 KING-DOME COME St Paul’s Cathedral is a monument in London and the mother church of the Diocese of the city. Sitting on Ludgate Hill, the highest point of the City of London, the domed Cathedral was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1962. Today, this dome is still among the highest in the world. With this imposing building and the richness of the gold ceilings in mind, Marco Sousa has created ‘Dome’, a mirror in a bright polished brass. Almost ‘half bubble’ in their form, these domes come together in a series of undulating circles, proposing the grandeur of the Catherdral that it was design based on, with the carbonated quality of bubbles rising through the water.  THE OYSTER To celebrate the launch of their new ‘oyster’ veneer, Helen Green Design introduced two new pieces to furniture Collection III. The Oyster veneer, made from figured sycamore and reminiscent of the black pearl is presented here as part of the Nino tables, using a trio of hues to create a striking and yet naturalistic effect. The finish is available in a matt and gloss format and is just as stunning in both. The soft grey has got us all goo goo for the hue in the IDT office and the rippling pearl effect that runs through it gives the material a lucid quality. v www.helengreendesign.com

Café Boulud

CLASSICISM IN CANADA

Martin Brudnizki Design Studio has redesigned Café Boulud, Toronto, a classic mid-century brasserie with a contemporary twist. Located in the Four Seasons Toronto, the new interior displays a modernist playfulness yet feels comfortably current as a warm palette and fun furnishings match the elegance and sophistication synonymous with the hotel it occupies, alongside Daniel Boulud’s world- famous cuisine. The design is inspired by the finest craftsmanship of the modern era, from the stylish ruched leather chairs in opulent oxblood, to the ribbed banquettes, upholstered in either tan leather complete with tweed detailing of Jaguar green leather. Further accents of colour can be found in the corner tables, made from an emerald green lava stone. The walls share a similar , as a walnut frame with bull nose detailing borders a high-gloss green lacquer panel below and Hermes wall covering in a blue herringbone pattern, sits above, displaying an illustrative and handcrafted quality. The contemporary art selection is sleek yet simple. The restaurant is illuminated with a line of 14 bespoke double globe pendant lights down the middle. Taking inspiration from the mid-century design maestro, Angelo Lelli, the spherical shape, weightless structure and brass detailing add to the relaxed feeling of the Café Boulud. Mbds.com

The Cinnamon Club

A SPRINKLE OF CINNAMON

Vivek Singh’s ‘slice of old India’, The Cinnamon Club, reopened its doors in September after undergoing a refurbishment in preparation for its 15th anniversary. The Cinnamon Club worked with B3 Designers, who have revived and enhanced the traditional features of the Grade II-listed grand building, which once housed Westminster Library. B3 Designers have enriched the 242 covers, 363 square metre restaurant with strong colours, majestic finishes juxtaposed with contemporary yet luxurious pieces of furniture in true Cinnamon Club style. Soaring ceilings, elegant tables, shelves filled with antiquarian books and vintage wood panelling create a mood of club-like serenity. Marble tabletops have been used in the main dinning room to create an elegant ‘dressed’ appearance to the tables. The introduction of new seating booths, with bespoke brass stripe detailing, has made a dramatic improvement to the area under the mezzanine space. It is also here that B3 Designers have fitted new timber and mirror panelling to match the existing panelling and create a continuing feature. The library bookcases that wrap the main dining space have been restored and, as a main focal point, work to revive the heritage of the building. In the Mezzanine area above the main dining space, a striking blue colour has been applied to the walls tying this space to the dining area beneath. The walls have been adorned with artwork and new banquette seating has been installed. In the Private dining room, duck egg has been applied on the walls to tie the space together and overcome the large scale of the room. www.b3designers.co.uk

