David has a long history of winemaking at high end wineries in the Napa Valley including Robert Mondavi Winery and Whitehall Lane. He paid tribute to his parents with the name of this winery – Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. He started this winery when he was working for other wineries and as a result started small and worked part time. When you combine excellent wines with creative labeling you are bound to grow fast and now his full time job is with Orin Swift. The Blend: Petite Sirah, Syrah, & Grenache Petite Sirah is a revered grape varietal at Orin Swift. Since 2000, it has been made and utilized primarily as a blending component due to scarcity. Unlike its celebrated relative Syrah, Petite Sirah can be a challenge to source. Yet, it has always been an objective to show case the varietal in a dynamic blend and a pursuit was launched to find some prized Petite Sirah vineyards. The realization of this goal came in 2009 with the first release of Machete. Spurred by a favorable reaction, we continued our hunt to include additional blocks in an effort to make the wine better. Prominent regions throughout Northern California comprise this matrix, which provides for added layers of depth and structure. In 2015 we were afforded ideal growing conditions which allowed for an exceptional harvest. Winemaker Notes: A nearly opaque color sets in the glass with hard, red complexion that is almost black. Aromas of ripe blueberries and candied plum mingle with toasted oak and charred vanilla. The entry is soft and inviting which paves the way for a lush mid-palate replete with layers of ripe boysenberry and cassis. The finish show cases ripe tannins and pronounced fruit which frames the two for nearly a minute. Critical Acclaim: Wine Spectator 94 points - "Generous and expressive, big and brawny, offering a mouthful of tannins but also brimming with flavors and aromas, including Earl Grey tea, dark chocolate, dried violet and toasted gingerbread. Rich notes of plum and black cherry are balanced by forest floor and earthy accents, lingering on the long finish. Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Robert Parker 96 Points "The 2015 Proprietary Red Blend Machete finished at 15.7% natural alcohol and is a blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache aged 10 months in 40% new French oak. This wine, at 15,500 cases, is telltale opaque bluish/purple with a super nose of barbecue meat and herbs, blackberries, blueberries, white flowers and sweet, dark raspberries in the background. The wine has fabulous texture, great intensity, full-bodied power (15.7%), and a long, long finish. It is a killer effort and like the Abstract, probably best drunk in its first 5-6 years of life because of its charm." • Bourgogne Chardonnay 2016
Bourgogne Chardonnay 2016 Grape Variety : Chardonnay Vineyard Site: Bourgogne white is made with the Chardonnay grape coming from the whole of Burgundy. It is often the entry level wine leading to the great white Burgundies: to drink it provides the simple pleasures of a classic Burgundy. History & tradition: Joseph Drouhin takes great care in selecting the various cuvées. Soil: clay and limestone. Viticulture Plantation density: 10,000 vine stocks/hectare. Pruning: Guyot. Yield: 61 hl/ha, purposely low in order to extract all possible nuances from the terroir. Vinification Supply: grapes and wine purchased from regular suppliers. Press: pneumatic press. "Débourbage": decanting of white wine to reduce sediment. Ageing Stainless-steel vats (7 to 8 months). One to two year old barrels for the wines of higher provenance. Throughout the ageing process, decisions are taken only after careful tasting evaluation. The data obtained is then completed through technical analysis. As with every other Joseph Drouhin wine, absolute priority is given to the true expression of terroir and character of the vintage. Tasting note by Véronique Boss-Drouhin "Fruity and full of life. This is a classical white Burgundy and a good entry level wine for Burgundy in general. The colour is golden yellow, with a greenish glint. The aromas are reminiscent of fresh grape and green almond. Elegant texture". Vintage This vintage produced wines of various styles, some with a rather high acidity level, others offering roundness. The main factor has been the frost. The vines hit by this severe spring frost very often matured later, giving fairly nervous wines, whereas the plots spared by frost reached a more precocious maturity.

