The remains of a new species of cossonine weevil (Cossoninae: Dryotribini) are described and figured from Early Miocene (Burdigalian) amber from the Dominican Republic. Caulophilus ashei sp. n. is distinguished from other species in the genus. KEY WORDS: Polyphaga, Phytophaga, Tertiary, Curculionoidea, palaeontology, taxonomy. INTRODUCTION Weevils of the cossonine genus Caulophilus WOLLASTON are familiar members of the tribe Dryotribini. The common European species, Caulophilus oryzae (GYLLENHAL ) is widely known as the broadnose grain weevil and a frequent pest in agricultural systems. Adult females lay small, white eggs in soft or damaged grains (frequently damaged by the activity of other grain insects) which then hatch within a few days. The larvae feed on the softer portions of the grain before pupating and finally eclosing to an adult. Herein we provide the description of the first fossil Caulophilus , the first fossil of the tribe Dryotribini, and the first cossonine in Dominican amber. Today the genus Caulophilus consists of 17 described species distributed in South and North America, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Cuba, Hawaii, Seychelles, Madeira, and Europe, although some have become recently adventive in other regions (e.g., New Zealand). With the discovery of the species described herein the genus can now be documented from paleofauna of Hispaniola and is at least 19 million years old. -

Title: Karl Jordan: A Life in Systematics Abstract approved: Paul Lawrence Farber Karl Jordan (1861-1959) was an extraordinarily productive entomologist who influenced the development of systematics, entomology, and naturalists' theoretical framework as well as their practice. He has been a figure in existing accounts of the naturalist tradition between 1890 and 1940 that have defended the relative contribution of naturalists to the modem evolutionary synthesis. These accounts, while useful, have primarily examined the natural history of the period in view of how it led to developments in the 193 Os and 40s, removing pre-Synthesis naturalists like Jordan from their research programs, institutional contexts, and disciplinary homes, for the sake of synthesis narratives. This dissertation redresses this picture by examining a naturalist, who, although often cited as important in the synthesis, is more accurately viewed as a man working on the problems of an earlier period. This study examines the specific problems that concerned Jordan, as well as the dynamic institutional, international, theoretical and methodological context of entomology and natural history during his lifetime. It focuses upon how the context in which natural history has been done changed greatly during Jordan's life time, and discusses the role of these changes in both placing naturalists on the defensive among an array of new disciplines and attitudes in science, and providing them with new tools and justifications for doing natural history. One of the primary intents of this study is to demonstrate the many different motives and conditions through which naturalists came to and worked in natural history. -

ANDERSON CANADA Mike Morris (retired) September 1992, Poland CURCULIO EDITORIAL COMMENTS Yes, this number of CURCULIO is late. It should have been prepared and sent out in September of 1996, but our museum has been going through a move to new facilities and things have been in turmoil. We are now settled in and most services are up and running again. The collections, which were packed away for the move, are also now accessible again. Seems that things went quite well and in fact our Entomology section fared quite well as the move into our new facilities resulted in a great deal more space than we already had. We’re now getting the laboratories prepared and should be back to full speed in the near future. Our mailing address has not changed! On another note, congratulations are in order for Rolf Oberprieler who has accepted the weevil systematics position at CSIRO in Canberra, Australia. This will be a great new challenge for Rolf and one in which we can all be sure he will fare admirably. The Australian weevil fauna is exceptionally diverse and interesting and with the recent books by Elwood Zimmerman, a great base has been set for further and more detailed work on the fauna. I understand Rolf will be there sometime this summer. Now all he has to do is master ‘G’Day’ and ‘mate’ and he’ll have it made! Best wishes to Rolf and his family. -