Hôtel du Ministère

HOMAGE TO ART

Located just steps away from the Church of La Madeleine, Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré and the Champs-Elysées, the Hôtel du Ministère, designed by interior architect and designer François Champsaur in 2011, has now added 18 new rooms to its original 24. Linked by a bright and colourful breakfast room, the two adjacent buildings now adjoin the original hotel. The new street side wing is crowned with a top floor skylight whilst the courtyard side wing features a regal Eiffel Tower style structural façade. The new Hôtel du Ministère addition offers unique duplexes and singular rooms with glass ceilings. Romantic spaces with an industrial Eiffel Tower aesthetic, bathed in starlight streaming through glass ceilings, with warm beech wood nests integrated with the original hotel panelling. François Champsaur puts his stamp on yet another project for the Hotel du Ministere, paying tribute to the artist and fashion designer studios that were formerly housed in this building. The metal structure of one of the building’s façades reflects the late nineteenth century architectural style of the Eiffel Tower. Many of the hotel rooms overlooking the courtyard enjoy two-story steel-framed glass walls that provide light and spectacular panoramic views of Paris. Echoing the existing industrial aesthetic of the building, the design objective for this addition aimed to be particularly resolutely graphic. Geographic forms contrast and complement one another, just as pops of colour balance the predominant presence of black and white, enhancing the rooms in unexpected/surprising ways. The spirit of the ‘artist’s studio’ is omnipresent in the linear fixtures and fittings along with the of the black and white carpet. www.champsaur.com

Lakes by Yoo

A SOFT TOUCH

Halo Design Associates created a calm and tranquil oasis on the top floor of this three storey lakeside house designed for its owners, using creams and off whites colours specifically requested by the client. Halo added the winged headboard in a silver embossed faux animal skin fabric to gently frame the room, studded on the leading edges with rows of small chrome studs for definition. Texture was added with a quirky Icelandic sheep clad fur sofa and softly textured wallpaper with hints of distressed wood cladding. Warmth was added by faceted bronze glass pendant lights either side of the bed. The sheers running in clean pocket headers either side of the master bedroom soften the edges whilst allowing light through the large windows overlooking the lake and maintaining privacy. www.halodesigninteriors.com

PAD London is the definitive destination for 20th century art, design and decorative arts. Running during October, the fair takes place on Berkeley Square, showcasing of 62 prominent galleries from Europe, North America and the Middle East. Championing eclectic taste and inspiring cross collecting at the highest level, PAD delivers a strong blend of modern art, photography, design, decorative and tribal arts. For 2015, Francis Sultana was taksed with delivering the design of the bar and restaurant during the event. The space, on the first floor of the PAD marquee, was transformed into one of London’s most prestigious restaurants for the duration of the show. Francis Sultana decided to celebrate the Anglo-French connection within an interior scheme that celebrates the history of 20th century and 21st century design. A bold green, black and white colour palette was offset with palm trees and palm motifs. A sense of neo-classical is also apparent within the bold pediment of the bar area with influences from Elsa Schiaparelli, Jean-Michel Frank and Emilio Terry. Sultana will also nod to the more contemporary and conceptual. www.francissultana.com

SHOWER POWER

A high specification refurbishment and extension project at a residential property in West London has included installation of linear shower drains selected from the extensive range of Dallmer Limited. Two stylish shower spaces were created: one designed as a wet room while the other featured a two metre high glass wall set into a floor channel, with a rain head over. The Dallmer range was chosen to ensure water was removed unobtrusively but effectively from the floor. Dallmer supplied two of its Ceraline-W-800 mm floor channels with Ceraline Custom cover plates. In both cases the floor drains, with their adjustable ball joint outlet connection, have a flow capacity of at least 48 litres/minute, were installed along the base of the back wall to the showering area, with the client’s preferred floor finish fitting seamlessly around and into the elegantly engineered channel sections. 01787 248244 | [email protected] | www.dallmer.com

GLITTERING GARDEN

For the Garden Lounge & Restaurant project set inside Hotel Giardino, Ascona, Lake Maggiore, Matteo Thun & Partners selected ORIS IP65 by Buzzi & Buzzi. The product provides diffused lighting and water resistance to create a stunningly lit restaurant area. With this solution, Matteo Thun & Partners creates not only a place within the bar, restaurant and lounge, but also a suggestive meeting place that exists without time, and is in contact with nature. The winter garden and the setting are enhanced by the choice of Buzzi & Buzzi total recessed lighting products. In particular ORIS IP65 in Coral WaterOut® allowed a spread of light, helping to maintain the vegetation of the vertical green wall. This luminaire fits perfectly near damp spaces. The IP65 grade gives the ideal qualities to be installed outside and in places with high humidity. The project had ambitious aims from the lighting and botanic point of view. Buzzi & Buzzi installed ORIS IP65 in metal halide version CDMR111: with the adjustabe basket inside and the possibility to alternate 35W and 70W lamps, oriented respectively toward the top and the bottom of the wall. www.buzzi-buzzi.it

