The second chapterlooks at the prehistory of Indian culture to see the ways in which Indianpeoples learned to exploit the land. The excavations ofan Indian camp site at Green Point, Michigan, are described, including discussionof the dig, findings, and changes in Indian life from S00-1700A.D. Chapter three recounts Indian-white relations during 1600-1900 inorder to explore what happened when a stone-age culture facedan acquisitive white culture that was more highly developed and hadmore resources. The Iroquois Indians in the northeastserve as an example of how Indian life patterns were destroyed by European, occupationof America. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

DEVELOPMENT OF MUSICAL IDEAS IN COMPOSITIONS BY TORTOISE Reiner Krämer Prologue For more than 25 years, the Chicago-based experimental rock band Tortoise has crossed over multiple popular music genres (ambient music, krautrock, dub, electronica, drums and bass, reggae, etc.) as well as different types of jazz music, and has made use of minimalist Western art music.1 The group is often labeled a pioneer of the »post-rock« genre. Allegedly, Simon Reynolds first used the term in his review of the album Hex by the English east Lon- don band Bark Psychosis (Reynolds 1994a) and shortly afterwards in his arti- cle »Shaking the Rock Narcotic« (Reynolds 1994b: 28-32). In connection to Tortoise he used »post-rock« in his review article of their 1996 album Mil- lions Now Living Will Never Die (Reynolds 1996). Reynolds describes music he labels as ›post-rock‹ where bands use guitars »in [non-rock] ways« to manipulate »timbre and texture rather than riff[s]« and »augment rock's basic guitar-bass-drums lineup with digital technology such as samplers and sequencers« (Reynolds 2017: 509). Most members of Tortoise act as multi- instrumentalists that play different combinations of instruments at different times. As Jeanette Leech (2017: 16) has stated, a typical Tortoise stage set- up can feature vibraphones, marimbas, two drum sets, and a multitude of synthesizers. With regards to the instrumental setup Leech draws up paral- lels with progressive rock of the 1970s but points to one decisive difference within the genres: »for Tortoise, the range of instrumentation [is] about creating mood, not showboating« (ibid.). -

Originally released by Ace in 1974 In 1973 I was sharing a one-room bedsit in Camden with my girlfriend (now my wife) Kathy. The band I’d been with for the last 5 years since leaving home and going on the road had finally returned from Germany broke after having our equipment stolen. I reluctantly got a job cleaning cars at Henley’s Cars for the princely sum of 42 pence an hour. When the initial novelty of doing ‘real work’ with overalls and everything, wore off (after about a week) I was thoroughly miserable, apart from the fact that Kathy and I were madly in love. At some point I got a call from Tex Comer, the bass player in the aforementioned band. -
