (pictures and sculptures) and by reflecting the outside mountain backcloth in the interior of MMM Corones. As the storyteller of traditional mountaineering, it is not my intention to judge or dramatise but simply to condense human experience of a world that is my world, of the 250-year-old contest between man and the mountain. -

In this First published online: 9 September 2020 study, we analyse the geomorphometric characteristics of 46 mass-balance glaciers in the Alps Key words: and the long-term mass-balance time series for a subset of nine reference glaciers. We identify climate change; glacier mass balance; glacier regime shifts in the mass-balance time series (when non-climatic controls started impacting) monitoring; mountain glaciers and develop a glacier vulnerability index (GVI) as a proxy for their possible future development, based on criteria such as hypsometric index, breaks in slope, thickness distribution and elevation Author for correspondence: Luca Carturan, E-mail: [email protected] change pattern. -
Fabian Lächler Optimization of Regionalized Precipitation with Radar and Rain Gauge Data for Trentino-Alto Adige
Fabian Lächler Optimization of Regionalized Precipitation with Radar and Rain Gauge Data for Trentino-Alto Adige MASTER’S THESIS Submitted to the Institute of Geography, University of Innsbruck In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree Master Advisors: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ulrich Strasser Ass. Prof. Dr. Thomas Marke September 2017 Abstract The accurate measurement of rainfall is an important prerequisite for various applications of meteorology, hydrology and their subsections. The reliable detection of precipitation fields is difficult, particularly in mountainous regions. To provide the best possible measurement, rain gauge and precipitation radar data are combined in state-of-the-art weather models. However, these state-of- the-art methods have only been extensively used for a short period of time. For the study area, which is mostly located in the central eastern Alps in the Italian federal state Trentino-Alto Adige, no radar data from Gantkofel mountain had been integrated between 2004 and 2009. Therefore the aim of this master thesis was to develop a state-of-the-art algorithm which calculates retrospective precipitation fields for the years from 2004 to 2009. The algorithm, which is strongly orientated towards the INCA model developed by ZAMG (Haiden et al., 2011), computes a weighted combination of rain gauge and radar data. It takes into account the reduced visibility of radar in mountainous areas. Furthermore the elevation dependence of precipitation is considered. Three evaluation methods were selected to determine the accuracy of the developed model. Firstly, image differencing between the self- developed and the INCA model without the Gantkofel radar was carried out. -

Population 3 2. Economy 7 2.1 Tourism 7 2.2 Jobs 8 3. Public services and society 11 4. Summary 12 Appendix Tables 14 1. POPULATION This report examines the socio-economic structure of the Vinschgau district. In order to highlight the special features of this region even better, a comparison with the neighbouring district of Burggrafenamt and South Tyrol as a whole will be carried out. The district Vinschgau consists of 13 municipalities and is located in the west of South Tyrol on the border to Austria and Switzerland. With 35,500 inhabitants and an area of 1,442 km², it is one of the least densely populated areas in South Tyrol. Due to its central location and around 6,000 inhabitants, Schlanders is the capital of the Vinschgau district. The Burggrafenamt, on the other hand, has a much larger population of around 101,600 inhabitants, 40 percent of which are living in Merano, the district's capital. The 26 municipalities of this district cover an area of 1,101 km². Figure 1.1 Location of the districts Vinschgau and Burggrafenamt Source: WIFO © 2018 WIFO Until the reopening of the Vinschgau railway in 2005, the district of Vinschgau was only poorly integrated into South Tyrol's public transport network. The accessibility of the valley by road has also always been difficult, as it is remote from the main traffic axis (Brenner motorway) and the main road is regularly congested. -

Accompany us on a walk. Farmers Market at Chiusa/ Klausen A visit to the state capital is almost obligatory when you spend your holidays in South Tyrol. Bolzano is certainly the most Italian city in the region. This is also due the fact that you can see architectural remnants of fascism all around town, such as the court building or the eternal controversy of the monument. On the menu of various restaurants, you will also find typical dishes from the Tyrolean cuisine like Spaghetti Fromgole, Schlutzkrapfen, Tiramisù or Strauben. In Bolzano you will find women dressed in traditional wear like the Dirndl next to noble shops like Dolce & Gabbana and the thick dialect of the Sarntal Valley next to precise High German language. The Ötzi Museum You shouldn’t miss the exhibition about Ötzi, the Ice Man: A mummy from the Copper Age, 5.300 years old, recovered in 1991 with its clothing and Thursdays from May to October equipment.