CUBIST MOVEMENT

Cimitree took an eye-catchingly different approach when designing their stand for Decorex this year. Director and Co-Founder Chris Thorpe explained, “Normally we would design and make two or three brand new pieces of bespoke furniture for an exhibition, this year we wanted to highlight the vast array of different materials and finishes that we can and do work with. We decided that rather than display flat samples we would make a series of cubes that visitors could pick up and handle and really get a feel for the materials.” Cimitree displayed over 120 cubes in a huge range of materials including wooden veneers, leather and fabric, specialist lacquers, gold and silvers leaf , hand applied paint finishes, shell and polished plaster to name but a few. After an eight year break, Tektura Wallcoverings once again exhibited at Decorex. Launching over 19 new designs for the hotel and high-end residential interiors market, this season’s introductions include many fabric-backed vinyl wallcoverings. Quartz Block combines swirls of colour and shimmering metallic foils with dramatic effect. Reminiscent of artisanal marbled papers, the design comes in five refined colour ways. Amphora is a new iridescent cork tile effect wallcovering available in a range of pearls and metallics. This versatile design embraces the character of cork and distressed plaster whilst retaining a feel of luxury and depth. Shibori is a large scaled ikat stripe design with a classic silk texture. Colours include black and gold, indigo and silver, as well as subtle neutral shades. Also available is a plain coordinate, Shibori Silk. Alongside these, Tektura are also introducing Rare Finds, a brand new collection of specialist high-end surfaces from around the world. TAKING SHAPE

Bette used 100% Design as the UK launch platform for a number of innovative new product ranges, including the ground-breaking BetteLux Shape range. The company demonstrated its high level of flexibility for bathroom designers, in terms of range, colour choice, sizes and bespoke options. The highlight of the stand was the BetteLux Shape range; a new concept in baths, washbasins and accessories, which places the soft and flowing shape of the BetteLux bath and washbasin in an open steel frame, with baths and washbasins enamelled on both the inside and the outside. The show was also the UK launch of two more enamelled steel bath and washbasin ranges, a new furniture concept that flexibly connects products in the Bette range to create bathrooms that blend into bedrooms, and its enamelled steel, flush-to-floor shower area with barely-visible anti-slip option. Bette enamelled steel baths, shower floors and washbasins are highly durable and come with a 30 year warranty. 0844 800 0547 | www.bette.co.uk

TILT AND TOWEL

JIS Europe Ltd. has launched a new offering under its Sussex Range of heated towel rails. The Rye Tilting Rail has been designed to resemble a sleek, ultra modern ladder, leaning casually and lightly against the wall in a clever design twist. The Rye range of towel rails is available in three different heating formats: these being electric only, dual fuel and the ability to be utilised solely with central heating. The rails are also suitable for open plumbing systems. Measuring 1800mm x 520mm, tapering to 300mm at the top, the JIS element is constructed from 100% stainless steel, with a built in thermostat to prevent the rail from becoming too hot and, of course, to reduce running costs. With a BTU rating of 1878, the rail consumes just 550 Watts; while each one is manufactured with standard 1/2” BSP tappings and is pressure tested to 12 Bar. Offering a choice of either satin or a highly polished steel surface, all Rye towel rails are hand finished by the company’s craftsmen to ensure the highest quality is maintained. 01444 831200 | [email protected] www.sussexrange.co.uk

