INTRODUCTION The extreme quarantine and lockdown measures have quickly become the new normal for us all. The direct impact on event attendance across entertainment and sports has caused many businesses to rethink how they can engage with their target audiences during this time. Fortnite, the online video game, has adapted to these circumstances and reinvented the concept of aggregation. Epic Games, in collaboration with Travis Scott, organized a unique musical journey inspired by the artist's influences and created from scratch within Fortnite: Astronomical. Epic Games planned a multi-date tour, with times suitable for players from all over the world, in which Travis Scott also performed a world preview song. The American artist attracted millions of people, who all tuned in via the game, in addition to various other video streaming platforms such as Youtube and Twitch, which also allowed viewers to watch the performances. As an example, the average minute audience (AMA) for this event on Epic Games’ official Twitch channel reached a total of 4.7M, with roughly half of that (2.3M) coming from live viewers during the initial event. Besides being at the forefront of reinventing entertainment formats, Fortnite continues to be a highly lucrative and well-known game. It made $1.8B* in 2019, and in Q1 2020 it remained as one of the highest- grossing and well-known gaming titles in the United States. Between March and April console and PC revenue grew 106% and the game hit an all-time high awareness level amongst the gaming community (92% awareness in the US**) showing that the event paid off. -

Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists. -

Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering University of Washington Abstract Better Education Through Improved Reinforcement Learning Travis Scott Mandel Co-Chairs of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Zoran Popovi´c University of Washington Assistant Professor Emma Brunskill Stanford University When a new student comes to play an educational game, how can we determine what content to give them such that they learn as much as possible? When a frustrated customer calls in to a helpline, how can we determine what to say to best assist them? When an ill patient comes in to the clinic, how do we determine what tests to run and treatments to give to maximize their quality of life? These problems, though diverse, are all a seemingly natural choice for reinforcement learning, where an AI agent learns from experience how to make a sequence of decisions to maximize some reward signal. However, unlike many recent successes of reinforcement learning, in these settings the agent gains experience solely by interacting with humans (e.g. game players or patients). As a result, although the potential to directly impact human lives is much greater, intervening to collect new data is often expensive and potentially risky. Therefore, in this thesis I present several methods that allow us to evaluate candidate learning approaches offline using previously-collected data instead of actually deploying them. -

From the SelectedWorks of Katrina Wu Spring 2016 YouTube Marketing: Legality of Sponsorship and Endorsement in Advertising Katrina Wu, University of San Diego Available at: http://works.bepress.com/katrina_wu/2/ YOUTUBE MARKETING: LEGALITY OF SPONSORSHIP AND ENDORSEMENTS IN ADVERTISING Katrina Wua1 Abstract YouTube endorsement marketing, sometimes referred to as native advertising, is a form of marketing where advertisements are seamlessly incorporated into the video content unlike traditional commercials. This paper categorizes YouTube endorsement marketing into three forms: (1) direct sponsorship where the content creator partners with the sponsor to create videos, (2) affiliated links where the content creator gets a commission resulting from purchases attributable to the content creator, and (3) free product sampling where products are sent to content creators for free to be featured in a video. Examples in each of the three forms of YouTube marketing can be observed across virtually all genres of video, such as beauty/fashion, gaming, culinary, and comedy. There are four major stakeholder interests at play—the YouTube content creators, viewers, YouTube, and the companies—and a close examination upon the interplay of these interests supports this paper’s argument that YouTube marketing is trending and effective but urgently needs transparency. The effectiveness of YouTube marketing is demonstrated through a hypothetical example in the paper involving a cosmetics company providing free product sampling for a YouTube content creator. Calculations in the hypothetical example show impressive return on investment for such marketing maneuver. Companies and YouTube content creators are subject to disclosure requirements under Federal law if the content is an endorsement as defined by the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”). -

Capturing the tone, celebrating the work A conversAtion with wendy rogers And SarA rudner introduced by LisA KrAus dATE: September 29, 2007 pLACE: PaneL room, the pew center for Arts & heritAge Lisa Kraus: It’s my honor to say a few words before Sara Rudner and Wendy Rogers speak to us and show video examples of the work they made together. I want to begin by mentioning a “behind the scenes” moment I just witnessed: Wendy was chatting with Sara about something she had been observing. I have no idea what it was. But it was so moving to her that she had to get up and demonstrate. Not only demonstrate, but also run around in a circle. And then Sara doubled over in laughter. They were looking at each other like there was no one on the planet they would rather be talking to. And I believe that’s why we’re here. The first thing that comes to mind is the year 1975. That was when Sara put together her five-hour project, Dancing-on-View (see Appendix A), which we’re going to see a sample of on tape. This project premiered in 1975, with Wendy as a participant. Just this past spring [2007], another version of the piece was performed at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City.