ISSN 0013-8851 Abstract About 29,700 Oscinellinae were collected by means of sweep net, water traps and pitfalls in a variety of uncultivated habitats in Denmark mainly in Jutland. So far 75 species belonging to 21 genera are re corded from Denmark. Eleven species are new to the Danish fauna. Morphological details of Aphanotrigonum brachypterum, A. hungaricum, A. nigripes, Conioscinella gallarum, lncertella albipalpis, I. nigrifrons, I. kerteszi, I. scotica and Oscinella angustipennis are presented. The distribu tion of Oscinellinae in the Danish landscape is discussed. In Denmark, farmland dominates, so the two most abundant Oscinellarspecies of ara ble land, Oscinella frit and 0. vastator, are also predominant in most nat ural habitats. Small and larger uncultivated areas, however, making up only 25 % of the Danish landscape, contain a rich fauna of Oscinel lines. The advantage of different sampling methods combined is demonstrated. International Plant Protection Convention Surveillance: Working together to strengthen implementation Regional IPPC Workshops 2015 Surveillance: Working together to strengthen implementation The CPM agreed for an increased emphasis on surveillance in the next several years. This will take place through an Implementation Pilot Programme on Surveillance, which will be a coordinated effort with active participation from contracting parties and RPPOs. The Regional IPPC Workshops are an opportunity to share experiences with surveillance activities such as: current status, upcoming plans, and successes and challenges of surveillance activities within your country. In 2015, Member Countries answered a questionnaire on surveillance circulated by the IPPC Secretariat, and presented a summary on surveillance activities undertaken during the regional workshop. The data provided by Member Countries were extremely rich and useful to define activities to be set in the framework of the Implementation Pilot Programme on Surveillance. The content of the questionnaire for the regions in which an IPPC regional workshop was organized are provided below: Near East and North Africa, Pacific, Central Asia and Eastern Europe, Caribbean and Latin America (in Spanish). Surveillance: An official process which collects and records data on pest presence or absence by survey, monitoring or other procedures (ISPM 5) Question 1: What general surveillance activities take place in your country? (General surveillance is a process whereby information on particular pests which are of concern for an area is gathered from many sources, wherever it is available and provided for use by the NPPO – ISPM 6) 1. Effects of. Prescribed Fire and Fire Surrogates on Saproxylic Coleoptera in the Southern Appalachians of North Carolina 1 2 Joshua W. Campbell , James L. Hanula and Thomas A. Sci. 43(1): 57-75 (January 2008) Abstract We examined the effects of forest management practices (prescribed burning, me chanical, and prescribed burn plus mechanical) on saproxylic forest Coleoptera in the southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. During the 2-yr study, we captured 37,191 Coleoptera with baited multiple-funnel traps and pipe traps, comprising 20 families and 122 species that were used for our analysis. Saproxylic beetle numbers increased greatly from the first year to the second year on all treatments. Species richness and total abundance of Coleoptera were not significantly affected by the treatments, but several families (e.g., Elateridae, Cleridae, Trogositi dae, Scolytidae) were significantly more abundant on treated plots. Abundances of many spe cies, including various species of Scolytidae were significantly affected by the treatments. How ever, these scolytids (Hylastes salebrosus Eichoff, Ips grandicollis Eichoff, Xyloborinus saxeseni Ratzburg, Xyleborus sp., Xyleborus atratus Eichoff) did not respond in the same way to the treatments. Likewise, other Coleoptera such as Pityophagus sp. (Nitidulidae), Hylobius pales Herbst (Curculionidae), and Xylotrechus sagittatus Germar (Cerambycidae) also varied in their responses to the treatments. Species richness was not significantly different for the spring 2003 trapping seasons, but the fall 2003 sample had a higher number of species on mechanical shrub removal only and mechanical shrub removal plus prescribed burning plots compared with con trols. -

Oise amber has eight species, Baltic amber has 118 species, and Rovno amber has 16 species. Nine new genera and 18 new species are described from Baltic amber. Four new synonyms are noted: Palaeometrioxena Legalov, 2012, syn. nov. is synonymous with Archimetrioxena Voss, 1953; Paleopissodes weigangae Ulke, 1947, syn. nov. is synonymous with Electrotribus theryi Hustache, 1942; Electrotribus erectosquamata Rheinheimer, 2007, syn. nov. is synonymous with Succinostyphlus mroczkowskii Kuska, 1996; Protonaupactus Zherikhin, 1971, syn. nov. is synonymous with Paonaupactus Voss, 1953. Keys for Eocene amber Curculionoidea are given. There are the first records of Aedemonini and Camarotini, and genera Limalophus and Cenocephalus in Baltic amber. Introduction The Curculionoidea are one of the largest and most diverse groups of beetles, including more than 62,000 species [1] comprising 11 families [2,3]. They have a complex morphological structure [2–7], ecological confinement, and diverse trophic links [1], which makes them a convenient group for characterizing modern and fossil biocenoses. -

STATEWIDE COMPREHENSIVE OUTDOOR RECREATION PLAN 2015 Department of Land & Natural Resources ii Hawai‘i Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan 2015 Update PREFACE The Hawai‘i State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) 2015 Update is prepared in conformance with a basic requirement to qualify for continuous receipt of federal grants for outdoor recreation projects under the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Act, Public Law 88-758, as amended. Through this program, the State of Hawai‘i and its four counties have received more than $38 million in federal grants since inception of the program in 1964. The Department of Land and Natural Resources has the authority to represent and act for the State in dealing with the Secretary of the Interior for purposes of the LWCF Act of 1965, as amended, and has taken the lead in preparing this SCORP document with the participation of other state, federal, and county agencies, and members of the public. The SCORP represents a balanced program of acquiring, developing, conserving, using, and managing Hawai‘i’s recreation resources. This document employs Hawaiian words in lieu of English in those instances where the Hawaiian words are the predominant vernacular or when there is no English substitute. Upon a Hawaiian word’s first appearance in this plan, an explanation is provided. Every effort was made to correctly spell Hawaiian words and place names. As such, two diacritical marks, ‘okina (a glottal stop) and kahakō (macron) are used throughout this plan. The primary references for Hawaiian place names in this plan are the book Place Names of Hawai‘i (Pukui, 1974) and the Hawai‘i Board on Geographic Names (State of Hawai‘i Office of Planning, 2014). -