ROPE BOUND

Efasma unveiled its first collection at this year’s 100% Design. Designed by London based architects Bureau de Change, the essence of the collection is drawn from the brand’s origins in Greece, inspired by a wish to utilise talented local craftsmen and draw their skills out from the shadows of industrial manufacture. Single lengths of 100 per cent cotton rope bind chair frames together, giving them rigidity, a concept, which exemplifies the use of traditional techniques as a platform for innovation. Handcraftsmanship is enhanced by nanotechnology, which repels dirt from the cotton textile, increasing its longevity. The collection is made up of handwoven walnut framed seating, substantial marble and timber dining tables, a coffee table and room divider. The depth and richness of the woven surfaces are amplified by clean, graphic forms across the range and their combination with highlights of glossy marble and brass. THE APONI COLLECTION

Joined + Jointed, the contemporary furniture collective, launched a new collection during London Design Festival at 100% Design. The brand, whose aim is ‘creation through collaboration’, is welcoming a new addition to its design ranks, Lucy Kurrein, an award-winning young designer based in London’s docklands. She has created a new cabinet collection for Joined + Jointed, characterised by elemental forms combined with subtle detailing, pieces with a bold yet soft aesthetic. Made in oak and walnut, Lucy has named her collection ‘Aponi’, the Native American word for ‘butterfly’, referencing the symmetrical pattern created by her play on wood grain - one of the distinguishing features of her pieces. J+J founder Samuel Chan worked closely with Lucy in developing the collection, collaborating in a year when both designers enjoyed critical success: Lucy was named Young Furniture Designer of the Year and Samuel Furniture Designer of the Year in the Homes & Gardens Awards in March. www.joinedandjointed.com

RUN AWAY WITH IT

Well known for striking and smart flatweave runners in pure wool, woven and hand finished in the UK, Roger Oates now offers a bespoke option for customers who want to choose their own colours and have something totally unique. Customers can customise existing designs by choosing their own colours from the Roger Oates colour palette. If a particular shade is required the yarn can be especially dyed. Roger and his team work closely with clients to create the perfect colour balance. A computer print out of the design is printed and once approved, a 35cm x 35cm sample is woven on a handloom. Featured here is a minimal symmetrical stripe design inspired by an old French linen cloth. It is currently available in three colours, Denim, Raspberry and Granite. As an example of a bespoke project, Roger Oates used the runners, dyed in two different ways for a family home recently. The bespoke service is priced individually and varies according to the length, design and colours chosen. A minimum order length applies. 020 7351 2288 | www.rogeroates.com

Design edit Design Edit. The surreal, eye-catching designs of the Signature Carpets in the Moooi repertoire convey a sense of depth, intensity and motion. 48 breathtaking, eccentric and playful carpets have been designed by renowned names of the design, fashion and visual arts worlds, each creation representing its designer and the amazing world of his/her expertise and imagination.

 CELLULAR Designed by designer and visionary Ross Lovegrove, cellular has been inspired by the genesis of the building blocks of life. This carpet design evokes the theory that in the future, man-created structures might grow from a code, as in nature. It at once looks like digital code and honeycomb, the silken honey tones of the carpet melting into the neutral background. A honeybee, caught in its kingdom, this carpet is naturalistic, yet futuristic in its intention. Dimensions, 200 x 300cm. Priced at €1.899. v moooicarpets.com/

EDEN KING . First spotted at the Focus preview event at Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, this carpet design caught the eye of editor Jade Tilley, with it’s Kaleidoscopic print and subtle neon tones. Designed by Marcel Wanders, the black and white gives a nod to the photographic intelligence of the carpet, whilst the lime hint brings it in line with it’s floral nature. Wanders’ work is ubiquitous and his latest foray into carpet design, in conjunction with Moooi, continues his portfolio of high profile brand partnerships. Dimensions, 200 x 300cm. Priced at €1.699. v moooicarpets.com/

 CRYSTAL ROSE Crystal Rose is part of Moooi carpet’s five jacquard woven carpets, designed specifically by Marcel Wanders, which, with sophisticated and refined details, reproduce flat woven designs of 3D images that appear to be literally carved into the carpets. The jewel palette is sumptuous and alluring and invites you to touch, not just with your feet, but with your hands, to discover the depths of the carpet and it’s misleading, albeit beguiling façade. Dimensions, 200 x 300cm. Price on request. v moooicarpets.com/

