E passa a assinar Karl Valentin. • Karl Valentin's Illogical Subversion: Issues Arising from Das Aquarium and Liesl Karlstadt's Verein Der Katzenfreunde
Oliver Double & Michael Wilson Karl Valentin's illogical subversion: issues arising from Das Aquarium and Liesl Karlstadt's Verein der Katzenfreunde Valentin Ludwig Fey was born on 4 June 1882 in the Munich suburb of Au, effectively the only child of an artisan-class family – his sister and two brothers all died in early childhood before Valentin Ludwig was even six months old. Valentin himself only narrowly survived a childhood encounter with diptheria (all of which, perhaps unsurprisingly, contributed to his ever-increasing hypochondria1), but he went on to become Karl Valentin, arguably the most famous German comedian and cabaret performer of his generation. Popular Entertainment in Munich The popular entertainment scene in Munich in the early years of the twentieth century was a vibrant mix of the traditional Volkssänger culture, Salonhumoristen and the more overtly political cabaret established by figures like Frank Wedekind and frequented by the Bohemian intellectual community. Volkssänger is a notoriously difficult word to translate in this context. Literally meaning „folksinger‟ (the term preferred by Robert Eben Sackett in his book Popular Entertainment, Class, and Politics in Munich, 1900- 19232 it is important not to equate these performers with the agrarian working-class amateur singers who acted as the informants of the great folksong collectors such as Cecil Sharpe or Sabine Baring-Gould in England, nor with the professional musicians who emerged from the „folk revival‟ of the 1950s and 1960s. The Volkssänger was a popular entertainer who „came from the common people (…) lived among them and knew what troubled their hearts‟3 and a more useful comparison would be with the artists of the British Music Hall.

• Research Opportunities in Munich Yvonne Shafer
FALL 1991 235 Research Opportunities in Munich Yvonne Shafer Munich is both a theatrical city and a city with a great deal of theatre. Throughout the city are interesting theatre buildings, important theatre collections, museums with theatrical material, and statues relating to theatre. The theatres, their archives, and theatre collections are accessible and public transportation in Munich is excellent. Theatre ranges from puppet shows to the classics-indeed, one can see Faust performed as a puppet show as Goethe first intended it. In the handsome theatre lobbies, there is an air of excitement and sophistication as the theatre-goers drink champagne and discuss the performances. The audiences are very responsive: they laugh a great deal in plays received very earnestly in America, applaud thunderously when a play is good, and boo long and loud when they do not care for a production. In order to give a picture of theatre research opportunities various types of productions will be described, followed by a discussion of the theatre museums and several of the famous theatres in the city. In May 1991 there were several dozen plays, ballets, operas and other theatrical performances from which to choose. There are major subsidized theatres and opera houses, small commercial theatres, theatres for children, and experimental groups. A range of plays available on a given night included Entertaining Mr. Sloane, The Threepenny Opera, Cooney and Chapman's Not Now, Darling, Durrenmatt's The Accident, and Jesus Christ Superstar. There were performances of a British science-fiction comedy presented by the Action Theatre London (in English) called Black Magic-Blue Love, a Psychothriller Murder Voices, and an evening of song and acting in the OFF-OFF-Theater Club.

• Bertolt Brecht - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Bertolt Brecht - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Bertolt Brecht(10 February 1898 – 14 August 1956) Eugen Berthold Friedrich Brecht; was a German poet, playwright, and theatre director. An influential theatre practitioner of the 20th century, Brecht made equally significant contributions to dramaturgy and theatrical production, the latter particularly through the seismic impact of the tours undertaken by the Berliner Ensemble — the post-war theatre company operated by Brecht and his wife, long-time collaborator and actress Helene Weigel. Life and Career Bavaria (1898–1924) Bertolt Brecht was born in Augsburg, Bavaria, (about 50 miles (80 km) north- west of Munich) to a conventionally-devout Protestant mother and a Catholic father (who had been persuaded to have a Protestant wedding). His father worked for a paper mill, becoming its managing director in 1914. Thanks to his mother's influence, Brecht knew the Bible, a familiarity that would impact on his writing throughout his life. From her, too, came the "dangerous image of the self-denying woman" that recurs in his drama. Brecht's home life was comfortably middle class, despite what his occasional attempt to claim peasant origins implied. At school in Augsburg he met Caspar Neher, with whom he formed a lifelong creative partnership, Neher designing many of the sets for Brecht's dramas and helping to forge the distinctive visual iconography of their epic theatre. When he was 16, the First World War broke out. Initially enthusiastic, Brecht soon changed his mind on seeing his classmates "swallowed by the army".

He didn't want the actor to awaken the illusion that he suffered or was in agony and-to a certain extent-he didn't want the actor to "sink into a role" . And that's what I find remarkable: that he completely ac- cepted me as an actor, while I have been my whole life long an actor who becomes the role, who immerses himself in the part, in pain, or in agony, or whatever there is to present. It's remarkable that I never played in the manner he wanted, and yet he accepted me entirely in my acting method. Erwin Faber Brecht loved the actor above all else. He went so far as to say that in an age where there are no longer great actors, there are no good dramatists.

