Their friendship grew and advanced as their mutual interest in the knowledge of the cultivation and hybridization of orchids developed. Their mutual hobby began to grow in importance to them and the next logical step was to make it into a commercial venture. At the same time, Benevides had become Executive in Charge of Production for Mr. Burr’s very successful and long (8 years) running television series, “Ironside”. The two men purchased an island in Fiji where they raised coconuts and cattle and helped bring up the standard of living for the Fijian people who lived on the island. In 1976, Robert Benevides’ father, attracted by the beauty of the Dry Creek Valley and the special qualities of land with its productive soils, purchased portions of the existing Raymond Burr Vineyard Estate. Years later, Robert and Raymond planted vines on their lovely estate in 1986. Their first wines were made in 1990 under the direction of John Pedroncelli, who together with his brother, Jim, owned the Pedroncelli Winery off Canyon Road. The Raymond Burr label started in 1998. A reasonable price was set for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines, and over the years, prices for their Estate wines have remained the same as the original releases. In 2005, a local winemaking star, Phyllis Zouzounis, took over winemaking duties for the Raymond Burr Wines. She remained with Robert through the last crush in 2013. Phyllis has her own successful label, Deux Amis Wines. The Raymond Burr Wine Club has approximately 800 members. Wines are sold direct to consumers. Approximately 2,500 cases of wine are sold annually through the tasting room and wine club. A decision was made in 2013 to make that year the last year that wines were to be made under the Raymond Burr label. After reaching his 85th birthday, Robert Benevides decided to sell his magnificent vineyard estate. 5850 Anderson Rd, Forestville, CA 95436 www.bergmanvineyards.com PH: (707) 887-9822; FX: (866) 691-5251 Page 2 of 7 RAYMOND BURR VINEYARDS Property Profile Address: 8339 W Dry Creek Rd, Healdsburg; APN 139-090-051; 9.39 acres 8391 W Dry Creek Rd, Healdsburg; APN 139-160-020; 11.37 acres 8521 W Dry Creek Rd, Healdsburg; APN 139-150-040; 12.67 acres Total Acres 33.43 Zoning: LIA (Land Intensive Agriculture); 40 acre minimum; SR and Z overlays Utilities: PG&E electricity; propane; satellite TV; Internet service available; solar Water: Well located on a neighboring property reportedly producing 50 gpm. A total of 14.42 acres were planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (clone 7), Chardonnay (Wente and Dijon clones), Cabernet Franc and 4 Portuguese Port varieties (Tinta Cao, Tinta Madeira, Touriga Nacional and Sousao). The original rootstock for all varieties was AXR. Subsequent plantings in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002, because of phylloxera, used rootstock 110R and 1103. In 2005 an acres of Cabernet Sauvignon was removed and replaced with one acre of Cabernet Franc on 110R rootstock. In 2006 2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon were removed and replaced with 1 acre of Malbec and 1 acre of Petite Verdot. Both were on 110R rootstock. Spacing was accomplished according to “General Viticulture” page 244. Vines were planted 6 feet apart and rows were spaced 12 feet apart. Trellising for the Chardonnay has a system of quadruple cordons and for the reds, double cordons. Wires are in place on all varieties to support the canopy. All vines are on a drip irrigation system. Two 10,000 gallon concrete tanks, in the middle of the vineyard, supply all of the vines with water. Two wells are in place. The well presently in use, with a 10 horsepower submersible pump, needs to be rehabilitated. Originally the 4 Portuguese varieties were planted in a field blend in equal amounts. But over the past 28 years the Sousao has been slowly replaced with Tinta Roriz because the Sousao did not ripen along with the other varieties. The present two year contract on the Cabernet Sauvignon is for a maximum of 25 tons @ $2,500 per ton. The contract on the Cabernet Franc is for a maximum of 12 tons @ $2,600 per ton. The contracts for the Malbec (7-9 tons) and Petite Verdot (3-4 tons) are @ $1,800 per ton. Offered at $ 6,295,000 5850 Anderson Rd, Forestville, CA 95436 www.bergmanvineyards.com PH: (707) 887-9822; FX: (866) 691-5251 Page 7 of 7 .

