British Occupation of Bengal: Plassey to Buxar (1757 - 1765) The first major battle of the British against Indian power was in Bengal:

Bengal witnessed a shift in power from the nawabs to the British from 1757 to 1765.

The three nawabs who failed to uphold the sovereignty of the nawabs were Siraj-ud-Daula, Mir Jafar and Mir Kasim.

The British controlled the Asian merchants after the Battle of Plessey in 1757.

Result of the war:

British achieved victory in Bengal

Declined Bengal trade

In 1757, Siraj-ud-Daula succeeded as Nawab of Bengal. The trade privileges and its misuse by officers and Company became the major reason for the conflict.

An imperial farman issued by Farrukhisiyar gave privilege to the Company in export and import. According to this farman, the Company had to pay ₹ 3000 a year to carry duty-free trade in Bengal.

Siraj-ud-Duala՚s attack on Calcutta led to open conflict. The British impose conspiracy cases against nawab. This gave British victory over Nawab in the battle of Plassey.

Result of the War Clive awarded Nawab ship to Mir Jafar (commander in chief of Nawab army) for his support.

The increasing demand of bribe made Mir Jafar collaborate with the Dutch Company.

1760, Mir Jafar was overthrown and appointed Mir Qasim.

Mir Qasim helped the British financially and militarily against the French.

However, Mir Qasim challenged British over the duty-free trade of the Company. He proposed for equal trade duties for British and Indian traders. This measure dispossessed British.

In June 1763, British under Major Adams defeated Mir Qasim. Mir Qasim fled to Patna and seek help for Emperor Shah Alam II and Shuja-ud-Daula (nawab of Awadh) .

Battle of Buxar War began when the chief of the Company՚s factory at Patna tried to seize the city. The army of Mir Qasim was defeated and sought help from Shah Alam II and Shuja-ud-Daula.

In 22nd October 1764, the allies of Mir Qasim advanced to Patna and battle was fought.

The British overran Awadh, forcing the Nawab of Awadh to fled to Rohila country. However, Shah Alam negotiated with the British.