The various elegant finishes in high-grade materials means Deseo blends easily in every interior. Over the past years, Deseo, has won multiple prestigious design prizes. Next to the Red Dot Design Award and the Henry van de Velde label, Deseo also has been awarded the iF award 2012, the Design Plus Award and the Innovationspreis Architektur + Technik. REVIVING THE AESTHETIC

Integral LED has once again targeted the retro fit lamp market by focusing on aesthetic detail. The UK LED manufacturer has championed products that look identical to the original halogen or incandescent bulb that they are designed to replace. Over the last couple of years, classic GLS equivalents have been a highlight of their expanding range. Now Integral’s new LED GU10s have taken a retro-step back to glass. Integral’s new Classic Glass range of glass bodied LED GU10s have revived the aesthetic look of a dichroic halogen spotlight. The solid therma-plastic body of current LED models has been replaced by glass, which is a perfect complement for many existing decorative luminaires. The Classic Glass range also features a derivative of the popular ‘fly-eye’ lens that reduces glare by focussing the light beam through a collimated prism. The source consists of several LED chips or surface mounted devices that combine to generate a ‘COB-like’ light that decreases the heat profile of the lamp thus allowing for the use of glass. 020 8451 8700 | www.integral-led.com

THE INDUSTRIAL REVELATION

Astro’s Atelier range has been created to evoke the type of task-lamp you would find in a craftsman’s workshop of old: think toolmaker, architect or jewellery designer. It has fully articulated joints to provide maximum adjustability. James Bassant, who conceived the range, and Rob Speck who engineered it, decided to highlight the design of these joints by leaving them in a raw polished aluminium finish, regardless of the colour of the lamp (they come in white, black or natural aluminium). innermost has announced a fourth colour that will join the Matrioshka colour way. Smoke is a dark colour that illuminates wonderfully on the lamp’s shapely form. Design trends tend to be unpredictable and subject to sudden change. But one trend that has certainly been on the rise is smoke or cloudy glass. Smoke coloured glass is sultry and mysterious. Its dark outline calls for intensity and drama. Smoked glass can be retro, but its understated appearance also lends beautifully to creating quiet sophistication or loud contrasts against other materials in a modern setting, such as iridescent pieces or metallics. MATRIOSHKA is a product of Stone Design’s curious investigation into the beautiful medium of glass - translucent bodies of colour reflect and refract light, reshaping the world through each lens. Hand- blown in the Czech Republic, then assembled in the Telford Factory in the UK, this new glass collection was first launched in red, blue, and yellow during this year’s Euroluce in Milan. 020 7620 1808 | [email protected] | www.innermost.net

COMMEMORATIVE BAFFO

Baffo is a commemorative feature light piece, designed and created in conjunction with Matteo Bianchi studios to commemorate 40 years of industry excellence. With a dual circuit, this feature design is able to adapt seamlessly to different lighting requirements making it the perfect medium for hard to light spaces. The small accent lights on the product’s stem offer gentle illumination, whilst the main LED module spotlights a larger target area. These features can be utilised both simultaneously and separately. The aesthetic of this new design owes much to brass band regular the trombone, which Bianchi cites as the main inspiration behind his design. The lamp’s sleek lines and narrow neck flare overhead into a daffodil like skirt that houses the main lighting feature, while the accompanying accent lighting, comprising two smaller LEDs, creates the thin beams of light that give the product the name Baffo, Italian for moustache. 01371 873313 | www.bluebellfinishes.co.uk

Design stories

LOOK BACK, MOVE FORWARD

MICHAEL ANASTASSIADES, DESIGNER FOR FLOS, REFLECTS ON THE GREATS OF THE LIGHTING BRAND AND CONSIDERS THE PAST TO MOVE FORWARD WITH DESIGN

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN BACKGROUND. I trained as an engineer at Imperial College and then went on to study for my Masters in Design at the Royal College. It was a bit of a shift in my career. I always wanted to be creative and I think it was the right time for me to move on and focus on design. Before then I didn’t know what I wanted. I liked my degree, the practical thinking and the very real sense of purpose it has, but the creative side of things eventually called me over.

