ISSUE: 2021 No. 24 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 5 March 2021 Thailand’s First Provincial Elections since the 2014 Military Coup: What Has Changed and Not Changed Punchada Sirivunnabood* Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, founder of the now-dissolved Future Forward Party, attends a press conference in Bangkok on January 21, 2021, after he was accused of contravening Thailand's strict royal defamation lese majeste laws. In December 2020, the Progressive Movement competed for the post of provincial administrative organisations (PAO) chairman in 42 provinces and ran more than 1,000 candidates for PAO councils in 52 of Thailand’s 76 provinces. Although Thanathorn was banned from politics for 10 years, he involved himself in the campaign through the Progressive Movement. ISSUE: 2020 No. 127 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE ANALYSE CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 6 November 2020 Youthquake Evokes the 1932 Revolution and Shakes Thailand’s Establishment Supalak Ganjanakhundee* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • Grievance and frustration resulting from the government’s authoritarian style, its restrictions on freedom of expression and the dissolution of the Future Forward Party have been accumulating among students and youths in Thailand since the 2014 military coup. • While high school and college students are overwhelmingly represented among participants in the ongoing protests, young people from various other sectors across the country have also joined the demonstrations. • The flash-mob style of demonstration is a venting of anger against the political system, expressed in calls for the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha, a new Constitution and, more importantly, reform of the Thai monarchy. • The protests are a flashback to the 1932 Revolution, in that they are conveying the message that ordinary people, not the traditional establishment, own the country and have the legitimate right to determine its future course. • In response, the crown and the royalists are using traditional methods of smears and labels to counteract the youths. * Supalak Ganjanakhundee was Visiting Fellow in the Thailand Studies Programme, ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute from 1 October 2019 to 30 June 2020. He is the former editor of The Nation (Bangkok). 1 ISSUE: 2020 No. 127 ISSN 2335-6677 INTRODUCTION A number of Thais have gathered annually at Thammasat University’s Tha Phrachan campus and at the 14 October 1973 Memorial site on nearby Ratchadamnoen Avenue to commemorate the student uprising on that date which restored democracy to the country.

  • 8.3.2 Feature of the Industrial Town
The Study on the Integrated Regional Development Plan for the Northeastern Border Region in the Kingdom of Thailand Sector Plan: Chapter 8 Industry 8.3.2 Feature of the Industrial Town Organization of I-san is divided by three regions by each Ministry and Agency, because of the supporting system of hierarchy. Roughly speaking, southwest center and gate city is Nakhon Ratchashima, southeast center is Ubon Ratchathani and Northwest center is Khon Kaen. Four provinces in northeast I-san are divided into two groups. Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan belong to Ubon Ratchathani of the Southeast and Sakon Nakhon and Kalasin belong to the Khon Kaen of Northwest center. Since the four provinces are far from the center city, they could not receive full support from the center. Even that Khon Kaen and Ubon Ratchathani are the centers of the regions, they themselves also require economic support. Eventually, four provinces should be developing themselves (see Figure 8.9). Figure 8.9 Functions of Four Provincial Towns But a careful consideration of this region indicates that I-san region should be divided into four sub-regions. Northeast region of four provinces should be joined together and establish a new regional community. Sakon Nakhon should be considered as the center because of the following reasons: · Sakon Nakhon is the biggest economic town among the four provinces; · It is the geographical center among the four provinces; 8-49 PLANET NESDB - JICA · It has a well-developed industrial infrastructure of airport and road network among the four provinces; and · Sakon Nakhon has a potential for Agro-Science City with agricultural activities of R&D institute and universities.

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School Department of Geography CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS ON CASSAVA PRODUCTION IN NORTHEASTERN THAILAND A Thesis in Geography by Ratchanok Sangpenchan 2009 Ratchanok Sangpenchan Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science August 2009 ii The thesis of Ratchanok Sangpenchan was reviewed and approved* by the following: Amy Glasmeier Professor of Geography Thesis Advisor William E. Easterling Professor of Geography Karl Zimmerer Head of the Department of Geography *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School iii ABSTRACT Analyses conducted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2007) suggest that some regions of Southeast Asia will begin to experience warmer temperatures due to elevated CO2 concentrations. Since the projected change is expected to affect the agricultural sector, especially in the tropical climate zones, it is important to examine possible changes in crop yields and their bio-physiological responses to future climate conditions in these areas. This study employed a climate impact assessment to evaluate potential cassava root crop production in marginal areas of Northeast Thailand, using climate change projected by the CSIRO-Mk3 model for 2009–2038. The EPIC (Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator) crop model was then used to simulate cassava yield according to four scenarios based on combinations of CO2 fertilization effects scenarios (current CO2 level and 1% per year increase) and agricultural practice scenarios (with current practices and assumed future practices). Future practices are the result of assumed advances in agronomic technology that are likely to occur irrespective of climate change. They are not prompted by climate change per se, but rather by the broader demand for higher production levels.