• Brecht and Cabaret
3 OLIVER DOUBLE AND MICHAEL WILSON Brecht and cabaret One of the most popular anecdotes about Brecht’s early years in Munich involves a significant encounter with the popular comedian Karl Valentin (1882–1948). In October 1922, following on from the success the previous month of the première of Drums in the Night at the Munich Kammerspiele, Brecht was appointed to the dramaturgical team of the theatre and was immediately given the task of rewriting and adapting Marlowe’s Edward II. The writing took place over the winter of 1922/3, but the eight-week rehearsal period, then the longest in the Kammerspiele’s history, did not start until January 1924. In one of his conversations with the essayist and critic Walter Benjamin on 29 June 1938, Brecht told the story of how ‘the idea of Epic Theatre first came into his head’ at one of these rehearsals: The battle in the play is supposed to occupy the stage for three-quarters of an hour. Brecht couldn’t stage manage the soldiers, and neither could Asya [Lacis], his production assistant. Finally he turned in despair to Karl Valentin, at that time one of his closest friends, who was attending the rehearsal, and asked him: ‘Well, what is it? What’s the truth about these soldiers? What about them?’ Valentin: ‘They’re pale, they’re scared, that’s what!’ The remark settled the issue, Brecht adding: ‘They’re tired.’ Whereupon the soldiers’ faces were thickly made up with chalk, and that was the day the production’s style was determined.1 A few years later, Brecht himself wrote a version of the same story in The Messingkauf Dialogues: ‘When the Augsburger was producing his first play, which included a thirty minutes’ battle, he asked Valentin what he ought to do with the soldiers.

Chosen from the twenty-nine surviving silent and sound films in which Valentin appeared between 1913 and 1941, the films in the exhibition KARL VALENTIN: SILENT FILMS reveal his kin ship to film comedians Laurel and Hardy, W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, and Charlie Chaplin, as well as to dramatists Samuel Beckett and Bertolt Brecht. As Michael Schulte wrote in Karl Valentins Filme, "Karl Valentin is the Marx Brothers in one. He unites Groucho's cynicism with Chico's virtuoso slapstick and Harpo's poetry." Valentin began his career during the first decade of this century performing self-com posed texts in Munich pubs, where he captured the attention of local music hall directors. Al though he never formally studied acting, he appeared in and directed pieces that he wrote for the stage, often joined by his partner Lies! Karlstadt. He recognized the importance of film, particularly for comedy, and in the wery early twenties he collaborated with Brecht and Erich Engel on Mysterian eines Frisiersalons/Mysteries of a Barbershop, which is included in the MoMA program.

• Designing the 'Umvolkung' Nazi Social Anthropology
ACTA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE – HISTORIA UNIVERSITATIS CAROLINAE PRAGENSIS 2014 Tomus LIV. Fasc. 1 Pag. 23–54 DESIGNING THE ‘UMVOLKUNG’ NAZI SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY (SOZIALANTHROPOLOGIE) – KARL VALENTIN MÜLLER AND HIS CONCEPT OF ETHNIC RE-ENGINEERING, 1940–1945 URSULA FERDINAND ABSTRACT Karl Valentin Müller (1896–1963), an amateur researcher, published his first papers on the synthesis of ‘social’ and ‘racial’ issues in the tradition of German Sozialanthropologie around 1930. A decade later, the former mem- ber of the German Social Democratic Party had already become a prominent expert on Nazi population policy and Umvolkung. In 1941 he was appointed professor at the newly established Institute of Social Anthropology and Volk Biology (Institut für Sozialanthropologie und Volksbiologie) at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Ger- man University in Prague. His professional advancement was strongly supported by high SD and SS officials. In Prague he presented his programme of Umvolkung, or ethnic re-engineering, which was based on the idea of reorganising the national composition of the population in Central and South Eastern Europe. The programme was grounded in Müller’s own theories of Umvolkung with special focus on Bohemia and Moravia. After the Second World War, he became head of the Institute for Research on Intellectual Giftedness (Institut für Be- gabtenforschung) in Hannover. Later, Müller was appointed professor of empirical sociology at the University of Economic and Social Sciences in Nuremberg and became an active representative of Sozialanthropologie in the early Federal Republic of Germany. Müller never abandoned his basic assumptions, which were rooted in his convictions regarding heredity and racial biology and supported by an eclectic methodological mix.

• Brecht Between Mediums Kristin M. Seifert a Dissertation Submitted
Brecht Between Mediums Kristin M. Seifert A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of philosophy University of Washington 2019 Reading committee: Stefka Mihaylova, chair Jennifer Bean, co-chair Scott Magelssen Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of Drama ©Copyright 2019 Kristin Seifert University of Washington Abstract Brecht Between Mediums Kristin M. Seifert Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Stefka Mihaylova Department of Drama Is Epic theory solely applicable to live performance? Was German writer and director Bertolt Brecht a champion for the theatre and theatre alone? This dissertation combines analysis of live and recorded performance, historical analysis, Epic theory, film and media theory in order to discuss Brecht’s shifting relationship with film and other multi-medium performance traditions. The historic and theoretical exploration of Brecht both influencing and being influenced by cinematic work seeks to reclaim him as a multi-medium artist and explore a kind of continual flow of Epic theory and technique not merely between Brecht’s cinematic and stage projects but also in the work of his contemporaries, fellow exiled artists during World War II, and a direct line of cinematic careers shaped, to this day, by the Brechtian legacy. The larger scope of this case study questions the allocation of artists, like Brecht, into disciplines and troubles the existing medium-disciplinary hierarchies-separations that negatively affect the ways in which performance is created, viewed and studied. This dissertation, therefore, more broadly examines the segregation of the performing arts within the academic world and scholarly research that maintains a staunchly medium-specific approach that fails to recognize the endless stream of theories and methods that circulate between performance mediums.