WHERE DID THE FLOS BRAND BEGIN? AT WHAT POINT DID YOU COME TO BE A PART OF IT? It all started in 2011. I was introduced to Piero Gandini as people had seen my mobile work, actually at my own exhibition at Euroluce. I was there with my own studio. I also had a show at the Palazzo Durini, Milan, Art Gallery, so my work was out there in the public sector. Patricia Urquiola introduced us (another designer for Flos) and four months later we met in London.

WHAT DOES FLOS REPRESENT IN 2016? It is a deeply historical brand and there are many associations from over the years. Great designers who came before us paved the way and continue to do so. Castiglioni, Scarpa, their names carry so much in the industry and with good reason. This is what Flos is. They have a great vision and have maintained it for a long time. They have design integrity. With Piero Gandini, the vision is still there. What Flos represents is a continuation of this. For me, working with this brand is so exciting because it is a true partnership in every sense of the word. You have to want to work with the people you enter into these partnerships with and I trust Flos completely.

HOW DO YOU CONTINUE TO INNOVATE IN YOUR FIELD? Essentially for me it is to maintain and protect my vision. The reason I set up my own brand in 2007 was to allow my own ideas to grow and be produced, to continue my vision right into production. I see it as a platform to create. When the designs proves themselves and become noticed, you feel stronger in your own design work. I think to innovate means to maintain this strength. It is also about partnerships, bringing two people or groups together who share an idea. That is innovation.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR FLOS AND YOURSELF IN THE DESIGN SECTOR? I think for me, jumping from small production into production on a much more industrial level is a challenge. Technology is also a great challenge, for everyone, Flos included, for the simple reason that it is so hard to keep up with the rate of change. The way that Flos embraces technology means that they are always up to date and that is a great feeling when working with them.

WHAT DOES FLOS LOOK LIKE AS A COMPANY IN 20 YEARS’ TIME? I think you can predict the future by looking at the past. Look back to look forward. Flos and many other companies will probably find that it is not about expanding into the future, but about narrowing and scaling down, distilling true creativity and singling out the very essence of it. It will be more mature of course, and experienced and with that brings a great new chapter.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE DESIGNERS WHEN YOU BEGIN WORKING RELATIONSHIPS? It doesn’t matter who you are or your design background, you must speak the same ‘design language’. Is your vision the same? It has to be to succeed. www.flos.com

THEATRICALLY LIT

An installation of Bright Goods LED filament lamps has helped the Kitchen Table achieve energy savings of over 70 per cent at the newly opened dining ‘theatre’. The Kitchen Table wanted to deliver a unique experience to members of its dining audience who are positioned around a theatrically-themed open kitchen. It was important to incorporate lighting that would enhance the overall ambience of the unique experience and so Victoria LED filament lamps from the Bright Goods range were chosen. The Victoria is the perfect choice for the Kitchen Table. Its innovative blend of 21st Century efficiency and 19th Century styling creates a stunning and welcoming atmosphere within the dining ‘auditorium’. With a classical shape that harks back to a bygone era, complemented by a fully-dimmable warm glow, the Victoria has proved to be one of the most popular offerings on the Kitchen Table’s menu. www.ledecolights.com

INSPIRED BY NATURE

Danish designer Øivind Slaatto has taken nature as his inspiration to create a new and unusual light through a creative partnership with Louis Poulsen. Patera is intended to serve as a modern chandelier, a light that unifies the space and makes any room a more human place to spend time in. The ball-shaped pendant floats like a majestic focal point in the room, spreading light in all directions. At first glance, it seems to be just a white, perforated ball, but closer inspection reveals its detailed design featuring a host of circles, angles and holes. Patera emits a soft, pleasant light, whose secret lies in its intricate design: the light consists of a variety of differently positioned cells, which ensure the correct angles are applied to the visor lines of the light and guard against all unpleasant glare. At the same time, the structure staggers the visual centre of Patera, consistently providing new impressions of the light when viewed from different angles. www.louispoulsen.com