8/15/2019 How Netflix Reverse-Engineered Hollywood - The Atlantic TECHNOLOGY How Netflix Reverse-Engineered Hollywood To understand how people look for movies, the video service created 76,897 micro-genres. We took the genre descriptions, broke them down to their key words … and built our own new-genre generator. ALEXIS C. MADRIGAL JAN 2, 2014 The Atlantic's Netflix-Genre Generator Independent Mad-Scientist Secret Society Mockumentaries For Ages 11 to 12 CREATE A GENRE: Gonzo (ultraniche genres) Hollywood (film-making cliches) Netflix (mimicking their style) If you use Netflix, you've probably wondered about the specific genres that it suggests to you. Some of them just seem so specific that it's absurd. Emotional Fight-the-System Documentaries? Period Pieces About Royalty Based on Real Life? Foreign Satanic Stories from the 1980s? If Netflix can show such tiny slices of cinema to any given user, and they have 40 million users, how vast did their set of "personalized genres" need to be to describe the entire Hollywood universe? This idle wonder turned to rabid fascination when I realized that I could capture each and every microgenre that Netflix's algorithm has ever created. Through a combination of elbow grease and spam-level repetition, we discovered that Netflix possesses not several hundred genres, or even several thousand, but 76,897 unique ways to describe types of movies. There are so many that just loading, copying, and pasting all of them took the little script I wrote more than 20 hours. We've now spent several weeks understanding, analyzing, and reverse-engineering how Netflix's vocabulary and grammar work.

His researches seem to them a waste of time and energy. Interest in ancestors, love of family and kindred, those subtle questions of race, origin, even of life itself, which they involve, are quite beyond their com prehension. They live only in the present, care nothing for the past and little for the future; for " he who cares not whence he cometh, cares not whither he goeth." When such persons are approached with questions of ancestry, they retire to their stronghold of apathy; and the querist learns, without diffi culty, that whether their ancestors were vile or illustrious, virtuous or vicious, or whether, indeed, they ever had any, is to them a matter of supreme indifference.

  • Many Readers Will Have Visited Sonoma County in Northern California Wine Country and Sampled the Zinfandels Made in the SubRegion Named Dry Creek Valley
Many readers will have visited Sonoma County in northern California wine country and sampled the Zinfandels made in the subregion named Dry Creek Valley. The 70+ wineries there are so small (median production is only about 4750 cases) that most sell all that they make at the “cellar door” (either in a tasting room or through Internet orders). Additionally, 150 grape growers sell fruit to these winemakers and another 80+ wineries besides. This direct sales link is vital to small wineries as it vastly reduces their costs of distribution. One result, is that there are many good wines that do not make their way onto retail shelves here, or do so only at a restricted set of outlets (basically the finer wine stores in town). To taste the gamut of Dry Creek wine making you really need to visit the area (and the ideal time is the weekend known as Passport To Dry Creek Valley each April). Notwithstanding that, sometimes the growers go out to their customers. This month, the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley brought several Dry Creek Valley winemakers to Dallas and I was fortunate to be a guest at their media event. Overall, the quality of their signature grape, Zinfandel, is higher than ever, with the overalcoholic overextracted sweet style of a decade ago replaced with wines that, while certainly bristling with power, also have complexity and the alcohol and sweetness in balance with each other and the other components. In a telling change from that ‘other’ style — these wines age. Examples from 2001 and 2004 exhibited resolved flavors and reassuring but approachable tannins that young Zinfandel usually lacks.

  • 2011 HARVEST UPDATE: Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley® Positive Despite Rains
2011 HARVEST UPDATE: Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley® Positive Despite Rains October 17, 2011 – Healdsburg, CA: Hit by unexpectedly heavy rains that showered Sonoma County and most of California throughout early October, Dry Creek Valley winegrowers remain positive about the vintage, especially for its two signature grape varieties: Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc. Due to the wet spring and cool summer, Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc yields were light but resulted in optimal fruit. Duff Bevill, a long-time Dry Creek Valley grower and Managing Partner at Bevill Vineyard Management, commented, “We picked 99% of our Sauvignon Blanc before the rains, and quality was outstanding. We had a long, cool growing season like 2010, which resulted in incredible fruit. Some of my buyers told me this year’s Sauvignon Blanc was the best quality fruit they could remember.” Dubbing the vintage an “A+ for Sauvignon Blanc,” Bevill was also optimistic about Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, remarking, “At the north end of the valley, we picked all of the Zinfandel before the rain. It’s warmer there than at the southern end, so we saw really good flavor profiles and maturity. At the southern end, we picked a little early for some winemakers’ preference, but I think we timed it just right and let it hang as long as possible. We were right on the line, finishing picking just as it started to drizzle.” Lambert Bridge winemaker, Jill Davis, was equally positive about her white wines, calling the Viognier “stupendous” and commenting, “The Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah came in ripe and delicious – all before the first rain.
