A4746 - Honnay - Vouchers VP10 #E.Vp Monday, February 16, 2004 2:06:26 PM Color Profile: Disabled Composite 150 Lpi at 45 Degrees Color profile: Disabled Composite 150 lpi at 45 degrees IUFRO Research Series IUFRO Research Series The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), with its 14,000 scientists from 700 member institutions in over 100 countries, is organized into nearly 300 research units that annually hold approximately 80 conferences, workshops and other meetings. The individual papers, pro- ceedings and other material arising from these units and meetings are often published but in a wide array of different journals and other publications. The object of the IUFRO Research Series is to offer a single, uniform outlet for high- quality publications arising from major IUFRO meetings and other products of IUFRO’s research units. The editing, publishing and dissemination experience of CABI Publishing and the huge spread of scientific endeavours of IUFRO combine here to make information widely available that is of value to policy makers, resource managers, peer scientists and educators. The Board of IUFRO forms the Editorial Advisory Board for the series and provides the monitoring and uniformity that such a high-quality series requires in addition to the editorial work of the conference organizers. While adding a new body of information to the plethora currently dealing with forestry and related resources, this series seeks to provide a single, uniform forum and style that all forest scientists will turn to first as an outlet for their conference material and other products, and that the users of information will also see as a reliable and reputable source. Although the official languages of IUFRO include English, French, German and Spanish, the majority of modern scientific papers are published in English. In this series, all books will be published in English as the main language, allowing papers occasionally to be in other languages. Mifsud** Abstract Four species of Colydiinae (Zopheridae) are recorded from Malta of which Langelandia niticosta sp.n. is described as new. Bitoma rufula MOTSCHULSKY, 1863 is transferred to Microprius FAIR MAIRE, 1868. Microprius linearis (WOLLASTON, 1867), Synchitodes rufa REITTER, 1877 and Synchitodes j;'ivaldszkyi REITTER, 1881 are synonymized with Microprius rufulus (MOTSCHULSKY, 1863). Microprius rufulus is recorded from Europe (Germany and Malta) for the first time. Key words: Insecta, Coleoptera, Zopheridae, Colydiinae, Langelandia, Microprius, new species, new com­ bination, new synonymies, taxonomy, first record, Europe (Germany, Malta). Zusammenfassung Vier Arten der Unterfamilie Colydiinae (Zopheridae) werden von Malta gemeldet. Langelandia niticosta sp.n. wird beschrieben. Bitoma rufula MOTSCHULSKY, 1863 wird in die Gattung Microprius FAIRMAIRE, 1868 gestellt. Microprius linearis (WOLLASTON, 1867), Synchitodes rufa REITTER, 1877 und Synchitodes frivaldszkyi REITTER, 1881 werden mit Microprius rufulus (MOTSCHULSKY, 1863) synonymisiert. Micro­ prius rufulus (MOTSCHULSKY, 1863) wird erstmals fUr Europa (Deutschland und Malta) gemeldet. Introduction The only comprehensive list of Coleoptera occuring in the Maltese Islands is that of CAMERON & CARUANA GATTO (1907). In this list two species were included under "Colydiidae", Bitoma crenata (FABRICIUS, 1775) [as Ditoma crenata (F.)] and Aglenus brunneus (GYLLENHAL, 1813). The latter appears to be closely related to prostominiines (Salpingidae: Prostominiinae and Agleninae) where it is currently included (LAWRENCE 1980; LAWRENCE & NEWTON 1995). For this reason, Aglenus brunneus will not be con­ sidered further in this work. The record of Bitoma crenata by CAMERON & CARUANA GATTO (1907) was especially noted as "ColI.

Diptera : Cyclorrhapha. Volumes II to X will be divided into parts of convenient size, but it is not possible to specifyin advance the taxonomic content of each part. Conciseness and cheapness are main objectives in this series, and each part is the work of a specialist, or of a group of specialists. Although much of the work is based on existing published keys, suitably adapted, much new and original matter is also included.

Fennica 18: 232–241. Three methods for extracting saproxylic beetles from wood samples were com- pared. The aim with the samples was to collect substrate-specific data on the bee- tle fauna in different types of small diameter wood. The methods were: (1) sifting – peeling bark from the wood, sifting it and extracting beetles in Tullgren funnels, (2) box-rearing – storing wood in dark wooden boxes and using light to attract emerging beetles; and (3) sack-rearing – hanging the wood in white cotton sacks with a collection vial at the bottom. Rearing sacks gave the species richest samp- les. Box-rearing gave similar results, but some small beetle species, especially Staphylinidae, were less frequent. Sifting was not useful for species occurring as larvae in the wood, but gave results similar to the two rearing methods for most species that occurred as adults, and was the most efficient method for the Staphylinidae. The two rearing methods were somewhat more labour intensive than sifting, but produced more beetles per sample. Sack-rearing was somewhat more efficient than box-rearing. M. Jonsell & J.