MINI ICONS

Hot on the heels of the Original 1227™ Brass Collection, Anglepoise® has revealed a new four piece, Original 1227™ Mini Collection. The collection, which comprises a desk, table and two wall lamps, will be available worldwide from January 2016. What’s so new about the Original 1227™ Mini? First and foremost, it's the scale. Consider the articulated Original 1227™ Mini Desk Lamp for example; a downsized carbon copy of the most iconic and best loved 1930’s Anglepoise® design. Scaled down to two-thirds of its original size the lamp assumes a new identity. Repeat the exercise with table, wall and wall-mounted lights and see how they are equally transformed. Anglepoise® has also come up with two Mini wall light options: a traditional wall light, which comes complete with a stylish sconce with integral switch and a wall mounted light for maximum flexibility and movement. The arrival of the new Original 1227™ Mini Collection is just the start of a carefully orchestrated colour refresh that will extend to a new, expanded, full-size Original 1227™ Collection by Spring/Summer 2016. www.anglepoise.com | Image courtesy of Jake Curtis

My icon

MY ICON REBEKAH CAUDWELL, FOUNDER, REBEKAH CAUDWELL DESIGN, REVEALS HER DESIGN ICON

Rebekah Caudwell founded her design practice in 2009. She is based in London and NYC with clients on both continents. Her design work is residential. In 2012 Nicolas Dupart, Rebekah's husband, took partnership one stage further and joined as co-President & CFO. Rebekah and Nicolas personally design and manage every project themselves, with the help of their team. They believe in value for the client and in creating something personal, warm and expressive.

WHO IS YOUR DESIGN ICON? I’m fascinated by the early female originators of interior design. This was a field that started to become acceptable for women around the turn of the 19th century. The originators pushed all the boundaries with their intelligence, talent, ambition and charm. My favourites; are Madeleine Castaing, Sibyll Colefax, Elsie de Wolfe and Syrie Maugham. And then there is Dorothy Draper who could make colour sing in the most outlandish and fabulous ways.

WHAT WAS DOROTHY DRAPER MOST FAMOUS FOR? Draper was a maximalist through and through, and brought in the Modern Baroque. She created interiors like 1930s film sets, bringing the drama and glamour of Hollywood into people’s homes and hotels. She was a pioneer, unafraid of colour, unafraid of pattern, unafraid of scale. We have seen much of this kind of work now, and she has spawned many great designers so it is hard for us to really comprehend how extraordinary Draper’s colours and design were at the time. Alongside of her strong colour use she is renowned for her large-scale chintzy floral patterns, huge leafy carpets and extra wide stripes.

HOW WAS DRAPER’S WORK RECEIVED DURING HER HEIGHT OF PROMINENCE? Draper was a six-foot tall beauty, extremely well connected in society, confident and a wit. She and her work were highly and widely admired. It may not have been to everyone’s taste, but she was soon receiving important commissions. She was brought in to do the Carlyle Hotel, NYC. Subsequently the Greenbrier Hotel, W Virginia established her as the leading decorator of the day in the USA. The Hotel had served as a rehabilitation centre during WWII so she was tasked with transforming and relaunching it. The grand reopening attracted luminaries and society alike, with figures such as Bing Crosby and the Duke & Duchess of Windsor in attendance.

WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN DOROTHY DRAPER AS YOUR ‘ICON’? I love fearlessness in life. This is not the same as recklessness. It is being able to live with courage, to follow your own path with your own convictions. I first heard the adage ‘A life lived in fear is a life half lived’ watching Strictly Ballroom by Baz Luhrman (another glorious maximalist!) and it is something that struck a chord and stayed with me. Draper did what she wanted, against convention, against the restrictions of gender and era.

