Though in practice rarely used, the Marguerite Frizzell Sanctus candle has always been included in the 7:00pm Holy Hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament rubrics of the Missal and remains a beautiful Saturday, March 27 symbol for the holiest portion of the Mass. The Feria of Passiontide (3rd class; Violet) use of the Sanctus candle mirrors the role of the Commemoration of St. John Damascene, Confessor & Doctor torchbearers at High Mass. For the universal calendar that to be found at the beginning of the Roman Breviary and Missal has been used. For the diocesan calendars no such straightforward procedure is possible. The decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites of 26th July 1960 at paragraph (6) required all diocesan calendars to conform with the new rubrics and be approved by that Congregation. The diocesan calendars in use on 1st January 1961 (the date set for the new rubrics to come into force) were substantially those previously in use but with varying adjustments and presumably as yet to re-approved. Indeed those calendars in use immediately prior to that date were by no means identical to those previously approved by the Congregation, since there had been various changes to the rubrics made by Pope Pius XII. Hence it is not a simple matter to ascertain in complete and exact detail the classifications and dates of all diocesan feasts as they were, or should have been, observed at 1st January 1961.

Detroit’s Two Pontifical Tridentine Masses Last Sunday’s dual Pontifical Masses in the Extraordinary Form were mentioned in a post on the New Liturgical Movement blog, referring to the “Two Assumptions” of metro Detroit. Bishop Alexander Sample celebrated a Pontifical Solemn Mass at Assumption Grotto, as part of last weekend’s Call to Holiness conference. Bishop Eugene LaRocque celebrated a Pontifical Mass and the Sacrament of Confirmation at Windsor’s Assumption Church. Over 500 faithful were in attendance, some traveling from as far as Ohio and Kitchener, Ontario. This year’s All Souls Day location will be Assumption Church in Windsor. On Friday, November 2 at 6:00 PM two Low Masses will be offered on the Side Altars of the church. At 7:00 PM a Solemn High Mass with Deacon and Subdeacon will be offered at the High Altar, followed by Solemn Absolution at the Catafalque. A plenary indulgence may be gained by those who visit a church on All Souls Day and pray an Our Father and Creed in the church.

    THE ORDER OF THE HOLY CROSS ORDO 2020 Holy Cross Monastery Edition West Park, NY The Ordo of the Order of the Holy Cross is the official calendar of feasts and fasts observed in our community along with their rank or degree of solemnity. This Ordo follows the calendar authorized by the Chapter of the Order in 2017. It may be used with The Monastic Breviary in either its 1976 or revised forms, with the service books published by the Camaldolese Benedictines, or with any other authorized form of the daily office. Observances listed as First Class feasts begin with First Vespers on the preceding evening and generally take precedence over all other observances. Second Class feasts do not have a First Vespers; their Vespers take precedence over the Saturday Vespers preceding an ordinary Sunday. Third Class feasts are observed with their own office, elements of which are taken either from the Proper or the Common of Saints in the service books used. Fourth Class feasts, also called Optional Commemorations, do not have their own office but may be commemorated at Matins [or Vigils and Lauds] and Vespers or observed at the Eucharist of the day or both. A table of such commemorations recently observed in our Order can be found at the end of this booklet. Local communities or households will need to determine if and how they wish to observe them. In this Ordo, First and Second Class feasts that are impeded are transferred to the next day of lesser rank. Local communities or households may choose to transfer them to some other available day in the week that follows their assigned date.

    Diocesan Calendar 2021 161 DIOCESAN CALENDAR FOR EAST ANGLIA 2021 “Christ’s saving work is celebrated in sacred memory by the Church on fixed days throughout the course of the year. Each week on the day called the Lord’s Day the Church commemorates the Lord’s resurrection. Once a year at Easter the Church honours the resurrection of the Lord and his blessed passion with the utmost solemnity. In fact, through the yearly cycle the Church unfolds the entire mystery of Christ and keeps the anniversaries of the saints.” (GNLY 1) Preliminary Notes n This Calendar is based on the GENERAL ROMAN CALENDAR, the NATIONAL CALEN­ DAR as contained in the Roman Missal (2010) and the revised DIOCESAN CALENDAR. n The titular and anniversary of dedication of each church are kept as Solemnities. Lest they be overlooked, it is advisable to mark them in this Calendar. n Local observances are permitted of Saints or Beati connected in some way with the locality, as through birth, ministry, death, or custody of major relics. The Bishop should be consulted in each instance. n On the ‘green’ ferias per annum (of the year) a wide choice of Mass formula is available: EITHER of any of the 34 Sundays per annum (with the prayers of the Sunday selected, or of another Sunday, or those provided ad diversa), OR of any Saint mentioned on that day in the Martyrology, OR of any votive Mass or Mass ad diversa, OR of any Mass for the dead (provided that the daily Mass formula is only used when the Mass is, in fact, applied for the dead).
