  • Nonlinear Hedonic Pricing: a Confirmatory Study of South African Wines
International Journal of Wine Research Dovepress open access to scientific and medical research Open Access Full Text Article ORIGINAL RESEARCH Nonlinear hedonic pricing: a confirmatory study of South African wines David A Priilaid1 Abstract: With a sample of South African red and white wines, this paper investigates the Paul van Rensburg2 relationship between price, value, and value for money. The analysis is derived from a suite of regression models using some 1358 wines drawn from the 2007 period, which, along with red 1School of Management Studies, 2Department of Finance and Tax, and white blends, includes eight cultivars. Using the five-star rating, each wine was rated both University of Cape Town, sighted and blind by respected South African publications. These two ratings were deployed in Republic of South Africa a stripped-down customer-facing hedonic price analysis that confirms (1) the unequal pricing of consecutive increments in star-styled wine quality assessments and (2) that the relationship between value and price can be better estimated by treating successive wine quality increments as dichotomous “dummy” variables. Through the deployment of nonlinear hedonic pricing, For personal use only. fertile areas for bargain hunting can thus be found at the top end of the price continuum as much as at the bottom, thereby assisting retailers and consumers in better identifying wines that offer value for money. Keywords: price, value, wine Introduction Within economics, “hedonics” is defined as the pleasure, utility, or efficacy derived through the consumption of a particular good or service; the hedonic model thereby proposes a market of assorted products with a range of associated price, quality, and characteristic differences and a diverse population of consumers, each with a varying propensity to pay for certain attribute assemblages.

Dry Creek Road Healdsburg ~ California Located in the Dry Creek Valley AVA 5850 Anderson Rd, Forestville, CA 95436 www.bergmanvineyards.com PH: (707) 887-9822; FX: (866) 691-5251 Page 1 of 7 RAYMOND BURR VINEYARDS A Historical Perspective It was in the middle 1950’s on the widely acclaimed and successful television program “Perry Mason” that the two actors, Raymond Burr and Robert Benevides first met. Their friendship grew and advanced as their mutual interest in the knowledge of the cultivation and hybridization of orchids developed. Their mutual hobby began to grow in importance to them and the next logical step was to make it into a commercial venture. At the same time, Benevides had become Executive in Charge of Production for Mr. Burr’s very successful and long (8 years) running television series, “Ironside”. The two men purchased an island in Fiji where they raised coconuts and cattle and helped bring up the standard of living for the Fijian people who lived on the island. In 1976, Robert Benevides’ father, attracted by the beauty of the Dry Creek Valley and the special qualities of land with its productive soils, purchased portions of the existing Raymond Burr Vineyard Estate. Years later, Robert and Raymond planted vines on their lovely estate in 1986. Their first wines were made in 1990 under the direction of John Pedroncelli, who together with his brother, Jim, owned the Pedroncelli Winery off Canyon Road. The Raymond Burr label started in 1998. A reasonable price was set for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines, and over the years, prices for their Estate wines have remained the same as the original releases.

  • Many Readers Will Have Visited Sonoma County in Northern California Wine Country and Sampled the Zinfandels Made in the SubRegion Named Dry Creek Valley
Many readers will have visited Sonoma County in northern California wine country and sampled the Zinfandels made in the subregion named Dry Creek Valley. The 70+ wineries there are so small (median production is only about 4750 cases) that most sell all that they make at the “cellar door” (either in a tasting room or through Internet orders). Additionally, 150 grape growers sell fruit to these winemakers and another 80+ wineries besides. This direct sales link is vital to small wineries as it vastly reduces their costs of distribution. One result, is that there are many good wines that do not make their way onto retail shelves here, or do so only at a restricted set of outlets (basically the finer wine stores in town). To taste the gamut of Dry Creek wine making you really need to visit the area (and the ideal time is the weekend known as Passport To Dry Creek Valley each April). Notwithstanding that, sometimes the growers go out to their customers. This month, the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley brought several Dry Creek Valley winemakers to Dallas and I was fortunate to be a guest at their media event. Overall, the quality of their signature grape, Zinfandel, is higher than ever, with the overalcoholic overextracted sweet style of a decade ago replaced with wines that, while certainly bristling with power, also have complexity and the alcohol and sweetness in balance with each other and the other components. In a telling change from that ‘other’ style — these wines age. Examples from 2001 and 2004 exhibited resolved flavors and reassuring but approachable tannins that young Zinfandel usually lacks.

  • Left Bank Napa Valley 2018
Left Bank Napa Valley 2018 WINEMAKER NOTES 2018 was a dream growing season and harvest for Napa Valley. An abundance of rain in February was followed by continuous days of sunshine and mild temperatures that made for uniform vines and even cluster growth. With no major heat spikes to contend with, there was no need to rush through harvest. Cooler temperatures allowed us to pick when we wanted, without stress and under optimal conditions. The gift from Mother Nature translated to wines that not only have great concentration but also an amazing freshness. ABOUT THE VINEYARD Our winemakers, influenced by their winemaking experience in the heralded region of Bordeaux, blended five distinct varietals most commonly used in Médoc in deliberate proportions for our Left Bank Napa Valley 2018. The Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in this wine, hails from a variety of appellations, including St. Helena, Rutherford, Atlas Peak, Oakville and Yountville. Each sub-AVA brings its own unique terroir and characteristics, thus allowing our winemakers to craft a wine with complex and rich aromatics and lingering flavors.
