NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS Special Announcement from the Rector

My Dear Faithful and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Oratory and Holy Family Log Church in Cahokia,

Warmest greetings to you from our rectory in St. Louis.

The feast of St. Joseph only being yesterday, community members here in St. Louis prayed a rosary for an end to the current pandemic and finished the novena to St. Joseph for the Restoration of St. Francis de Sales Orato- ry with a sung litany to the Foster Father of Our Redeemer. Though the externals of this feast were modest in appearance this year, our inward fervor was not lacking. We will continue praying a rosary and the litany to St. Joseph daily as a community during the month of March for an end to the current scourge upon the Earth.

Though you may already be aware, please note that His Excellency, The Most Reverend Edward K. Braxton of the Belleville Diocese, as many of his other confreres has suspended all public Masses until further no- tice. Thus, the Institute will not be offering Sunday Mass at Holy Family Log Church until further notice. As stated in my first letter, public Masses at the Oratory are suspended until further notice as well, though the canons will continue to say the intentions that were originally scheduled for these days. Should you wish to move your intention, please contact the office as soon as possible.

We pray for the soonest end to the current troubles so that you may all come back and benefit from the Church’s Sacraments and spiritual treasures with renewed appreciation and devotion.

Until that time, we will be live streaming Holy Mass at 8:00am from our chapel starting tomorrow for the Feast of St. Benedict. The livestream will be accessible from the main web page of St. Francis de Sales Orato- ry (https://www.institute-christ-king.org/stlouis-home). Though this does not replace a real personal presence at the Holy Sacrifice, it can help us maintain regular devotion to the Mass. We are visual and tactile by na- ture, thus viewing such ceremonies will go a long way in supporting our continued devotion. Other live- streamed masses and devotions from the Oratory will be accessible from that same site as posted.

In addition to this, I encourage you to pray your daily rosary. Also, the church is open every day for prayer and devotions, so you are encouraged to come and do the Stations of the Cross in front of our beautifully craft- ed Stations. Though we may be tempted to rely exclusively upon our computer for all these spiritual aids, I urge you to pick up a spiritual book and benefit from the true silence that this situation has permitted to really savor their content and meditate upon them. Our Lord went into the desert for forty days, no portable phone in hand for his devotions and exercises. Why not imitate Him in this?

May Jesus Christ bless you all and keep you all strong in faith as we continue through this truly extraordinary Lent.

With Paternal Solicitude,

Canon Benjamin Coggeshall

Holy Water Fonts

With the heightened sensitivity related to the Coronavirus and doing our part to help stem its possible spread in the St. Louis area, Archbishop Carlson has mandated that all holy water fonts be emptied until further no- tice to help in this effort. At the Oratory, closed bottles will be available in the fonts from which the faith- ful may let fall a few drops upon their fingers to bless themselves upon entering the church should they choose. Holy water will still be available in the baptistry area for filling personal containers. Thank you very much.
