School in Ookala/Ninole area. Local schools controlled by local boards. Curriculum: educational agricultural sustainability. Competetive curriculum with rest of country. Education: environmental concerns, ocean/aina, natural history, civic responsibility, forestry, perspective of industry Not too different from now Opportunities to nuture traditional arts and culture and outlets to sell, perform, show and exchanges Little prosperous villages ‐ Laupahoehoe, Papaaloa, Ookala. More stores and restaurants within our proximity. Local grocery ‐ at least one in every town Village of time past with space for each cluster Be part of an active senior program. Senior living facility integrated with school, community (Marae concept) More community involvement More bikes and walking paths/Open Laupahoehoe Point Road Reliable and free bus system More self sufficiency ‐ Ag products produced and sold here Full productive gardens run by citizens to promote health Playgrounds Responsible ocean practices Some industry to keep our children near Expanded park at Laupahoehoe Park Ag zoning ‐ larger parcels available. Limits buy/sell on ebay, communication, grocery shopping delivery (which could save on gas) We are cut off from the world. Lack of it limits renting and other business opportunties. Cutting edge market place competition, new technolongy should be... Internet community bulletin boards to offer/advertise goods, services, babysitting, ag product distribution. Internet to access heath care Zoning issues: Like to see this coast remain ag. People pushing it with ag use. Limit/halt multi million and homes because increases value of land. Takes land out of ag. Prices farmers out. 4 Hāmākua CDP Vision Raw Data ('Talk Story' and Survey) Safe pedestrian bicycle paths or ways of traveling up/down coast. Preferably not near exhaust vehicles/highways (ie: not of the shoulder of the highway) Safe areas for children to play ‐ very few between Ninole and Hilo. Honokaa playground is old and falling apart. Address road issues: Roads not claimed by County are not maintained. Paper roads on maps but do not exist. These roads could serve ag ‐ good transportation/distribution. Keep police/fire services here (Laupahoehoe). Far from ambulance service. Would like easier access to ambulance. Land taken up by growing plywood, would like to see that land in agriculture to feed people locally. Profits from forest are leaving the community. Profit should stay here. Trees benefit very few people Develop this area as a breadbasket of the State (produce/ beef/pork/eggs/dairy and fish) Community cores with farmers markets geographically based. Flat, accessible, dedicated areas where farmers can sell goods (perhaps in places that are abandoned or places on County land). A good way to distribute food locally. No 1‐3 acre subdivisions. (No Puna‐Paradise Park) on Ag land. New developments should be near existing communities (such as the plantation camps) and be zoned residential Clean streams where you don't have to worry about your kids getting sick. Use stream water for edible plants, agriculture. Steam water made available to local households,
