Develop affordable green housing for local residents. (local people have a hard time affording land ‐ with ownership criteria ‐ deed/income) Clean, not polluted, sustainable environment with a diverse agricultural base. No air pollutants ‐ chemical sprays, processing plants, Keep good air quality. Hamakua is unique on the Island for having clean air Schools, excellent educational spectrum ‐ preschool, grad school, trade schools, tech schools, art, etc (with internet available to all) More trails, open space and coastal access. Currently access is through trespassing. Bike, walking paths. Quiet, safe and low lights ‐ we have enough lights Support services for parents so their children are socially adjusted (eg. ‐ children who rely on youth center for meals) Get kids involved in extra‐curricular activities. Increase awareness about these issues Bring high‐tech jobs in because we won't all be gentlemen farmers selling/trading goods. Provde employment for next generation so population doesn't relocate to Las Vegas for example.

Develop a vibrant art community (music, film, glass, crafts, dance, etc) Need money and support to attract people and get them to stay. Community supported space for studios with a network to get the art out there. Create an endowment that supports artists. Could be visiting artists that come for several years. Perhaps a change in tax code to support this. Affordable commodities ‐ Local merchants selling goods at reasonable prices yet high enough for them to make a living (What happened to dairy?) Fruit/food stands? Encourage local purchasing; make it attractive to buy local. With affordable shipping to and from the Islands. Food stamps where a percentage is only good for local food. Every yard has a garden (maybe chickens too) with people growing own food. Tougher laws on protecting local/native plants. No reason to bulldoze an entire lot down to the dirt. Enforce laws on land clearing for development. County needs to practice what they preach in terms of "green" and "sustainablility". Require County/community buildings to be ecologically sound, responsible energy use (open windows vs AC) Old federal building in Hilo is a perfect example of what to do. Electric cars and busses with free rides, routes throughout Islands ‐ Sustainabble, clean energy