Their friendship grew and advanced as their mutual interest in the knowledge of the cultivation and hybridization of orchids developed. Their mutual hobby began to grow in importance to them and the next logical step was to make it into a commercial venture. At the same time, Benevides had become Executive in Charge of Production for Mr. Burr’s very successful and long (8 years) running television series, “Ironside”. The two men purchased an island in Fiji where they raised coconuts and cattle and helped bring up the standard of living for the Fijian people who lived on the island. In 1976, Robert Benevides’ father, attracted by the beauty of the Dry Creek Valley and the special qualities of land with its productive soils, purchased portions of the existing Raymond Burr Vineyard Estate. Years later, Robert and Raymond planted vines on their lovely estate in 1986. Their first wines were made in 1990 under the direction of John Pedroncelli, who together with his brother, Jim, owned the Pedroncelli Winery off Canyon Road. The Raymond Burr label started in 1998. A reasonable price was set for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines, and over the years, prices for their Estate wines have remained the same as the original releases.

  • Many Readers Will Have Visited Sonoma County in Northern California Wine Country and Sampled the Zinfandels Made in the SubRegion Named Dry Creek Valley
Many readers will have visited Sonoma County in northern California wine country and sampled the Zinfandels made in the subregion named Dry Creek Valley. The 70+ wineries there are so small (median production is only about 4750 cases) that most sell all that they make at the “cellar door” (either in a tasting room or through Internet orders). Additionally, 150 grape growers sell fruit to these winemakers and another 80+ wineries besides. This direct sales link is vital to small wineries as it vastly reduces their costs of distribution. One result, is that there are many good wines that do not make their way onto retail shelves here, or do so only at a restricted set of outlets (basically the finer wine stores in town). To taste the gamut of Dry Creek wine making you really need to visit the area (and the ideal time is the weekend known as Passport To Dry Creek Valley each April). Notwithstanding that, sometimes the growers go out to their customers. This month, the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley brought several Dry Creek Valley winemakers to Dallas and I was fortunate to be a guest at their media event. Overall, the quality of their signature grape, Zinfandel, is higher than ever, with the overalcoholic overextracted sweet style of a decade ago replaced with wines that, while certainly bristling with power, also have complexity and the alcohol and sweetness in balance with each other and the other components. In a telling change from that ‘other’ style — these wines age. Examples from 2001 and 2004 exhibited resolved flavors and reassuring but approachable tannins that young Zinfandel usually lacks.

2016 Evolution Pinot Noir VINTAGE: 2016 APPELLATION: 100% Willamette Valley AVA GRAPE VARIETIES USED: 100% Pinot Noir ALCOHOL: 13.5% RESIDUAL SUGAR: 3.4 g/L LENGTH AND TYPE OF AGING: 100% stainless steel aged with oak staves DATE BOTTLED: March 2017 BOTTLE AGING PRIOR TO RELEASE: 9 months LIFESPAN IN A PROPER CELLAR: 5-7 years NUMBER OF CASES PRODUCED: 3,824 cases SUGGESTED RETAIL: $20 VINTAGE SUMMARY: Every growing season in the northern Willamette Valley is different and in our 45th growing year at Sokol Blosser we saw something very special: our earliest bloom on record. While we had bud break later in 2016 than we had in 2015, the warm weather in April and May progressed the vine growth enough to push up bloom. You can just about set your clock from the time of bloom to the first day of harvest…100 days. When we had bloom on May 20th (Mid-June is more typical for the start of bloom) we could see that August 28th would be the start of harvest. An August start date is not scary, it just is what mother nature gives you. We all took our summer vacations in July and were ready to go by mid-August so we could bring in some fruit for our sparkling wine programs on August 19th. It was not an especially dry year as we got our typical dump of rain during the winter of 15/16, and even had some wet weather during our early bloom in May/June which ended up destroying a lot of the clusters.

  • 65032 Tuality Salud Booklet 2020.Indd
WELCOME 2020 is a year of change. In every corner of the world, and in every area of our own lives, things are very different than they were one year ago. And with that change, there has been struggle. A struggle to find new ways of doing what must be done, a struggle to let go of what can no longer be, and for some, a struggle to survive. Between the moments of struggle, remarkable adaptation has taken root – growing despite challenge. Together, we have created, we have collaborated, and we have adapted. Still in progress, and evolving, but from challenge has risen a new recognition of the ways in which we are connected. So here we are – somewhat disconnected physically, but adapting together to create solutions for the evolving challenge of healthcare disparities in our community.
