  • 2013/2014 VINTAGES Dear Friend
2013/2014 VINTAGES Dear Friend, Fifteen years ago, my father purchased a small organic farm on the extreme Sonoma Coast and embarked on his journey to grow world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Upon Helen Turley’s declaration that this area was destined to be “the La Tâche of California”, he and David Abreu planted thirty acres with a diverse and thoughtful selection of clones and rootstocks. Set at high-density intervals, the vines burrow deeply and produce concentrated berries. Today, we are reaping the benefits of their vision and hard work, with mature vines that produce a vibrant spectrum of single vineyard fruit. The full expression of the site can be best enjoyed in our estate vineyard blends, the 2014 Wayfarer Vineyard Chardonnay and the 2014 Wayfarer Vineyard Pinot Noir. This vintage is open and generous right out of the bottle, possessing soft tannins, great acidity and a distinctive minerality. Each year we set aside small amounts of Pinot Noir from those clones which display exceptional character and balance, and bottle them as four stand-alone cuvees: “Mother Rock” shows a deep, earthy flintiness and velvety texture; “Golden Mean” is aromatic and bold with a bright acidity; “Paige’s Ridge” is rich and ripe, most true to a California-style; and “The Traveler” is ethereal and provocative, the most Burgundian in style. For the next five years, we recommend that you decant these wines for at least an hour before serving. Our sincere thanks for your eager support of Wayfarer. It’s been the realization of a decades-long dream and we are proud to share it with you.

  • 2013 HUNN Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley FINAL
2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY Release Date September, 2015 Production 568 Cases Appellation Napa Valley: Calistoga AVA, Rutherford AVA, Oakville AVA, Coombsville AVA & Howell Mountain AVA Varietal Composition 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot Winemaking Team Seana and Justin Hunnicutt Stephens, Proprietor Kirk P. Venge, Winemaker Cooperage Aged for 22 months in 100% French oak, 50% new Tasting Notes Our 2013 Napa Cab is a real beauty. Perfumed, almost feminine notes of strawberry and raspberry tart dance on the edge of the glass with darker cassis, black cherry and vanilla adding layers to the nose and hinting at the beast within. On the entry, volumes of supple bright cherry, plum and blueberry pie rush to the fore and linger well into the mid-palate. As the tannins begin to wash over and meld with the bright fruit notes, soft secondary flavors of milk chocolate and pie crust coat the palate and provide harmonious balance through the finish. This wine shows great promise and speaks well for 2013 as a year with great aging potential. While 2012 was a bombastic show stopper, 2013 will prove to be the nuanced genius plucking the right strings for years to come. Patience is a virtue, but then again, who needs virtue when great wine is waiting. Drink when you are ready, decant with vigor over the next 5 years and confidently enjoy to 2030. • Peter Michael's Quest How an Englishman Carved a Great Winery out of a California Mountain
Home > Magazine Archives > Nov. 15, 2014 Issue > Features Peter Michael's Quest How an Englishman carved a great winery out of a California mountain Tim Fish Issue: November 15, 2014 Knights Valley is not the sort of place an English gentleman simply stumbles upon. A secluded patch of Sonoma County, it is tucked among mountains and accessible by a tangle of country roads. There are no towns and only a few homes. It's a beautiful parcel of California, unruffled by time or development, a place more likely to be lost than found. But an Englishman on a quest somehow found his way there. Peter Michael traveled 6,000 miles, from London to Sonoma, on a mission that took him from extraordinary success in the high-tech world to a risky startup in the wine business. Now, after more than 30 years of hard work and investment, Michael, 76, can look back on a dream that is well and truly fulfilled. Peter Michael Winery has reached the pinnacle of California wine. With remarkable consistency, it excels with many different grapes and vineyards. View the entire table of contents Since 1997, eight of its wines have earned spots on Wine Spectator's Top 100 for the Nov. 15, 2014 issue lists, and three of those made the Top 10. See Also The winery's flagship is the Cabernet blend Les Pavots, from the home estate in Knights Valley. This powerful, balanced red routinely earns classic ratings The Vineyards of Peter Michael (95 points or higher on the Wine Spectator 100-point scale); as it ages, it Winery takes on texture and aromatics reminiscent of a fine Bordeaux.

Every Peter Michael wine label is stamped with the image of a California poppy as an Mountain vineyards, classical winemaking, affectionate tribute to the California state “ limited production flowers that covered the hillsides when Sir ” Peter first stood on this land. There’s beauty all around you here. Every time we come, the very first thing... we wind down the windows, get out of the car, smell those bay leaves and Douglas fir and think.... Wow, we’re back. Back home. - Paul Michael OVERVIEW ESTATE AND WINES Follow us PETER MICHAEL WINERY FAMILY In 1982, after a years-long search, British entrepreneur Peter Michael found this land – the perfect place to realize his dream of making wine in the classic European tradition, but under the California sun and in California soil. The following year he and his family planted the first vines in what would eventually become the renowned Les Pavots vineyard. An intensely personal endeavor, the Winery today is characterized by the multigenerational presence of the Michael family and their shared commitment to what they call 100 x 100: one-hundred percent family tenure for one-hundred years. The family sees this commitment as informing not only the day-to-day practices in the winery, but the caliber of wine that is the result. 01 05 Two generations of the Michael Family: Sir Peter and Lady Michael along with their son, Paul, and his wife, Emily. Chaix—two experienced vintners who planted hundreds of acres of vineyards and made a success selling the wine they produced. Because they also owned an Oakville operation (today the location of The Napa Wine Co.), they were among the most successful local wine businesses during the boom of the 1880s. Eventually the operation sold out to others and was closed during Prohibition.
