Discography of the Prestige Labels Robert S. Weinstock started the New Jazz label in 1949 in New York City. The Prestige label was started shortly afterwards. Originaly the labels were located at 446 West 50th Street, in 1950 the company was moved to 782 Eighth Avenue. Prestige made a couple more moves in New York City but by 1958 it was located at its more familiar address of 203 South Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Prestige recorded jazz, folk and rhythm and blues. The New Jazz label issued jazz and was used for a few 10 inch album releases in 1954 and then again for as series of 12 inch albums starting in 1958 and continuing until 1964. The artists on New Jazz were interchangeable with those on the Prestige label and after 1964 the New Jazz label name was dropped. Early on, Weinstock used various New York City recording studios including Nola and Beltone, but he soon started using the Rudy van Gelder studio in Hackensack New Jersey almost exclusively. Rudy van Gelder moved his studio to Englewood Cliffs New Jersey in 1959, which was close to the Prestige office in Bergenfield. Producers for the label, in addition to Weinstock, were Chris Albertson, Ozzie Cadena, Esmond Edwards, Ira Gitler, Cal Lampley Bob Porter and Don Schlitten. Rudy van Gelder engineered most of the Prestige recordings of the 1950’s and 60’s. The line-up of jazz artists on Prestige was impressive, including Gene Ammons, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Art Farmer, Red Garland, Wardell Gray, Richard “Groove” Holmes, Milt Jackson and the Modern Jazz Quartet, “Brother” Jack McDuff, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, Don Patterson, Sonny Rollins, Shirley Scott, Sonny Stitt and Mal Waldron. Prestige also licensed material from European labels including Metronome in Sweden, Gramophone and Ultraphone in France and MPS in Germany. They also licensed material from a few American jazz labels including Argo and Progressive. Prestige was located in Bergenfield New Jersey until 1971 when the label was sold to Fantasy Records and the label was moved to San Francisco California. Prestige established many subsidiary labels, including Bluesville, Folklore, International, Irish, Lively Arts, Moodsville, Near East, Swingville and Tru-Sound. The subsidiarys and their period of operation are given below. The Bluesville label subsidiary was formed in 1960 and released albums into 1964. Bluesville label was used for releases of blues music. The Bluesville label had some of the better American blues artists, including Lonnie Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry, Roosevelt Sykes, Memphis Slim and K.C. Douglas. In most cases the material on Bluesville was more jazz influenced then blues recorded on other labels. The Folklore subsidiary was formed in 1963 and released albums in both 1963 and 1964. The Folklore label issued folk and blues albums. Artists on the label included Dave Van Ronk, Eric Von Schmidt, Geoff Muldaur, Jesse Fuller, Bonnie Dobson, Jean Ritchie and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. The International label was formed in 1960 and issued albums until 1964. The International label was used for folk music and music from other countries. The Irish label subsidiary was formed in 1962 and released albums in 1962 and 1963. The Irish label was used to release Irish music. The Lively Arts subsidiary was formed in 1961 and released albums until 1963. The Lively Arts label was used for spoken word records. The Moodsville subsidiary was formed in 1960 and released albums until 1963. The Moodsville label was used for jazz releases. The Near East subsidiary was formed in 1962 and released albums in 1962 and 1963. The Near East Label released music from Greece and Turkey. The Swingville subsidiary was formed in 1959 and issued albums into 1963. The Swingville label was used for jazz releases. The Tru-Sound label subsidiary was formed in 1961 and released albums into 1963. The Tru-Sound label recorded rhythm and blues, jazz, gospel and Latin-American music. Artists on Tru Sound included King Curtis and Buddy Lucas. After 1964 the subsidiary labels were discontinued and all new album releases were on the Prestige label itself. Prestige had an extensive reissue program and many of their albums were reissued multiple times. Albums originally on the subsidiary labels were reissued on Prestige. We have tried to indicate the original source album (label and number) for reissues although this listing is probably not comprehensive. This discography includes the album releases on New Jazz, Prestige and subsidiary labels Bluesville, Folklore, International, Irish, Lively Arts, Moodsville, Near East, Swingville and Tru-Sound. This discography does not cover the Status label although it’s known that some of the Prestige and subsidiary label albums were reissued using this label. The relationship between Status and Prestige is unknown to us. This Prestige Label discography was compiled using Schwann catalogs from 1950 to 1982, Phonolog from 1963, The Complete Library of American Phonograph Recordings (1958-1968) by Jerry Osborne, The Jazz Discography Project Website (http://www.jazzdisco.org), The American Record Label Directory and Dating Guide, 1940-1959 by Galen Gart, The Prestige Label: A Discography by Michael Ruppli and my record collection. Tracks are listed in order they appear on the albums, when known and the double slash (//) is indication of the separation between sides. Titles listed without a double slash (//) are listed as printed in the Phono-Log or Schwann catalog New Entries listing, and the separation between side one and side two is unknown.
