Drewes, Ph.D. Curator of Herpetology, Emeritus California Academy of Sciences A Monograph of Usnea from Sao Tome and Principe Miko Rain Abraham Nadel San Francisco, California 2015 A systematic monograph of the lichen genus Usnea from the remote, under-explored islands of Sao Tome and Principe (ST&P) in tropical West Africa is presented, treating 11 species representing 2 subgenera, Usnea and Eumitria. Ten of the 11 species are reported as new for ST&P, including U. firmula, U. baileyi, U. pectinata, U. aff. flammea, U. sanguinea, U. picta, U. krogiana and three undetermined, potentially new species, Usnea species A, B and C. Usnea articulata is confirmed for the main island of Sao Tome. -

HAWKSWORTH Abstract: The phylogenetic relationships of 16 species of Parmelia s. str. are presented based on sequences of nuITS rDNA from 56 specimens, and -tubulin gene sequences from 29 collections. Parmelia serrana sp. nov. a Mediterranean species morphologically very close to P. saxatilis is described. Parmelia ernstiae is the sister-group to P. saxatilis s. str., and a further undescribed North American species of the P. saxatilis complex may require recognition. The isidiate P. squarrosa is closely allied to the sorediate P. sulcata, which is paraphyletic. Japanese samples of P. cochleata form a monophyletic group but too few collections of these were studied to reach firm conclusions regarding their relationships. An epitype is selected for the lectotype of Lichen saxatilis to unequivocally fix the application of that epithet. Macrolichen diversity was first catalogued by Moore (1968), followed by Harris (1990, 1995). “Lichens of North America” also contains photographs and descriptions of many of Florida’s macrolichens (Brodo et al. 2001). The aim of this book is to compliment these other resources and provide more field oriented keys to the macrolichen diversity. We hope to encourage the incorporation of lichens into field oriented ecological studies. Many of the species included in the keys are based lists and information from Harris (1990, 1995). As the result of our modern taxonomic studies, following 19 species were confirmed: Usnea cornuta, U. dasaea, U. dasopoga, U. diffracta, U. diplotypus, U. fragilescens, U. fulvorea- gens, U. glabrata, U. glabrescens, U. intumescens, U. lapponica, U. longissima, U. pangiana, U. praetervisa, U. rubicunda, U. rubrotincta, U. subfloridana, U. trichodeoides and U. wasmuthii, of which U. cornuta, U. dasaea, U. intumescens, U. pangiana, U. praetervisa and U. rubrotincta are new to Russia. Although U. aciculifera, U. articulata, U. barbata, U. bismolliuscula, U. cavernosa and U. mutabilis have been reported from the southern part of Far East Russia, they were not found in our examined specimens, but they were included here in an artificial key to the 25 species recorded for this region.
