Language list German Language of Material German Context Biographical Note Born in Münster, Prussia 1818, died in St. Louis, USA 1866; lieutenant of the Prussian artillery 1839-1845, influenced by Rhenish democracy and Westphalian true socialism; member of the Kommunistische Korrespondenzkomitee, Brussels 1846, cooperated with Marx and Engels; founded similar organizations in Germany; contributed to the Westphälische Dampfboot (O. Lüning); organized workers' societies during the 1848/49 Revolution in Westphalen; edited with Lüning from July 1848 the Neue Deutsche Zeitung; organizer of the Bund der Kommunisten in Germany; emigrated in 1851 to Switzerland and soon after to New York; published Die Revolution; instrumental in the foundation of the American Workers' Union in 1853, editor of its organ Reform; moved to Chicago in 1860; fought against the South during the Civil War. Acquisition These papers were originally part of the historical party-archives of the SPD. The IISH acquired this collection from the SPD in exile in 1938 with financial support of the Centrale Arbeiders- Verzekerings- en Deposito-Bank (the Centrale). The collection, including the papers of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, August Bebel, Eduard Bernstein, and Wilhelm Liebknecht, was mentioned in the Annual Report of 1938 (p. 37-42). The contract was signed 19 May 1938. Content and Structure Content Correspondence with Adolf Cluss 1851-1854, Hermann Meyer 1857-1864 and others (at the Bund der Kommunisten Weydemeyer was known as "Hans"); manuscripts on wages, economic crises in Europe and the USA, in particular in the South; press clippings of his articles from American newspapers and periodicals concerning the political and economic situation in the South (in particular Missouri), tax reform, eight hour movement, votes for blacks, etc.; papers of his wife Luise Weydemeyer-Lüning, his son Otto Weydemeyer, his daughter Laura Livingston-Weydemeyer and of his brother Wilhelm Weydemeyer, mainly correspondence, partly manuscripts. The documents are furthermore labelled with the signatures of the SPD-Parteiarchiv. These signatures are not in use anymore.
