Karma One of the most consistent independent Hip Hop groups of the decade, Kentucky trio CunninLynguists re-release their critically acclaimed sophomore album SouthernUnderground as a two disc deluxe edition. The group, made up of Deacon The Villain, Natti and Kno, aim to make music that reminds listeners why they like Hip Hop in the first place. Backed with quality beats and rhymes, gritty sounds, witty lyrics and low ends that jump out the trunk like Rajon Rondo, the ‘Lynguists recapture the soul in southern Hip Hop, with what Spin Magazine calls “Outkast’s tragicomic poignancy”. SouthernUnderground, originally released independently in 2003, includes features from Masta Ace, Supastition and Tonedeff. Additional production from RJD2 and Domingo, goes hand-in-hand with beats from the main producer Kno, who was once described as “one of the top loop-miners east of the Mississippi” by URB Magazine. -

PUNK AESTHETICS IN INDEPENDENT "NEW FOLK", 1990-2008 John Encarnacao Student No. 10388041 Master of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences University of Technology, Sydney 2009 ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Tony Mitchell for his suggestions for reading towards this thesis (particularly for pointing me towards Webb) and for his reading of, and feedback on, various drafts and nascent versions presented at conferences. Collin Chua was also very helpful during a period when Tony was on leave; thank you, Collin. Tony Mitchell and Kim Poole read the final draft of the thesis and provided some valuable and timely feedback. Cheers. Ian Collinson, Michelle Phillipov and Diana Springford each recommended readings; Zac Dadic sent some hard to find recordings to me from interstate; Andrew Khedoori offered me a show at 2SER-FM, where I learnt about some of the artists in this study, and where I had the good fortune to interview Dawn McCarthy; and Brendan Smyly and Diana Blom are valued colleagues of mine at University of Western Sydney who have consistently been up for robust discussions of research matters. Many thanks to you all. My friend Stephen Creswell’s amazing record collection has been readily available to me and has proved an invaluable resource. A hearty thanks! And most significant has been the support of my partner Zoë. Thanks and love to you for the many ways you helped to create a space where this research might take place. Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists. -

Electric Boys Launch Pledgemusic Campaign for New Album
PRESS RELEASE December 21, 2017. For immediate release Electric Boys launch PledgeMusic campaign for new album Formed in Stockholm in 1988, The Electric Boys were born out of the active '80s Swedish rock scene which took its influences from the 60s psychedelia/ 70s hard rock, and fused it with a modern, big sounding production. Early on, the band achieved notable success on the Swedish charts before setting its sights on the rest of the world. In late 1989, the band entered Little Mountain Sound Studio (Aerosmith, AC/DC, Metallica, Mötley Crüe, David Lee Roth) to begin work on their debut album, Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride, with respected producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi, The Cult, Mötley Crüe). The critically acclaimed album spawned the Billboard Top 20 single, All Lips N' Hips, and quickly established the band as a force to be reckoned with. After months of solid touring in support of Funk-O-Metal Carpet Ride the band reconvened in studio to record follow-up Groovus Maximus which gave the band another Billboard Top 30 single with the song, Mary In The Mystery World, and landed the band at #7 on the Official Swedish Charts. As the album's touring cycle got into full swing the band found the time to contribute a track to the ABBA: The Tribute record. In 1994, the band released Freewheelin' which peaked at #16 on the Official Swedish Album Chart, but would ultimately announce a Farewell show for later in the year in Stockholm. Guitarist singer, Conny Bloom, as well as bassist Andy Christell would go on to play in Hanoi Rocks featuring Michael Monroe. -