IF YOU COULD BE REMEMBERED FOR ONE ELEMENT OF YOUR DESIGN, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Creating happiness. This is something that does not sound very serious, but ultimately there is nothing more serious in life. www.rebekahcaudwelldesign.com | Image courtesy of Rei Moon, Moon Ray Studio

SCULPTED BY HISTORY

I Tesori presents Griff Werk. This Germany based company originated in Italy in 1946; the Italian roots are still present within their stylish range of products, coupled with German engineering resulting in stunning creations that are guaranteed to work. Predominantly made from stainless steel, the range includes the award winning Rotella R8 Glass Sliding Door system and the unrivalled Piatta handle with a 1.3mm thick rose, likened to the original door handle designed for The Ulm School of Design (HfG), which is regarded as one of the most important international design institutes since the Second World War. Former Bauhaus student Max Bill designed the architectural concept. Together with his student, Ernst Moeckel, he designed a handle for the university building in the 1950’s. Griff Werk contacted his son Dr. Jakob Bill in 2012 when the university had been renovated and refurbished. This was followed by precise research and intensive development work from the support of the designer Jakob Zumbuhl and Kevin Fries. The specification of the shape of the original was to be precisely retained and, at the same time, the aim was to ensure that also technically met all 21st century requirements. The brilliantly crafted products of Griff Werk offer flexibility and durability within a home or commercial environment, adding style and sophistication to any property. This ingenious range of products offers a complimentary range for glass and wooden doors, by reputable designers like Jette Joop and Sieger Design.

A SOLID PERFORMANCE The Chesney’s Architectural team can create almost anything out of solid stone or marble. Whether it is a bath, a fire-surround, a staircase or a sink, the result is guaranteed to be absolutely stunning. This beautiful stone sink is no exception with its elegant curves and beautiful symmetry. Mark Burns, Director, Chesney ‘s Architectural commented, “I have always been enthused and inspired by great design, in whichever form this may take. Inspiration often comes from various sources; the world around me, an old hand drawing or a picture in a magazine. The inspiration for the 'stamp sink' came from a magazine advertisement for a hotel, which featured an impressive sink within one of its master suites. The following week I came across a beautiful marble that I knew would complement the design perfectly. I wanted the stamp sink to look and feel robust yet elegant, timeless and beautiful; a collectors piece. The perfect synergy of design and materials. I believe we have achieved this. ” www.chesneys.co.uk

JAPANESE TRADITIONS

Cabuchon Bathforms has announced the launch of the Yasahiro, a modern take on the traditional Japanese ofuro and a bath that draws upon more than 20 years' experience at the forefront of deep soaking tub design. The Yasahiro represents the company's fifth generation of deep soaking tubs and, as such, it incorporates everything its designers have learned about comfort, access and utility. Key features include a sculpted back-rest, a low seat that optimises bather comfort, a soft headrest and long integrated armrests. The Yasahiro also boasts a large footwell that makes it suitable for use with overhead or wall-mounted showers. The Yasahiro's seat is lower than in other Cabuchon deep soaking tubs and this has enabled the company to reduce its overall height. The bather can still soak chest-deep in the same depth of water as in previous models but its lower sides make it easier to enter, and an external step is now rendered unnecessary. The Yasahiro can be installed free-standing but its compact dimensions - 1440mm x 850mm (56.75” x 33.5”) - make it especially well suited for use as a corner bath and in smaller bathrooms typical of city apartments, townhouses and boutique hotels. It can also be built into a raised deck or sunk into a floor. 01524 66022 | www.cabuchon.com

ADAPTING WITH LIFE

USM Haller modular furniture is a fantastic storage solution for a child’s room. Not only is it a , but as it is modular the furniture can grow with a family’s changing needs. A sideboard used for storing toys can evolve into a bookshelf perfect for a teenager. The panels can also be changed if the colour scheme of the room changes. The success of USM Haller modular furniture is due to its simple yet ingenious design. From a few simple components a beautiful and practical piece of furniture is built, which has been designed to grow with its environment’s ever changing needs, allowing for individuality and creativity. It is the Swiss precision in which the components are made, that give the furniture the strength, versatility and clean lines that have made USM Haller such an iconic design. Launched onto the market in 1965 the USM Haller system has become a watchword for timeless design all over the World. In 1988 it was decided in Germany for the first time ever that the USM Haller furniture system is a work of applied art and should be protected by copyright. Its acceptance into the Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York (USA) at the end of 2001 was a high distinction and confirmed the artistic character of the product. The design classic is used in offices and public buildings as well as increasingly in the style conscious home. www.usm.com
