THE TEXAS SCHOOL BOOK DEPOSITORY BUILDING: PRESERVING THE DARK SIDE OF HISTORY by Richard West Sellars P JL rom a sixth floor corner window of the Texas School Book Depository Building in Dallas, the traf fic below seems surprisingly close—a slow-moving car makes an easy target. Lee Harvey Oswald had the same view as he crouched at this sixth floor window to watch the presidential motorcade approach on Hous ton Street and turn down Elm Street, passing through Dealey Plaza. Then he shot and killed President Kennedy. With the assassination on Novembet 22, 1963, ordinary urban features here on the west edge of downtown Dallas suddenly became infamous landmarks, known worldwide — the grassy knoll, the triple underpass, the School Book Depository. RESILIENT DALLAS RESILIENT DALLAS RESILIENT DALLAS RESILIENT DALLAS RESILIENT DALLASDALLAS’ PATH TO SHARED PROSPERITY About 100 Resilient Cities Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation, 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) is dedicated to helping cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, social, and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century. 100RC supports the adoption and incorporation of a view of resilience that includes not just the shocks—earthquakes, fires, floods, etc.—but also the stresses that weaken the fabric of a city on a day to day or cyclical basis. By addressing both the shocks and the stresses, a city becomes more able to respond to adverse events, and overall, is better able to deliver basic functions to all populations in good times and bad. The City of Dallas thanks The universities, nonprofits, and businesses, as well as the 100RC platform partners, whose contributions of research, science, and data were invaluable to the development and success of this Resilience Strategy. That work greatly expanded the capacity of City staff and was foundational to the analysis and recommendations put forward in this report. Ewing, B.S. Denton, Texas May, 1972 Ewing, George E., A Study of the Knowledge and Skills Required of Draftsmen in Descriptive Geometry, and What Is Offered in the Texas Junior Colleges. Master of Science in Industrial Arts, May, 1972, 102 pp., 14 tables, 2 illustrations, bibliography, 10 titles. This study was conducted to ascertain whether or not the opportunities for developing competencies in descriptive geometry needed by draftsmen in the Dallas -Fort Worth area are being provided in Texas junior colleges. Findings concerning the knowledge, skills, and equipment associated with descriptive geometry as it is presented in Texas junior colleges were compared w ith competencies in descrip- tive geometry that representatives of industry believe are important for successful draftsmen in companies in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The purpose of the study is to compile information which will be of use to school officials and teachers in developing courses of study that will enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for success in industry. Analysis of the replies received from instructors in Texas junior colleges revealed that the majority of Texas junior colleges offer a course in descriptive geometry, usually at the second-semester freshman level, in the drafting and design department or in the engineering department. -

COUNCIL CHAMBER 140381 February 26, 2014 WHEREAS, the City recognizes the importance of its role in local economic development initiatives and programs; and WHEREAS, the City has established Tax Increment Financing Reinvestment Zone Number Eleven, (Downtown Connection TIF District or District) and established a Board of Directors for the District to promote development or redevelopment in the Downtown Connection area pursuant to Ordinance No. 26020, authorized by the City Council on June 8, 2005, as authorized by the Tax Increment Financing Act, Chapter 311 of the Texas Tax Code, as amended; and WHEREAS, on August 29, 2005, City Council authorized the Project Plan and Reinvestment Zone Financing Plan for the Downtown Connection TIE District by Ordinance No. 26096; and WHEREAS, the Tax Increment Financing Act specifies that the governing body of a city shall submit an annual report on the financial status of the district to the Chief Executive Officer of each taxing unit that levies taxes on real property in a reinvestment zone, and a copy of the report shall be forwarded to the State Comptroller; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DALLAS: Section 1. That the FY 2013 Annual Report for Tax Increment Financing Reinvestment Zone Number Eleven, (Downtown Connection TIF District), City of Dallas, Texas, as of September 30, 2013, a copy of which is attached hereto (Exhibit A), is hereby accepted. Section 2.
